40+ indoor activities For a Rainy Day

Play at an Indoor Playground

Indoor playgrounds are the popular group when it rains (or freezes) out. They offer a plethora of high-energy ways to help kids be active from giant tube slides to ball pits to climbing obstacles.

If you’re looking for a great curated list of area indoor play centres and trampoline parks in Halton or indoor play centers and trampoline parks in Hamilton and Niagara, you know we can help!

Indoor play centres for toddlers are ideal for little ones because they’re smaller and less busy through the week.

Visit The Library

I could write a novel about all of the ways I love our local libraries! No where else offers you so much FREE fun and family entertainment. From checking out a big pile of books to learning a new skill at a workshop, you will never be bored as long as you have your library card. Here are some of the highlights for your city’s library system:

Burlington Public Library – With 7 branches open daily, you are always welcome at BPL. Be sure to visit the newly renovated New Appleby branch for a modern and bright children’s area with hands on STEAM-based toys and an interactive display screen that turns your art into action! Central’s branch has DIscovery Centre where kids can get hands on with LEGO, robots, animation and construction materials!

Hamilton Public Library – HPL has 24 branches that you can bounce between to keep things fresh. No matter the day or time, you can always find something to do on their programming calendar. Or drop in and spend time playing in the children’s area, borrowing games and technology and studying in the teen section.

Oakville Public Library – OPL goes far beyond books when it comes to borrowing. You can take home technology like STEAM-based learning toys, laptops and tablets. Borrow sports equipment and learn to play lacrosse, pickleball and how to snowshoe! Plus their calendar is filled with creative and multicultural events and programs. 7 branches to visit, plus satellite locations and story walks around the town.

Milton Public Library – Visit the children’s area and the Teen’s area while you check out books, video games, or a laptop. Their events calendar is home to multicultural events for every age and interest. 3 branches to visit.

Niagara Falls Public Library – Borrow board games and puzzles, learn about Culture Boxes, and use their Cricut machine. Plus attend cool programs like LEGO robotics, crafternoons, EarlyON play dates, and a ton of ways to encourage your reluctant readers to pick up a new book. Watch for their Bookmobile to pop into your neighbourhood! 4 branches to visit.

Catch a Family Flick

Is there a better rainy day indoor activity than watching movies? I think not. Cineplex SilverCity Theatres have “Stars and Strollers” showtimes weekly. Guests and their kiddos watch a new release film with your little ones. With a little more light, lower sound, and $2 off the regular admission, it’s a great deal!

Visit CineStarz on Brant Street or Film.ca in Oakville for second run shows at a deeply discounted price. Don’t worry, the popcorn is just as delicious as the larger theaters! And don’t miss out on Oakville’s Movies for Mommies where the sound is lower, the lights are a little brighter, to make your movie-with-baby date all the more enjoyable.

We’ve collected some of the best family-friendly children’s museums and galleries in our region. Whether you want to know more about life in pioneer and early industrial times, famous sports personalities, appreciate works of art, dabble in hands-on experiments and science, planes, trains, automobiles and even secret passages, these family destinations will help you do just that.

Indoor Fun For Sports Fans

Looking for some high-energy competitive fun for the whole family? Maybe something quieter and suited to all ages? We got you! Our curated guides to rainy day activities Hamilton, Burlington, Niagara and Oakville will connect you with the best hands-on entertainment around!

Stores Worth Visiting: Toys Stores, Pet Stores and More!

Take a wander through some retailers who cater to kids and families. Shop at a local toy store from our list here.

Toy Stores – Every toy ever made seems to be at the toy store. Enjoy some time in every aisle checking out new toys and games, and adding to your child’s wish list. Just remember, you may not get out without making a purchase.

Pet Stores – Little animal lovers will enjoy walking through the aquarium section to check out the aquatic and bug life, and through the cat adoption centre, too. They may even get to pet or feed an animal friend!

Have a Sweet Treat – Whether you want ice cream, doughnuts or french fries, our lists of the best places to get each will help!

Malls – The stay at home parents’ quintessential rainy day activity, and for a good reason. Temperature controlled, ample coffee shops, and you can always find a sale and a friend to stroll with. Bring some loonies to Burlington Mall and the kids can ride the coin-operated rides. And both Oakville Place and the Milton Mall has been known to host kids events as well.

Visit IKEA – It’s Swedish For Fun!

I cannot tell you how excited my youngest was when she was finally tall enough for the Burlington IKEA’s Smōlland (that’s the name of their supervised kids area). Their kid’s centre is fabulous and free, but so is their kid’s department with all of the toys out on display. A great time to get some gift ideas! Plus, IKEA has great deals on kids meals, too!

Ontario EarlyON Centres

The Ontario EarlyON Centres (formerly known as Early Years Centres) saved my sanity in those early days/months/years of parenthood. I played with my new baby, met new parents who I still connect with today, and kept going until my kids were in school full time.

Whether it’s for a drop in play time or one of their organized pre-registered programs like Mother Goose, we are so fortunate to have the ROCK Ontario Early Years Centres. Click the link to find the centre closest to you.

Get Thrifty

Fancy yourself a DIYer? Love up-cycling? Or maybe you just like checking out trash-turned-treasures? Pop in and see if you can score an original Rubik’s Cube, Malibu Barbie, or some Muppet Show VHS tapes. Plus board games and books are a steal. Visit a local thrift store or charity shop and score a great deal. Your donations and purchases help our community.

Hop A Ride On Public Transit

Hop on the city bus and tour around Burlington, Oakville, Waterdown, or Milton. Transit is fast, reliable, and clean, and makes a great sightseeing bus. Plan your tour through Burlington , Milton, Oakville, or Hamilton. This was always one of our favourite rainy day activities in Burlington!

Upcoming Indoor Events From Our Calendar

Beyond these fantastic indoor destinations, there are always exciting events happening throughout Halton, Hamilton, and Niagara that make rainy days even more fun. From hands-on workshops and live performances to seasonal exhibits and special family-friendly activities, there’s something new to discover each week. Having fun with kids in tow doesn’t have to cost a lot with these free and cheap things to do in Hamilton.

Hamilton is such an excellent place to explore with kids. The best part is that you can have weeks of fun in the Steel Town without spending any (or much) money at all. Read on to find our best ideas for free and fun things to do in Hamilton with kids.

Chase Waterfalls in Hamilton

There are SO many beautiful waterfalls to see in Hamilton, 100 in fact! And most of them are extremely accessible even with little kids. Here are some of the ones we love the most. Read a little about each waterfall at the link above and plan a great outing. The Hamilton Tourism site has a great resource on local waterfalls.

Cost: Free, with some paid parking lots.

Play All Day At Bayfront park

Bayfront Park is located at the base of Harbourfront Drive near Hamilton’s downtown core. A beautiful scenic walk along the waterfront along the paved paths makes for a great stroller-friendly walk with friends and kids. In the warm weather, you can dip your toes into the lake, and in winter you can watch the local birds or enjoy the paved path. It is linked to Pier 4 Park, a great spot to play, by Macassa Bay Walkway. Address: 200 Harbour Front Dr, Hamilton, ON.

Cost: Free!

Walk, Run or Stroll Chedoke Radial Trail

We love this walk in any season. It’s packed gravel so easy to push a stroller along and easy to walk for our family of 4. The incline is enough that you notice it but not enough that it wipes you out. Plus, the views from the top are gorgeous, and the scenery on the way keeps the kids engaged and moving forward. Did I mention the waterfall?! We park at the Chedoke Golf Course (563 Aberdeen Ave).

Cost: Free!

Gage Park – Play In The Heart of Hamilton

This is a classic Hamilton park and popular destination for so many families, events and more.  A HUGE park with lots to see including outdoor gardens and beautiful water fountains. It also has a large parking lot and a huge walking path all along the outside of the park. Weaving through the park are gravel paths that my kids love biking on. The playground was recently renovated and includes some unique play pieces. Bring your swimsuit in the summer and kids will spend hours in the splash pad.

Cost: Free!

Don’t Miss The Gage Park Greenhouse

The Gage Park Greenhouse is open year-round and is a beautiful 14,000 square foot indoor spot to check out some pretty amazing tropical plants. Their variety will surprise you and your kids will see plants they’ve never seen before! It’s a free and tropical escape. Be sure to look in the pond for fish and turtles. Stroller-friendly.

Cost: Free!

Visit The First Tim Horton’s Store

DYK that Tim Horton’s opened their very first coffee shop on Ottawa St. in Hamilton? It’s been standing in the same place since May 17, 1964, and is home to some authentic Timmie’s artifacts and nostalgia. 65 Ottawa Street, Hamilton. Photo courtesy of Bruce Forsyth.

Cost: Free! But get a few Timbits while you’re here.

Eat Your Way Around The Hamilton Farmers Market

Your senses will be delighted when you wander the stalls at the Hamilton Farmer’s Market. Kids will love seeing real bakers, makers and farmers. Treat yourselves to some fresh cheese, locally-grown products and baked goods fresh from the oven. Photo courtesy of Hamilton Farmers Market. Located at 35 York Blvd, Hamilton, ON.

Cost: Free! But you’ll definitely find a treat or two.

Have You Seen The Rail Trail Rock Art?

If you didn’t already know, there is a guy along the Rail Trail by the Kennilworth stairs who started doing rock art to give us hope during COVID times. He has some pretty incredible pieces that he’s done. He only uses items he finds in nature and brings them to life. Your kids will definitely be inspired to make their own nature art when they get home.  Address: 20 Kimberly Dr, Hamilton, ON.

Cost: Free!

Ice Skate The Loop in Waterdown

The free ice skating loop at Waterdown Memorial Park makes ice skating so much more enjoyable. It is open all winter as long as the ice is frozen and is free to use. There’s a heated building with restrooms to warm up and change into your skates. Parking is great, too. Located at 200 Hamilton St N, Waterdown.

Cost: Free!

What parents love

Emerald Lake is a local favourite and our readers thought it was one of the best beaches near Hamilton! It has everything you could want for a day at the beach – and then some! This RV resort and water park is a popular destination for families because of its numerous amenities.

At Emerald Lake, you can enjoy the 5-acre spring-fed lake and the 5-acre spring-fed quarry. The quarry has a water park including a trampoline, a rock climbing wall, obstacle course, catapult, and more.

You’ll also have access to the 2′ deep kiddie pool, the 200′ water slide, their 3,400-square-foot rubber surfaced splash pad, beach volleyball courts and a basketball court. Additionally, there is a snack bar and life jacket rentals on site.

Families of all ages rank this as one of their favourite beaches near Hamilton.

Lakeside Park Beach in Port Dalhousie

Address: 1 Lakeport Rd, St. Catharines

Lakeside Park Beach, Port Dalhousie

What parents love

This has always been one of our favourite beaches near Burlington and Hamilton. The shallow Lake Ontario water is great for younger kids to play in. The sand was warm and perfect for castle building and beach volleyball.

They also have a snack bar in case you forget drinks/snacks.

But possibly the best feature is the working antique carousel at Lakeside Park Beach in Port Dalhousie. It’s over 100 years old and each ride is only 25 cents! This is a staple on the ActiveParents summer bucket list!

Tips for visiting

The beach itself is free to access, but you do need to pay for parking in the lot. Pay with an app or credit card.

Lots of shade and grassy areas for picnicking or playing ball.

Valens Conservation Area

Address: 1691 Regional 97 Rd, Cambridge

Valens Conservation Area Beach

What parents love

Valens is another one of the Hamilton beaches that has glowing reviews from seasoned visitors. Readers raved to us about the facilities and cleanliness. I love the swimming area at Valens. We go multiple times throughout the summer. The sandy beach is the best for building castles.

Spend the day, or camp overnight, rent a canoe and unwind with the family. I love that there is lots of shade, it’s just back a little from the waterfront.

Tips for visiting

No reservations are required. If the beach reaches capacity, Hamilton Conservation will close the parking lot and beach access. Watch their social pages for real-time capacity updates.

Turkey Point Provincial park

Address: 194 Turkey Point Rd, Turkey Point

Turkey Point Provincial Park Beach c/o Ontario Parks

What parents love

Not exactly one of the beaches near Burlington, but this one comes highly recommended so we added it. Turkey Point is an Ontario Provincial Park and it’s open May 1, 2026 to October 25, 2026.

It is a 2km wide beach boasting beautiful sand and ideal conditions for families. Worth the drive, we are told.

Tips for visiting

No lifeguards here. Life jackets are available to rent. The water is shallow, which makes it a family favourite.

Turkey Point is approx 90 minutes from Burlington/Hamilton.

Pricing

Purchase a Daily Vehicle Pass (similar to day access at Bronte Creek) for $21.00 and everyone in your car/van is covered. Both paid and free parking are available close to the beach.

Long Point Provincial Park

Address: 350 Erie Blvd, Port Rowan, ON

Long Point Provincial Park Beach
Long Point Provincial Park Beach

What parents love

Long Point is another Provincial Park that we highly recommend. I think it’s one of the best beaches near Burlington. Lots of families raved about it and we finally made it there last summer. The drive from Burlington was about 2 hours.

I took this photo above when we were there, and although it looks busy, there was a ton of space. We didn’t have anyone within 10 feet of us the whole time.

The beach is massive and clean, and the Lake Erie water was great.

Tips for your visit

The parking lot fills up quickly, and people come and go all day long. Street parking is also available in various locations.

We saw folks with mini BBQs and pop up shelters who were there for lunch and dinner.

Pricing

Purchase a Daily Vehicle Pass (similar to day access at Bronte Creek) for $21.00 and everyone in your car/van is covered. Both paid and free parking are available close to the beach.

Know Before You Go…

Wondering if the water is clean and clear? We like to use a few resources to check before we jump into any body of water. Use one, or try a few and make sure they’re all on the same page.

Dofasco Waterjet Plaza (aka Spencer Smith Park Splash Pad)

Located at 1340 Lakeshore Road

The Spencer Smith Park Splash Pad is possibly Burlington’s most famous spot in the summer. The picturesque location is frequented by locals and tourists from surrounding cities. The 30 waterjets spray intermittently and at different heights for kids to laugh and run through, while parents can sit on the perimeter in the sun or shade and watch their kids.

The Spencer Smith Park splash pad is free to use, although parking is sometimes tricky and can cost you depending on the time of day you visit. The playground is right beside when you need a change of pace. Washrooms and a snack bar are just inside the building adjacent to the pad.

Spencer Smith Park Splashpad, also known as Dofasco Waterjet Plaza

Kids of all ages will love the dumping bucket in the splash pad section.

Hidden Valley Park Splash Pad

Located at 1137 Hidden Valley Road.

This splash park in Burlington is one of our favourites. Visitors can easily spend the entire day enjoying the playground, the spray pad and the picnic space. Water jets shoot up from the pad that is surrounded by a park, greenspace, Hidden Valley Creek, and a covered gazebo perfect for a picnic. Plenty of other picnic tables around the park. The park is also home to the Burlington Model Railway Club. Ample parking and washrooms on site.

Lots of water jets and fun accessories in the splash park. The pool has diving boards and a rock wall that is excellent for your little daredevils. Bolus Garden Parkette Spray Pad

Brant Hills Park Splash Pad

Brant Hills Park, behind the Community Centre, 2255 Brant St

This is a new splash pad in the Brant Hills community area with above-ground water play features. There are a variety of seating options, including accessible metal tables with umbrellas and Adirondack chairs.

Water jets spray from the concrete pad and concrete wall. Nearby are the tennis courts, playground and sheltered pavilion. Picnic tables available and washrooms are close by. Lots of green space and parking.

Cherry Picking in Niagara and Hamilton Area

Cherry picking in Ontario’s Niagara Region is a popular summer activity, offering families a chance to enjoy the outdoors and pick fresh, delicious cherries. Here are some key details and tips for a successful cherry picking trip:

When to Go Cherry Picking

  • Season: Cherry picking season in Hamilton and Niagara Region typically runs from late June to early July. The exact timing can vary depending on the weather and growing conditions, so it’s always a good idea to check with local farms for the most accurate dates.

Types of Cherries

  • Sweet Cherries: These are the most common type found in the Niagara Region. They are usually available from late June to early July.
  • Sour (Tart) Cherries: These are typically available a bit later than sweet cherries, often in early to mid-July. Sour cherries are great for baking and preserves.

What to Bring

  • Containers: Many farms provide containers for picking, but it’s a good idea to bring your own sturdy containers or baskets, especially if you plan to pick a lot.
  • Sun Protection: The sun can be strong, so bring hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect yourself.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for walking and standing.
  • Water and Snacks: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated and snacks to keep everyone energized.
  • Bug Spray: Depending on the time of day and location, bugs can be an issue, so it’s wise to have some bug spray on hand.
  • Cash: Some farms may not accept credit or debit cards, so bring cash just in case.

Tips for Cherry Picking

  • Check Farm Policies: Each farm may have different rules and hours of operation, so check their websites or call ahead.
  • Arrive Early: The best cherries are often picked early in the day, so try to arrive early to get the best selection.
  • Pick Carefully: Handle cherries gently to avoid bruising them. Twist the cherries off the stems to avoid damaging the trees.
  • Sample Before Picking: Some farms allow you to taste a cherry or two before you start picking. This helps ensure you’re happy with the flavor and quality.
  • Storage: Cherries are best picked fresh and eaten soon after, but if you need to store them, keep them in a cool place and wash them just before eating.

Explore the immersive escape rooms across Hamilton, Burlington, and the Niagara. Whether it’s a family outing, a team-building exercise for colleagues, or a fun hangout with friends, these interactive adventures create lasting memories and provide a shared experience that encourages communication and cooperation.

What is an Escape Room?

Escape rooms are challenges where players solve puzzles and riddles to make their way through a themed plot and try to ‘escape’ within a set time limit. These games have themes that cater to every interest, offering cool challenges perfect for friends, families, or coworkers looking for great entertainment.

Players being their adventure locked in a room together. The rooms are often themed around mysteries, historical events, or science fiction settings. What is the objective? To solve the clues, decipher the codes, and piece together the puzzles cleverly hidden throughout the room.

With a time limit adding suspense, teamwork and quick thinking become essential to successfully completing the mission.

How Many People Do You Need?

The number of players you will need will vary based on the room you choose to complete, but these locations below offer games set up for 2 to 12 people. Normally 4 to 6 players is the magic number which allows for lots of brain power, without too many cooks in the kitchen.

What makes escape rooms such a fantastic activity is their ability to foster teamwork and problem-solving skills in an enjoyable setting. Participants must communicate effectively, pooling their diverse strengths and perspectives to conquer challenges. These rooms require critical thinking, encouraging players to approach problems creatively and work under pressure.

Moreover, escape rooms serve as an excellent group activity.

These kids indoor playgrounds allow parents to unwind or attend to tasks while their little ones burn off some energy during drop in play time.

Planning A Party?

I personally loved the birthday parties we hosted at indoor playgrounds because they were so simple. With just one call almost all of the work was done for me. Play places and trampoline parks almost always offer party packages that include a private birthday party room, set up, to food to clean up, and the entertainment play space is built in! Fresh snow is on the ground and I bet you’re asking yourself “Are there any tobogganing hills near me?”. There definitely are! This list will be very handy this winter anytime you are looking for a place to toboggan in Burlington, Hamilton and Oakville.

Tobogganing is one of the easiest and cheapest winter activities to keep kids entertained on a snowy day. Grab a sled and your snow pants and use our list to find a tobogganing hill in Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville to visit. We like to choose a new hill each time so we can compare and see which is the best!

These 11 toboggan hills are the city-approved sledding hills in Burlington and Hamilton because the city inspected these locations and determined them to be safest for sledding. Always watch the hills and make sure they’re clear to sled on.

Tobogganing is a Canadian winter pastime that almost makes our frigid winters bearable. While it may look like any hill will work, choose a tobogganing hill that is city-approved as you know it’s a safer alternative to other hills. Get bundled up, and bring your helmets, because you can never be too safe. Here are the designated hills to toboggan near Burlington and Hamilton:

Central Park is one of the tobogganing hills in Burlington

City-Approved Toboggan Hills in Burlington

  • LaSalle Park, east of the parking lot. There are 2 tobogganing hills at LaSalle. We like the wide and shorter one as the walk up is easier and the width means less trees to have to maneuver between.
  • Tyandaga Golf Course, at hole No. 4, on the west slope
  • Central Park, the hill northwest of Community Garden. This is a popular spot for us. I like that there is a long flat runoff at the bottom of the hill, with no obstructions. Lots of parking as well.
  • Brant Hills Park and Community Centre, southwest of the tennis courts.
  • Nelson Park, east side of the park, north of Centennial Bike Path
  • Lowville Park, the hill on the southwest end of the park. This hill is very tall and very fast. My young teens went and enjoyed it, but I would be extra cautious with younger ones on the hill.

Related: Make time to ice skate this winter. We know the best outdoor ice rinks for families to enjoy.

City-Approved Hills For Tobogganing in Hamilton

  • Garth and Stone Church Reservoir – 1515 Garth Street, Hamilton – Hill details: Northeast corner, Southern side (East of the parking lot)
  • King’s Forest Golf Course – 100 Greenhill Avenue, Hamilton – Hill details: Hole #9 – in front of the 9th green
  • Waterdown Memorial Park – 200 Hamilton Street, Waterdown – Hill details: Northeast corner, West of baseball diamond #3. This i s a popular sledding spot for all ages. Bring your ice skates and enjoy the skating rink loop, too.
  • Chedoke Golf Course Martin Course – 563 Aberdeen Avenue, Hamilton – Hill details: Martin Course, Hole #10- Tee
  • Dundas Driving Park – 71 Cross Street, Dundas – Hill details: Between the former Parkside Public School and the Dundas Driving Park. Another popular hill for families to enjoy.

The Town of Oakville website didn’t have info on toboggan hills, so it is better to assume that these locations are city-maintained. I’ve never been to any of these hills, so if you see something unsafe, I would love to know about it. And if you have a location to add/remove, give me a shout anytime. Safety first, always!

  • Bronte Creek Provincial Park – 1219 Burloak Drive, Oakville – Day admission required, but worth it because there is a ton to do (plus washrooms!)
  • Old Abbey Lane Park – 1110 Old Abbey Lane, Oakville – Details: there are 3 hills beside Abbey Lane Public School
  • Oxford Avenue & Upper Middle Road – Southeast corner of the intersection – this is a smaller hill that is great for little ones.
  • Appleby College – 540 Lakeshore Road West – apparently, kids have been sledding here for many years, have you been?

toboggan safely

Here are a few tips to play safely while tobogganing in Burlington and Hamilton.

  • Toboggan during daylight hours, not when it is dark.
  • Toboggan when the hill is snow-covered, not when it is icy or bare.
  • Check the hill and make sure it is free of obstacles and toboggan in the designated area.
  • Wear a helmet designed for winter sports.
  • Use a toboggan that is in good shape and has brakes and steering.
  • Avoid wearing scarves or any clothing that could get caught in a toboggan and cause injury.
  • Always sit down and face-forward on a toboggan.
  • Do not build jumps or other obstacles on the toboggan hill.
  • Walk up the side of the hill and leave the middle open for others coming down the hill.
  • If you fall off of your toboggan, move out of the way to avoid being hit.

Reminder: Visiting these sledding hills is an activity that you do at your own risk. The city, nor Active Parents, is not responsible for any personal injury or damage to your personal items.

Raise your hand if fall activities are your favourite! The mild, sunny days are the best for being outside for long periods of time. The flavours and aromas (hello apple and cinnamon!) are a delight and there are sooo many things to do with kids near Hamilton, Halton and Niagara. We’ve been making this list and adding a few new faves to it each year. What is your favourite way to celebrate my favourite season?

Cross these fall activities off your fall must-do list

  1. Hike up Mount Nemo to see the breathtaking fall colours of the Niagara Escarpment.

2. Challenge yourself with Canada’s Largest Corn Maze! Hanes Corn Maze is over 20 acres! And we have a list of all the local mazes right here.

Hanes Corn Maze

3. Geocaching is like searching for a treasure, right in your own neighbourhood. This is one of our favourite fall activities because it’s free and you can do it anytime, anywhere.

4. Nelson Park is home to some rugged bike trails called The Dirt Jumps that my 10-year-old loves!

Nelson Park

5. Pick Your Own Pumpkins. Kids love seeing the expanse of a pumpkin field and watching them choose the “perfect” one is adorable.

pick your own pumpkin patches and farms

6. Paint kindness rocks for your friends and neighbours. Gather smooth rocks, paint them, and secretly leave them on their doorstep or in their gardens as decoration and a reminder that you care.

7. Take the family to a local apple orchard near Hamilton and Burlington and bring home some fresh-picked apples and pears! It’s an essential fall activity for families.

8. Work in your rubber boots with a creek walk. Nothing soothes those wild kids like the adventure and discovery of a new ecosystem!

9. Send a postcard around the world! This week we received one from Japan and sent one to Germany!

10. Visit the Animals at a local farm or sanctuary.

11. Visit one new park a day until the snow comes.

Family-Friendly Fall Fun

12. Make something apple-y. These apple spice muffins are super simple and pack in lunches perfectly. Or give homemade apple sauce a try. I used Splenda for my father-in-law when I made this recipe and it was delish. You may never buy the store-bought stuff again!

13. Carve a pumpkin! You can get one at one of these local pumpkin patches, or hit the grocery store. Most kids will love the icky mush inside and the freedom to create their own unique faces and expressions. Or decorate a pumpkin because then you don’t have to touch the gooey bits inside!

14. Play one of our favourite family board games. We have our recommendations here.

15. Watch the salmon swim and spawn in Bronte Creek. You can see them both at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, Hidden Valley Park, or Lowville Park in Burlington.

16. Meet the Raptors and other Birds of Prey at Mountsberg Conservation Area. Peregrine falcons, Gryfalcons, Golden and Bald eagles, hawks, owls and more are on display for your view. My favourite is Jazz the barn owl! Reservations for Conservation Halton properties are not required, but you can save money on the gate fees by booking ahead.

17. Have you tried apple cider doughnuts? This was my first taste of the highly recommended Bennett’s and they didn’t disappoint!

18. Take a long, detailed look at the captivating Bruegel-Bosch Bus at the Hamilton Art Gallery. The Gallery Level 2 (where this exhibit is located) is free admission all the time.

Fresh Air, Gentle Hikes and Farmers Markets

19. Make some tailgate chilli! This recipe has over 7000 glowing reviews and looks so warm and hearty. Bonus points if you serve it in a bread bowl!

20. Paint some seasonal pottery pieces like we did. We have a great list of the area’s pottery studios. While you’re there, you can make some great fall decor pieces or plan for some early handmade holiday gifts.

21. Visit the farmers market. Not only will you get the freshest produce and homemade goodies, but your kids can also meet the folks who grow their food and see where their food really comes from.

22. Have you ever seen a “Karst”? It’s a natural crater and you can explore them up close and in person when you take a walk through Eramosa Karst. It’s one of our all-time fave family hikes as voted by the kids!

Eramosa Karst Hamilton

Cider, Conservation Areas, and More

23. Sip some hot apple cider. All of the orchards on our list sell their own, or you can pick some up at the grocery store or farmers market. Add a cinnamon stick and voila – you’re fancy!

24. Christie Lake covers 60 hectares and is the perfect spot for a paddle! The area is also equipped with a boat launch. Bring your own or borrow a friend’s and spend the day floating and taking in the fall foliage.

25. Watch the lift bridge. It raises and lowers on schedule for the massive ships touring around Lake Ontario, and as needed for the tall sailboats. Very relaxing, and kind of a feat of massive, steel awesomeness.

26. Roast marshmallows. It’s the ideal season for this tried and true fall activity, and you don’t even need a campfire. We make them in the toaster oven at home! The perfect treat for a family movie or game night.

27. Explore the longhouse village at Crawford Lake and learn about local First Nations history. Watch the turtles paddling in the meromictic lake. Enjoy a day hike from Crawford Lake through the Nassagaweya Canyon Trail, and journey to Rattlesnake Point. Don’t forget to book ahead to save money on the gate fees.

Fall Activities For Kids Can Be Free and Cheap

28. Take a flashlight walk around the neighbourhood. Even though the lights are low, kids will be extra excited to see what they can see with their flashlights! It’s also a great time to deliver some of those kindness rocks you painted…

29. Book a visit to Joseph Brant Museum‘s current exhibits. “The Burlington Gallery” explores topics that tell distinct yet interweaving stories, exploring Burlington’s rich history and heritage, or “The Costume Gallery” will take us back in history to Burlington’s heyday and when people travelled miles to see their favourite musical entertainers at the Brant Inn.

30. Blankets + chairs + outside = stargazing. Kids love the special feeling they get from being outdoors at night with their grownups. This is one of the fall activities where time together is the goal, stars are just the bonus.

31. Halloween Movies are here! These are the 55 best kids’ Halloween movies, and these

32. Pinecone crafts are hitting their peak on Pinterest! They are a great free craft supply and seeing the ways kids use them is so inspiring!

33. Brantford Twin Valley Zoo is one of our favourite places to visit. The size of the zoo is perfect for kids of all ages.

More Easy and Fun Things To Do With Kids in the Fall

34. Book your tickets to Safari Niagara’s Boo at the Zoo, a spooktacular Halloween animal celebration on October 4th-5th and October 10th-12th.

35. Visit Kelso Conservation Area. You can hike their beautiful trails, bike them, or even ride the chairlift to the top for the best view in town!

36. Doesn’t everyone make multiple trips to their local pop-up Halloween stores and purchase nothing?! We love the scary displays and the spooky atmosphere and can spend hours scaring ourselves and each other.

37. Visit the gnomes and fairies on Gnome Road at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. It’s a little hidden village that will pique your little one’s curiosity!

38. Experience a guided tour of Dundurn Castle. This 40-room Italianate-style villa was built in the 1830s on Burlington Heights; the former site of a fortified military encampment established by the British in 1813.

39. Grab the rakes and watch how much fun you and your kids can have with a slide and a pile of leaves!

fall activities - bronte creek provincial park gnome trail

Pumpkins, Disc Golf, Popcorn and More Fall Essentials

40. Popcorn balls are such a fun and easy way to celebrate movie nights, birthdays, or you know – Tuesday?! We love these s’mores popcorn balls from I Heart Eating.

41. Playing a round of Disc Golf at Bronte Creek is a great combination of fresh air, nature and some good old-fashioned sports. It’s not as easy as you think it is!

42. Mini golf before the mini greens are closed for the season!

43. Pumpkin spiced anything! Skip the latte and try some other pumpkin-spiced treats this fall. Bars, muffins, pies, and cupcakes! They make great desserts and gifts for friends.

44. A reader told us about Josling Farms this week and it sounds like an awesome experience for families. Josling Farms offers pick-your-own potatoes, tomatoes cauliflower and more! Give your kids a small taste of what farm life is like as they pick their own produce.

45. Visit Bronte Creek – and all of the Ontario Provincial Parks – to fill your passport with Parks stickers. Each park has its own crest available as patches and stickers.

46. Go ziplining at Chicopee Tube Park! I swear I was scared out of my wits, but I was sooooo thrilled I did it! My kids and husband loved it so much that they did multiple trips down.

47. Hilton Falls is the perfect mix of an easy hike and a gorgeous waterfall. It’s one of the lesser-visited conservation areas, but definitely one of our favourites! Read about our visit here.

What Laser Tag Exactly?

Laser tag is a high energy indoor game that combines strategy, teamwork, and adrenaline-pumping action. Players gear up with vests and handheld laser devices, both provided by the location you visit. Players then make their way into a dimly lit, maze-like arena looking for the opposing team members.

The primary goal? Tag opponents with laser beams while dodging incoming fire to rack up points and claim victory. It’s a thrilling experience that is fit for various ages, making it a popular choice for birthday parties or just a fun indoor activity.

Laser Quest was a very popular destination for anyone interested in playing some laser tag in Mississauga/Oakville. Sadly, with the varying restrictions and closures, Laser Quest closed all of their facilities in September 2020.

Read More: keep the excitment going when you go head to head at one of these cool video game arcades.

How Old Must Players Be?

Participation isn’t restricted by age. Your kids and adult will enjoy themselves in the excitement of laser tag. One things to keep in mind is that the laser blasters and vests can be heavy for younger kids. My girls were small, and the Planet Laser tag equipment was a little on the heavy side for them at 8 years old. I always suggest parents visit a laser tag centre before you commit to an event so you can test out the weight of the equipment.

Whether you’re a group of friends, a family looking for an awesome outing, or someone planning a fun team-building activity, lasertag offers an experience everyone can enjoy. Players strategize, communicate, and make their way through the maze-like battlegrounds, relying on teamwork and quick decision-making.

Each of these laser tag arenas make great destinations for a family outing or a birthday party or give a gift card for the ultimate experience gift.

Laser Tag Birthday Party For kids?

Birthday parties these arenas are a hit for numerous reasons. They offer a super cool game play setting where your birthday kid and their friends can enjoy friendly competition. The immersive nature of the game ensures everyone gets involved, creating lasting memories.

Tag venues often provide party packages, including private gaming sessions, reserved party areas for cake and celebrations, and sometimes even additional perks like arcade games or special effects lighting. I’ve held my kids parties at Planet Laser in Oakville and Splitsville laser tag in Burlington and recommend them both. We had a great time and so did our guests.

Indoor laser tag centers provide a controlled environment for gameplay, which makes them very popular locations to host birthday parties in the winter and rainy spring months. We’ve been to arenas that have cool themes and obstacles to use to your advantage, adding an extra layer of thrill to the gaming experience. The dimly lit settings with glow in the dark black lights and maze-like layout create an immersive and exciting feel for players.

Arcades are exciting places where kids can immerse themselves in a world of fun and games. These spots are filled with rows of colourful machines that light up and buzz with excitement. Think of an arcade as a playground for video games!

But what exactly is an arcade? Well, it’s a place packed with various types of games that range from classic pinball machines to the latest cutting-edge video game consoles. Picture yourself surrounded by a variety of games that challenge your skills, test your reflexes, and most importantly, provide heaps of entertainment.

Arcades make a great destination for a team outing or a birthday party. Venues often offer great food and drink options, and cater to large groups regularly.

Playing video games can be a great way for kids to have fun, develop hand-eye coordination, and even learn problem-solving skills. Moderation is key, though! Just like enjoying a tasty treat, playing video games in moderation can be a good thing. It’s important to balance gaming with other activities, like outdoor play, reading, or spending time with friends and family.

Whether it’s competing in virtual races, embarking on epic adventures, or simply enjoying classic arcade games, these kid-friendly spots ensure a world of excitement and entertainment. Get ready to press start and dive into a world of gaming fun at these amazing arcades and gaming venues specially crafted for young gamers and fun loving parents!

We’ve also included some very cool eateries and arcade bars who offer video games at your table or in the restaurant. Here is one of our favourites.

What To Expect When You Visit

  • Every arcade in Ontario is completely unique. They will each have a different quantity and line up of games to choose from. If you;re looking for a specific game, call ahead and see if they have that one.
  • Some arcades still run on quarters (sorry, no more penny arcades!) and some run with credit card-like payments where you load an amount of money on the card and use the card to pay for game play. Video games are often priced as “credits”, so it takes 2 credits to play a game, etc.
  • Time of day will generally determine how busy the arcade will be. Kids should be ready to wait in line to play the newest and most popular games.
