Summer is almost here and we have a great idea for keeping kids moving and having fun! Kids Bowl Free is back for 2025, and we know the lanes who want to see YOU.

Select bowling alleys across Canada and the US offer free bowling for kids during the summer. Register on the website (linked below) to receive coupons for 2 games of bowling every day, all summer long. Read below about where and how to take advantage of the program in Halton and Niagara Regions, as well as Kitchener Waterloo.

Sadly, there are no alleys in Burlington or Oakville taking part in 2025.

Kids ages 2 years to 15 years old are invited to register for their free games of bowling. Each alley has different start and end dates, so make note of that.

Ads are how we pay our bills and keep our blog free for you to enjoy. We also use affiliate links; if you make a purchase through them, we may receive a small commission at no cost to you.

How Does “Kids Bowl Free” Work?

Summer Entertainment doesn’t have to break the bank! For over 15 years now, bowling centers around the globe have provided 2 FREE Games of bowling each day to kids during the Spring and Summer. This program is designed by bowling centers to give back to the community and provide a safe, secure, and fun way for kids to spend time this summer. So, are you wondering how do you get in on the fun? Here’s how:

Step 1: Scroll down and find your local bowling centre.

Step 2: Register your kids. Eligible kids will receive 2 free games each day during the dates provided by the bowling alley. Participating bowling centers set their age limits, see the center registration page for more details.

Step 3: Go Bowling All Spring & Summer!

Once you register your kids, you’ll receive coupons every week for free bowling at your chosen bowling centre. You simply show them to the alley when you arrive and kids will enjoy 2 free bowling games that day. Shoe rental is not included, it’s an extra cost.

What About The Adults? Can They Also Bowl Free?

Kids Bowl Free loves grown-ups, too! That’s why they created the Family Pass. Family Passes for other family members and adults to bowl are available at an additional cost AFTER you register for kids bowling free. They provide 2 games of bowling daily per person and can only be purchased through the KBF program, not at the bowling alley. You pay just a single payment and you can get 2 Games free all summer long for up to 4 adults during your centres KBF hours.

Looking for some spur-of-the-moment Mother’s Day ideas? Our events calendar is open 24/7.

Things To Do On Mother’s Day

Indoor Places To Take Mom for Mother’s Day

May weather can be unpredictable so play it safe and plan an indoor activity with Mom. Here are some suggestions from the moms in our community.

Visit Gage Park Greenhouse – The tropical greenhouse in Gage Park is like a mini-vacation and, therefore it must be an ideal destination for moms who love gardening, plants and flowers. In addition to the hundreds of plants and flowers, look for the koi fish and turtles swimming about. Entry is free, and donations are appreciated. A top-rated spot to visit on Mother’s Day in Hamilton. Read about our visit to the greenhouse.

The Art Gallery of Hamilton is one of our fave spots to visit with all 3 generations of our family. School-age kids will love the exhibits on the 2nd floor and there will be lots of discussion about that cool VW Bus! As a result, the multiple floors of art and installations will keep your eyes entertained all Mother’s Day in Hamilton! Read about our latest visit to the AGH.

Royal Botanical Gardens – RBG is home to beautiful indoor gardens that will convince you you’re on vacation. You can visit the Rock Garden or their other beautifully maintained grounds. RBG is a long-time favourite of our “Gramma” and I think yours will love visiting on Mother’s Day. Read about our latest visit to the RBG.

The Art Gallery of Burlington is home to various exhibits in an assortment of mediums, however, it’s very family-friendly, too. Make sure to see the space dedicated to impromptu creativity, complete with book nooks for reading. The gallery is wheel-friendly and spacious. There is a small greenhouse with a relaxing water feature. Large windows make the gallery bright and airy. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated. ABG website.

More Indoor Things To Do on Mother’s Day

Take Mom To The Movies at a local, indie movie theatre like The Westdale in Hamilton, Film.ca in Oakville, Landmark Cinema in Jacksons Square, the 100-year-old Playhouse Cinema, or at CineStarz in Downtown Burlington. Many have special screenings as part of their Mother’s Day events. In addition to a smaller, more intimate theatre size, you also enjoy lower ticket prices, but the concessions and quaintness are big big big!

Get Creative – Got an artsy mama? Take them to paint some pottery at a local paint-your-own-pottery studio. It’s a great activity for families, and she’ll get a mini-masterpiece to remember the special day by. Find a local PYOP studio here.

Outdoor Places Moms Love Visiting

Royal Botanical Gardens is home to some of the most stunning gardens and green spaces in southern Ontario and how lucky are we to live nearby! If the weather plays in your favour, take Mom and the whole family to walk through the grounds and see the magnolia trees in bloom and the beginnings of the cherry blossoms! Bring your camera and pre-book your parking because this destination is popular.

Spencer Smith Park is a popular destination in Burlington. Stroll the paved, wheel-friendly waterfront trail all the way to the lift bridge, check out the cherry blossom trail and enjoy the playground if you’ve got little kids with you. You’ll find great lunch and dinner options, for instance, Mother’s Day brunch at Spencer’s at the Waterfront, and lots of coffee and dessert shops, too! Parking is free on weekends and there’s lots of it in the parking complex at Lakeshore and Locust Street. Find shops and restaurant details here.

Play Some Mini Golf – Mini Putt is a perfect sport because it requires very little talent and causes lots of laughs! Some of the best local courses are open for the season, find them here.

Nature Walk and Talk – Take your favourite mom on a walk, stroll or hike in Hamilton or Burlington. We have a list of family-friendly spots to walk to help you choose the trail that suits your group the best. Click here and grab your shoes!

The University of Guelph Arboretum makes for a lovely stroll and a peaceful way to spend time outdoors. Kids will love the natural playground, and gravel paths make it easy for walking. Above all, be sure to enjoy the Japanese Garden and the native trees.

Mom will love the beauty and tranquility of the RBG Rock Garden

Visit A Local Garden Centre

Mom will love anything you give her, but why not take her to the garden centre and enjoy a few hours in a plant lover’s paradise? I had no idea this was one of the most popular Mother’s Day events and outings! We asked our friends with green thumbs which garden centres are worth a visit, and here’s what they recommended:

  • Burlington’s Centro Market is home to a garden centre and farmers market, and the market opens for the season on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2024.
  • Holland Park in Dundas is a popular spot to find plants, flowers, and fresh-made arrangements.
  • Visit Harper’s Garden Centre in Ancaster. Their website boasts 15,000 unique items to choose from!
  • Winona Gardens is a local favourite and a 3rd generation family-owned garden centre.
  • Terra has greenhouses in Milton, Burlington, Hamilton and Waterdown and is a trusted garden centre for many.

These Top-Rated Restaurants Are Perfect For A Mother’s Day Brunch

We check with local foodies, tourism and of course, Moms, to find their favourite brunch spots for Mother’s Day and any day worth celebrating. These delightful spots will surely book up quickly for Mother’s Day, so as soon as you find one you like, call and make a reso. Above all, enjoy yourselves.

Best Brunch In Oakville:

  • The Crepe Kitchen offers you over 40 types of savoury and sweet crepes served all day long.
  • Community Resto is a vegan staple in Oakville, but even for meat eaters like me, it was a delicious treat for the tastebuds. Waffles, pancakes, breakfast burritos and more.
  • Harpers Landing has never disappointed me! Their brunch menu boasts every delicacy you can imagine from eggs benny to huevos rancheros and cheesecake stuffed french toast (heaven!)

Burlington’s Best Brunches

  • Pur & Simple is a frequent stop for my “ladies who brunch” group because we’ve never had a bad brunch here. There is something for every dietary need and their food is made fresh and served hot. I recommend their artisan French toast and their skillet breakfasts. And of course, a mimosa to celebrate!
  • Spencer’s at the Waterfront is famous for their weekend brunch and it’s plain to see why. Between their beautiful decor, the stunning lake views and their menu offering multiple types of eggs Benedict, the timeless steak and eggs and even a chocolate cake waffle!
  • Russell Williams speaks my breakfast language! One of the longest-operating restaurants in Burlington offers large portions of homestyle cooking to write home about!

Best Brunch In Hamilton:

  • Ancaster Mill serves a 5-star brunch every weekend. Treat yourself (and mom) to this fine-dining destination, housed in an old stone flour mill overlooking a waterfall.
  • Shy’s Place was mentioned numerous times to us by our community. Shy’s Place is located in a historic Dundas home-turned-restaurant. They also have an outdoor, year-round patio.
  • Motel Restaurant is your choice if you love an Insta-worthy restaurant with food to match the beauty of the decor. Decadent breakfast items are taken to the next level plus some naughty name cocktails to sip.
  • Electric Diner is definitely a place after my own heart with its eclectic 80’s decor and home cooking-style menu of classics, with a kick.
Enjoy a hot, homestyle breakfast skillet at Pur & Simple

The Greenhouse is located inside the grounds of Gage Park and playground and creates a warm, tropical oasis right in the heart of The Steel City. The Gage Park Greenhouse is one of our favourite free things to do in Hamilton because the kids and adults alike love visiting.

CLOSURE NOTICE
The Tropical Greenhouse will be closed to the public from March 31 to April 21, 2025.

The greenhouse is 14,000 square feet and is home to subtropical plants, dozens of palms, and unique species like the corpse flower. It is named that because its scent is similar to that of a rotting corpse (no thank you!). You can see photos and videos of the Gage Park corpse flower here.

What You’ll See At The Gage Park Greenhouse

Expect to spend about 30 minutes to 1 hour here, depending on how much your kids like plants! Be sure to direct their attention to the ponds. Why? Because that is where they’ll catch a glimpse of turtles and fish! The turtles are our absolute favourite part of the greenhouse. You can catch them swimming or catching some sun on one of the rocks. The large and small fish love to make their way from one end of the pond to the other. The pond is large and spans almost the entire length of the greenhouse. Keep your ears perked up for the sounds of a waterfall, too!

If you like tropical climates in the city, you’ll also love the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory.

As you step inside, you are greeted by an explosion of vivid hues and fragrant scents. The designs, ranging from traditional to contemporary, highlight the versatility and artistry of these beloved flowers. Each exhibit tells a unique story, capturing the imagination and inspiring awe.

The Hamilton Greenhouse celebrates the beauty of nature while promoting horticultural excellence and fostering a sense of community. It provides a perfect opportunity to appreciate the wonders of autumn and indulge in the peaceful oasis created by the greenhouse. Visitors can explore the exhibits, learn about different chrysanthemum varieties, and gain inspiration for their own gardens.

Triple C Farm is one of our most recommended farms in Hamilton to visit. If you’ve got little kids who love visiting petting zoos, or adults who love a great cause, Triple C Farm is the place to be.

Welcome to Triple C Farm in Ancaster

I’ve yet to meet a family who hasn’t enjoyed their visit to Triple C Farm. The staff – a family of 5 who run the show – are kind and compassionate. Parents, Trisha and Pascal, along with their three sons purchased the farm in 2013. All three boys are autistic, and the family knew this farm would be a great location for the boys to learn the skills needed to become productive adults.

Triple C Farm is now a fully-functioning animal sanctuary. They also run volunteer programs for adults with developmental disabilities.

Visiting Triple C Farm

Pre-booking your visit online is a requirement for visiting the Ancaster farm, they are not currently taking drop-ins. Visitors’ numbers are kept small to allow for a peaceful visit.

You can pre-book your visit online using the link at the bottom of this article. Your visit will be 1 hour and the cost is $15 to book your spot, plus $5 per person cash when you arrive. All of the money from admission fees goes to supporting the nutritional and medical needs of the rescued animals.

Come dressed to get a little messy – this is a fully-functioning farm after all! Pants may get muddy and footwear will come in contact with everything you’d find in an animal pen. I always wear rubber boots and jeans that I can easily wash. The farm has a wash station and sanitizer to use.

What To See And Do At Triple C Farm in Ancaster

If you’re looking for a great petting zoo near you, you are in luck – sort of. Triple C is more than a petting zoo, they are an animal sanctuary. Almost all of their animals are approachable and friendly, and Tricia or Pascal will let you know who needs their space on the day you visit.

You will have full access to the goat/alpaca/etc. enclosure, plus you can roam the farm and meet a cornucopia of other farm friends like pigs, horses, goats, cows and sheep. Plus, some more unique animals like alpacas, ducks, bunnies and more.

All throughout the year, Triple C Farm welcomes many new furry family members including rabbits, pigs, donkeys, goats and horses! Many of the animals are available for “adoption” meaning you get to be the animal’s owner as they live at the farm. You can visit, feed, and more. Every adoption helps keep the farm animals healthy and fed and helps offset the price of any veterinary care they need.

One of the reasons I love Triple C is that visitors don’t feed the animal, so the animals aren’t clamouring to get at you. You’re welcomed into their space and able to walk around and enjoy their company. You can pet them and even hold some of the furry residents. The volunteers there will show you the correct way to hold a baby goat if you visit in the springtime.

Be sure to take some time at the end to feed the chickens and ducks with the farm-provided feed. They are a few of the animals on the farm you can feed, and boy is it fun!

Events and Experiences at Triple C

Add Goat Yoga and Goat Movie Nights to your bucket list because you can do both here at this Hamilton farm. Triple C Farm events and so much fun. Their events calendar is always full of fun ways to be at the farm.

One of the most popular farm offers is the mobile farm experience. Bring gentle petting zoo animals to your school, daycare, home or seniors home and watch faces light up!

Admission to Triple C

Visits are by appointment only – walk-ins will not be accepted. Booking Fee:

  • To secure your booking, a $15 (taxes included) non-refundable booking fee is required.
  • Additionally, we ask for a $5 per person contribution to the farm upon arrival. This contribution goes towards feeding the animals, their vet bills, etc. Payment can be made by debit, credit, or cash.

Visit Triple C Farm at 500 Carluke Road West in Ancaster, Ontario. Their website is triplecfarm.ca

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the museum is home to a vast collection of aircraft and artifacts that showcase Canada’s rich aviation history.

Hamilton is home to plenty of great things to do with kids.

Welcome To The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

The museum was founded in 1972 by a group of aviation enthusiasts who wanted to preserve Canada’s aviation heritage. Today, it is one of the largest and most comprehensive aviation museums in Canada. This Hamilton museum’s collection includes over 40 aircraft, ranging from vintage biplanes to modern jet fighters.

Bomber crew exhibit at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum
I learned so much about these guys all thanks to my amazing tour guide!

What Kind Of Planes Are At The Warplane Heritage Museum?

One of the highlights of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s collection is the Avro Lancaster, a World War II-era heavy bomber that played a crucial role in the war effort. The museum’s Lancaster, known as the “Mynarski Memorial Lancaster” in honour of a Canadian airman who received the Victoria Cross for his actions aboard a Lancaster, is one of only two airworthy Lancasters in the world.

Other notable aircraft in the museum’s collection include the CF-100 Canuck, Canada’s first jet fighter, and the first fighter aircraft to be designed and built in large quantities in Canada. This plane can fly as fast as 550 miles per hour!

Also check out the CF-104 Starfighter, a supersonic jet fighter used by the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Cold War, and the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver, a versatile bush plane that played a key role in Canada’s remote northern regions.

My favourite planes are the Consolidated PBY-5A Canso because of its harrowing story and sentimental touch, and the Avro Lancaster which you’ve possibly seen flying around the skies on occasion. I love the heroic history of the Lancaster. In total 7,377 Lancasters rolled off the production lines in Britain and Canada, during WW II. Today, 17 Lancasters survive around the world, but only two are in flying condition. Aren’t we lucky to have one so close by?

More Things To Check Out at The Warplane Museum in Hamilton

In addition to its impressive collection of aircraft, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum also houses a variety of exhibits and displays that provide insight into Canada’s aviation history. The museum’s displays cover a wide range of topics, from the early days of flight in Canada to the role Canadian aircraft played in the war and modern history.

One of the most popular exhibits at the museum is the “RCAF Women’s Division”. This exhibit tells the story of the women who served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. The exhibit features uniforms, equipment, and personal stories of the women who served in a variety of roles, including as pilots, navigators, and radio operators.

I spent a long time checking out the Art For Victory exhibit. It highlights the various ways propaganda posters were used to boost recruitment and keep spirits up during the war. I bet you didn’t know that graphic designers and printing companies served such a big role in the war effort.

Visitors to the museum can also take part in a variety of hands-on experiences, such as sitting in the cockpit of a fighter jet or trying their hand at flying a simulator.

Overall, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is an excellent destination for anyone interested in aviation or Canadian history. The museum’s impressive collection of aircraft and exhibits, combined with its interactive experiences, make it a must-visit for anyone near the Hamilton area.

Isn’t she a beaut? This is the Avro Lancaster.

5 Must-Dos When You Visit

1. Accept a Tour Guide – Normally I like to do my own thing, but the amount of experience and knowledge Phillip – my tour guide – shared with me was beyond anything I could have imagined. Guides are very willing to tell you all they know and answer your questions. I wandered around with Phillip for 2.5 hours and loved every minute.

2. Look and Listen – Watch the videos and listen to the recordings. You’ll be transported back in time and feel emersed in your experience.

3. Priase The Women of Aviation! Ladies, we did a LOT more than we know, and a lot more than we get credit for. Female pilots flew all over the world and piloted so many massive aircraft. We generally had a smaller frame, which is perfect for piloting those early planes. Thanks, Phillip for letting me know all about women’s role in the war and aviation.

4. Climb Aboard – Many of the aircraft at the Canadian Warplane Museum have open cockpits and visitors are allowed (and encouraged) to sit in them. Make sure you have a staff member with you and listen to a guide as they tell you all about the buttons and dials. Can you tell how much I loved my guided tour?!

5. Visit The Gift Shop – I know that sounds like a commercial, but they have the coolest t-shirts, mugs and posters for aviation fans. Looking for models? Books? Puzzles? You will find some very unique gift items here.

I have over 100 photos from my visit to the Warplane Museum.

One More Tip…

And last but not least, go slow as you tour through the Hamilton Warplane Museum. There is so much to see and learn, don’t rush your way through. And come back often! Especially in spring and summer when you can see the planes take off and land.

Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum – located at the Hamilton International Airport, 9280 Airport Rd, Mount Hope, ON L0R 1W0.

Challenge your whole family to a cool ropes course like the one at Treetop Trekking in Hamilton.

The Art Gallery of Hamilton – or AGH for short – is one of the city’s best places to visit for families. Yes, kids will enjoy the art gallery, you have my word on it! Plus, we have the scoop on how you can enjoy free admission! Read on to find out.

The Art Gallery of Hamilton – Fun For Kids

The Art Gallery of Hamilton is 75,000 square feet and home to over 10,000 pieces in its collection. It’s way bigger than I imagined. Some pieces come and stay for a short period. These are called exhibitions. But many of the works call the art gallery home permanently and are referred to as collections. The second floor is home to a mixture of exhibitions and collections.

On our most recent visit, at the end of September, we spent the afternoon wandering the outdoor gallery grounds and checking out all of the works in the garden. Then we made our way inside to see our favourite gallery, Level 2. Here’s a scoop on what we saw.

Read More: Find more things to do in Hamilton right here.

Addison loved every single exhibit on Level 2!

The first collection we saw when we got off the elevator was titled Tom Thompson: The Art of Authentication. After checking out those works, we walked into the Level 2 Gallery and saw the temporary residency installation from Sylvia Nickerson. My layman’s description is “posed human figures made out of shredded, colourful paper”. It was so eye-catching and great to be able to look at it up close. There were large pieces right on the open floor that you could walk around and really observe. I just wanted to reach out and touch them (but don’t do that!).

My 11-year-old really liked the comic book-esque works and spent a lot of time checking them out in detail. Kids notice such unusual things! Some pieces included packing bits, tin foil, plastic and other repurposed items. They were busy and eye-catching and gave us so many things to point out. If I had a nickel for every time I said “Look at that!” I’d be rich.

We Came To See The Bus

Our main reason for visiting was to see something I’ve wanted to see for so long. The Bruegel-Bosch Bus by Kim Adams. It definitely didn’t disappoint! In fact, I’ve got plans to take the rest of the family back to check it out. The bus is a permanent installation at the AGH, so don’t worry that you might miss it. It’s a wild creation that connects an awesome Volks Wagon Bus and thousands of toys and action figures. It’s truly like nothing you’ve ever seen before. I cannot recommend a visit to see it enough.

When we visited, the roof had a small leak that was being repaired, so we couldn’t walk all around the Bus but normally you can see it from every angle. We recommend spending lots of time looking at every nook and cranny.

Can you see the skeletons, Austin powers figurines, train tracks, hockey players…and more?!

After we spent so long in that section, we wandered the rest of the second floor. They had a section filled with massive works by Indigenous artists and (again) we fell in love. Make sure to check it out when you visit the AGH. The colours are stunning.

My little masterpiece and her favourite work of art

Walk a little more and you’ll find more rooms with even more cool things to see. This miniature city scene had the tiniest details and was another of my daughter’s favourites. This room was filled with contemporary art, which was an excellent and engaging introduction for my 11-year-old. There were great discussions about the art itself, how it was made and why the artist and the design (why that colour? texture?)

The Art Gallery of Hamilton shares these tips for families when they visit:

  • The AGH is baby-friendly. Bring your stroller or front baby carrier. They have elevators.
  • Breastfeed in their many seating areas, or for more privacy try their Playroom space
  • Washrooms have change tables
  • Keep your visit short if you need to, match your child’s pace and come back multiple times
  • Ask kids lots of questions to focus their investigation, and encourage them to share their ideas. Let your child lead to ensure you see things that interest and engage them. Play games like “I Spy” or “Tell Me What Happens Next.”

Visiting the AGH – For Free!

The very best part of our visit to Gallery Level 2 and the Jean and Ross Fischer Gallery is that they are always FREE ADMISSION courtesy of RBC Incite Foundation for the Arts and Orlick Industries. And admission to the AGH in its entirety is free on Thursdays right now.

Address: Art Gallery of Hamilton – 123 King Street West in Hamilton. You can visit the AGH website here.

In 2025, Ontario has planned four Free Fishing weekends. These are times when you can fish without a licence. They are a great reason to get out with the kids and try your hand at angling.

Free Fishing Weekends 2025 – Free Fishing in Ontario

Normally, in Ontario, you need to possess a fishing licence to fish recreationally. However, four times a year the government allows for licence-free fishing, and these weekends make the ideal time to get out in nature and enjoy a day lakeside.

Free Fishing Weekend in Ontario will allow for licence-free fishing for Canadian residents on the following days:

  • Family Fishing Weekend in February (February 15-17, 2025)
  • Mother’s Day Weekend in May (May 10-11, 2025)
  • Father’s Day Weekend in June (June 14-15, 2025)
  • Family Fishing Week in July (June 28–July 6, 2025)

If you’re not a regular fisher or a fishing licence holder, make sure you take advantage of these weekends. They are a great and fun way to spend time with family and friends while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors!

How To Borrow Fishing Equipment

Since 1998, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has sponsored a program called TackleShare to loan our fishing equipment for free. This program removes the financial barrier that would keep families from enjoying this relaxing sport.

Borrow rods, reels and even tackle is as simple as checking out a book from the library. TackleShare has hundreds of loaner sites in Ontario. They also partner with Ontario Parks to help bring fishing to more families. Just one more way to enjoy a free fishing weekend in Ontario! You can find a list of the loaner sites here.

Let’s banish those winter blues! Here are more than 50 things to do in winter in Hamilton and Halton area, including Milton, Oakville, Burlington, Waterdown, Hamilton, Stoney Creek and beyond. We love keeping this list on hand for those days when you need a little extra motivation to head out into the coldworld. This list of winter thing to do should inspire you to revisit a family favourite winter adventure, try something new and have fun!

Explore Nature

  • Hike at one of our favourite kid-approved hiking spots. We’ve got stroller-friendly hikes here, so bring the littlest explorers with you.
  • Wander near the water. Lake Ontario’s waterfront is easily accessible, smooth-paved in most areas, and always free to explore.
  • Keep an eye on the wildlife all winter in Burlington’s Cherry Hill Gate. Bring your binoculars and observe the birds, squirrels and other animals in the waterways. They’re active no matter the time of year!
  • Visit Bronte Creek Provincial park and explore the working Victorian-era farmhouse and see some of their farm animals. If the temperatures are mild, they may be out in their pens! (spring and summer)
  • Take a trip to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory. It’s a tropical oasis that kids will love.
  • Triple C Farm is one of our favourite places to visit – even in the winter! Their farm takes in animals in need and is home to goats, sheep, horses, donkeys, alpacas, llamas, pigs and more!
  • It’s always a warm, spring day at the Gage Park Greenhouse. Bonus – it’s free to visit all year long!

Soak Up The Christmas Spirit

Add a Memorable Family Experience To Your Calendar

  • Hop aboard one of these epic train rides and enjoy the ride, the sights and the experience.
  • Save your pennies and skip the major leagues! We absolutely love OHL hockey games. They’re family-friendly and full of action for a fraction of the price of a Leafs game. Check out the home games for the Brantford Bull Dogs (who have moved from Hamilton to this arena in Brantford) and the Niagara Ice Dogs here.
  • TreeTop Trekking in Hamilton has their Tree Walk Village open over the winter break.
  • Families who love a challenge will love the skills needed to beat an Escape Room. We have a ton of them to choose from, and each location has different themes, rooms and skill levels required.
  • When was the last time you beat your kids at bowling? Sounds like they could use a rematch and we know the coolest lanes to visit.

All aboard for a seasonal train ride.

Run, Jump, Climb and Play!

  • Play Indoors no matter the weather. Here’s our massive list of indoor things to do nearby.
  • You can read our coverage of local play centres here and see which ones are going to be added to your “must-visit list”.
  • Tweens and Teens will love climbing at The Hub Climbing in Mississauga.
  • Indoor play centres are always an option to escape the winter temperatures while also keeping the kids active and moving. Here are the lists of indoor play centres in Halton and this list is for Hamilton and Niagara.
  • My teens love an afternoon at the arcade. And I love when I can beat them at retro video games and air hockey!
  • Bowling is one of our favourite things to do with the kids because we never know who will score the lowest haha! But the best part is that you don’t need to win to have a great time.

Easy Outdoor Activities For Winter Fun

  • Have you read our recap of our trip to London, Ontario? You need to add a visit to your winter season itinerary!
  • Staycation-ing is my jam, and we loved our local stay trip in Burlington.

Free and Cheap Ideas

  • Look into Postcrossing. We’ve been talking about it non-stop since we discovered it. You get an address for someone who would love to receive a postcard and send them one. You, in turn, get one sent to you. We’ve sent and received cards from Japan, England, Lithuania and Africa!
  • The same goes with Letters From Afar. Kids will love following Isabelle on her world adventures through beautiful letters, maps and stamps. We’ve been subscribers for years and these letters are truly something you can save and read with your grandkids!
  • Get science-y with these easy and quick at-home experiments you can do with simple items from your cupboards. Kids will love it and they’ll leave a little something, too!

The CP Holiday Train is an annual tradition that travels Canada and the northern United States during the holiday season. This festive train, adorned with thousands of colourful lights and decorations, travels through communities, spreading cheer and collecting donations for local food banks. Spectators can expect a dazzling display of holiday-themed decorations, live musical performances by popular artists American Authors and KT Tunstall, and an atmosphere filled with joy.

One of the core elements of the CP Holiday Train is its commitment to supporting communities in need. During each stop, the train encourages attendees to bring non-perishable food items or make monetary donations to help stock local food banks. The holiday train serves as a catalyst for a charitable food drive, aiming to alleviate hunger and support families during the holiday season. The collective contributions of attendees, combined with CP’s matching donations, significantly impact these community food banks and support those who require assistance.

Families and individuals attending the CP Holiday Train experience not only the joy of the season but also the fulfillment of giving back to their communities. The combination of entertainment, charitable giving, and the spirit of togetherness makes the CP Holiday Train a heartwarming and memorable tradition for all involved. The 2024 entertainers you can expect to see are American Authors and KT Tunstall.

Tips for the Canadian Pacific CP Holiday Train

#1 – Don’t forget your food bank donation! The goal of the CP Holiday Train is to collect donations for food banks. I’m thrilled to report that since 1999, over $21 million and 5 million pounds of food have been collected across North America.

#2 – Make sure you arrive early. Parking is usually a bit of a walk from the main event area, and you don’t want to miss the train pulling in!

#3 – The Train is fun whatever the weather, but it always seems to rain either just before we go or on the day of. Warm jackets are a must, but don’t forget those rain boots!

#4 – Take something to sit on/in. We learned early on to take some chairs for us oldies, but also our wagon or chairs for the littles. See #3 – the ground is usually wet, so blankets don’t always work.

#5 – Snacks/games/glowsticks! With the train coming in after dark the kids don’t get to run around a lot, but will still need entertainment while you wait! The dollar store is a great source of light-up toys and games and bonus you’ll see your kids as they roam around!

Welcome to our list of local board game cafes in Burlington, Hamilton, Niagara and beyond! Board game cafes have been popping up all over the world, and in your city, and it’s easy to see why. They offer a unique and fun indoor experience for people of all ages and backgrounds.

In this blog, we’ll explore what board game cafes are, why they’re becoming so popular, and what you can expect when you visit one. We’ll also give you some insider knowledge on the cafes we’ve been to and share some of our favourite board games to play while you’re there. So sit back, relax, and grab the dice, because it’s your turn!

If you’ve ever caught yourself asking “Is there a board game cafe near me?” then keep this list handy for some serious fun in the near future.

What is a Board Game Cafe?

A board game café is a spot much like. coffee shop or dessert bar where you can play board and card games. Most cafes also served food and drinks. Visitors generally pay a fee (per person or per table) and have access to a huge assortment of board games. The staff are super fans and often recommend games and help you with gameplay and instructions. Many board game cafés also sell the games.

Why are Board Game Cafes So Popular?

Playing board games have always been something fun to do with family and friends, but it can get pricey if you want to play a new game every few weeks. That’s where game cafes shine. For a small fee, you have access to a library of games, all to play and put back if they don’t tickle your fancy. For just a couple of dollars per person, you can try all of the popular and pricey games to make sure you love them. What a fun way to eliminate buyer’s remorse!

Well-stocked locations, like Ludology Boardgame Cafe in St. Catharines is only $5 to stay and play for a few hours, making it very popular.

Game Cafes We’ve Been To

In our travels, we have visited 2 board game cafes in Hamilton and 1 in Toronto. We love this low-key rainy-day idea that doesn’t cost much. You can get an entire afternoon of fun for your whole family, with drinks and snacks, for less than $50.

Never Board Games Lounge in Hamilton was out most recent visit to a cafe. With over 900 games to choose from, we tried so many and founds some new faves that we added to our Christmas list. Food drinks and alcohol are available on site. You can also play game in their 2 themed private rooms to really get that immersive feeling.

Mancala Monk board game cafe in Hamilton, was the first one we ever visited. My kids were 8 and 10 and had a ton of board game options. I loved that they could cruise the wall of games and choose any box they wanted to try. Their short attention spans meant we played half of each game we choose, but with over 1400 games to choose from, we were never board.

Here are our suggestions for the best places to see leaves change in Burlington and Hamilton.

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” is my favourite Anne of Green Gables quote.

It’s that time of year again. October is the perfect time to watch the fall leaves in Ontario change from fresh green to warm, fiery hues of red, orange and yellow before the frost of winter rolls in. Here are our suggestions for the best places to see leaves change in Burlington and Hamilton.

Looking For Winter Fun? We Got You!

Kelso Conservation Area

Park Main Gate: 5234 Kelso Road, Milton, ON

Kelso Summit: 5301 Steeles Ave W, Milton, ON

How can you beat a chairlift ride above the treetops where you can see for miles and miles?! Not only is the view gorgeous, but the fall chairlift ride doubles as an unforgettable day trip experience. Book your visit to the park online and add on a chairlift ride to witness some spectacular views from above. This is one of my favourite ways to view fall colours in Ontario.

Chairlift rides are available Weekends and Thanksgiving Monday starting September 28 until October 27, 2024. Riders must be at least 42″ or 107cm in height to ride the chair. $8.00 in advance and $10.00 on site fee +HST. Chairlift Ride tickets can be purchased on-site at the base of the bridge and online.

Chedoke Radial Trail

Address: Trail entrances are located at Hillcrest Avenue (just east of Dundurn Street South), Chedoke Golf Course, and at Scenic Drive (at Upper Paradise Road).

This is one of my family’s favourite walks for any season. My kids love it because there are so many unique things to see while you walk. I love it because the tree cover makes you forget you’re in the middle of a busy city. Stroller-friendly and dog-friendly. You can access it from the base or the peak, but we choose the base where you can park easily for a small charge.

Climb Burlington’s Mount Nemo

Address: 5317 Guelph Line, Burlington, ON

Mount Nemo possibly has the best view of Burlington. The hike is rated as easy, and it’s great for kids and dogs on leashes. There are many lookout points like the one pictured, and you’ll have a birds-eye view of the treetops as the colours change.  Parking is available for a small fee unless you have a Conservation Halton membership.

Dundas Valley Conservation Area

Address: 650 Governors Road, Dundas, ON

The hiking trails will keep you closer to the ground than my other suggestions, but the tree canopy will more than makeup for it! Dundas Valley Conservation Area is another one of my daughter’s favourite hikes because there is just so much to see. There are freshwater streams, bridges, downed logs that are perfect for climbing, and of course the Hermitage Ruins. Walk through these smooth, wheel-friendly trails and you’ll agree that it is one of the best places to see leaves change in Hamilton, Ontario.

Have you visited these trails and conservation areas this year? Maybe you have another hidden gem with beautiful fall views? If you do, please share it in the comments and we will add it to our list. In the meantime, here are some more fall articles you may enjoy:

Hilton Falls Conservation Area

Read more about Hilton Falls Conservation Area here

Address: 4985 Campbellville Rd, Milton, ON

Hilton Falls Conservation Area in the fall is a stunning sight. As the leaves change, the forest’s colors burst forth, creating a beautiful backdrop for hikers. Sixteen Mile Creek flows gently, providing a calming ambiance. Trails like the Beaver Dam Trail and Hilton Falls Trail lead visitors through this seasonal spectacle. It’s a great time for a picnic or a serene moment by Hilton Falls, making it a must-visit for nature lovers in the fall.

There are so many natural playgrounds near Burlington and Hamilton, and visiting one with a picnic in tow makes for an excellent and inexpensive summer day!

What makes it a “natural” playground?

A natural playground is a play space that includes elements from the earth. Think logs, boulders, tree stumps, wooded fixtures, and more. These pieces can make up all or most of the playground, and work in tandem with cargo nets, swings, slides, and monkey bars to make for unique and impressive play spaces.

Some natural playgrounds, as we note below, include massive truck tires, plants, and water features, too.

Most of these playgrounds will require a drive to get to unless you’re lucky enough to leave near one (jealous!) so we like to suggest making a day of it. Pack a picnic, bring some toys like balls, kites, and frisbees. The larger natural playgrounds can keep kids entertained for hours and hours.

Riverside Park

709 Woolwich St, Guelph, ON

The playground structures are very large and offer lots of space for running and playing. The structures are a mix between natural pieces and modern equipment including a wooden fish and a grasshopper-shaped climber. Read all about our visit here.

Exhibition park

81 London Road West, Guelph, ON

The Park is home to a few different play areas, each one more impressive than the last. There’s a huge section that can best be described as a “spider web of logs”. Immediately their shoes were off and the kids were scaling the logs and making their way from one end to the other. The heights range from about 2 feet at the lowest point to 7 or 8 feet at the highest.

Jaycee Park

1520 Gulleden Dr., Mississauga ON

Imaginations will run wild when you see the “city skyscrapers” and cargo nets (hello, Spiderman!) There are so many unique ways to climb and slide here. In the picture below, you can see the mini-trampoline – so fun! And take a look at the saucer swing. They are always a huge hit at the playground. See our pictures and read our review here.

Big parks are awesome, but there’s a lot to be said about having a whole park to yourself that just lets the imagination run wild! Chappel East Parkette, sometimes referred to as East Chappel Park is smaller, and its natural elements and massive owl structure make it an ideal setting for imagination play. Read our review and see more pictures of Chappel East Parkette here.

William Connell Park

When you visit William Connell Park in Hamilton you’ll be treated to a combination of a natural playground, traditional playgrounds, and more sports fields than you could imagine! Read our review and see more photos here.

Perth Park

Perth Park is a neighbourhood park, which means parking is a challenge. It’s nestled in a neighbourhood and offers a ton of ways to climb and balance, plus equipment that gives lots of options to use your imagination. Read our review and see more pictures here.

Wayne Gretzky Park

Located at Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre, this is a small but mighty parkette that provides spaces for gathering, sand play, creative play and climbing.

Central Elementary School in Dundas

73 Melville St, Dundas, ON

The site – home of Central Elementary School in Dundas – features an ancient, 100-year-old, 17,000 lbs, 8’ wide silver maple trunk (donated by the City of Hamilton Forestry), an amphitheatre, a wetland teaching garden and significant succession planting to replace the dying Ash canopy.

Bernie Morelli Community Centre

876 Cannon St E, Hamilton, ON

Located just outside Bernie Morelli Community Centre in Hamilton. The team converted a concrete courtyard into a natural playground for the visitors and the community.

Matilda Street Natural Playground

238 King St. West, Dundas, ON

Interesting facts about Matilda Street’s playground: “Prior to being a playground, this parcel was previously a gas station. Due to site contamination and restrictions, 100% of the installation had to go above the existing grade and the natural playground was the clay cap on top of the lot.” What a great way to repurpose an otherwise unusable plot of land!

Paul Coffey Park

3430 Derry Rd E, Mississauga, ON

The fairytale-inspired theme creates a memorable space that is an attraction for community members of all ages across the city. Built into a hillside adjacent to Paul Coffey Arena are three, four and a half metre high towers topped with colourful turrets and flags, which can be easily seen from the street.

Moffat Creek Public School

710 Myers Rd, Cambridge, ON

The site is nestled in the Grand River watershed, flanked by nature trails, soccer fields and the school building.  Because of its prime location, the playground is frequented not only by students but also by sports teams, summer camps and the neighbouring community. The planning team’s goals for the playground included promoting imaginative play, fostering a sense of adventure, and providing children with the opportunity to test their skills and allow them to make risk-taking decisions in an appropriate play setting.

Cherry Picking in Niagara Region

Cherry picking in Southern Ontario’s Niagara Region is a popular summer activity, offering families a chance to enjoy the outdoors and pick fresh, delicious cherries. Here are some key details and tips for a successful cherry picking trip:

When to Go Cherry Picking

  • Season: Cherry picking season in the Niagara Region typically runs from late June to early July. The exact timing can vary depending on the weather and growing conditions, so it’s always a good idea to check with local farms for the most accurate dates.

Types of Cherries

  • Sweet Cherries: These are the most common type found in the Niagara Region. They are usually available from late June to early July.
  • Sour (Tart) Cherries: These are typically available a bit later than sweet cherries, often in early to mid-July. Sour cherries are great for baking and preserves.

What to Bring

  • Containers: Many farms provide containers for picking, but it’s a good idea to bring your own sturdy containers or baskets, especially if you plan to pick a lot.
  • Sun Protection: The sun can be strong, so bring hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect yourself.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for walking and standing.
  • Water and Snacks: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated and snacks to keep everyone energized.
  • Bug Spray: Depending on the time of day and location, bugs can be an issue, so it’s wise to have some bug spray on hand.
  • Cash: Some farms may not accept credit or debit cards, so bring cash just in case.

Tips for Cherry Picking

  • Check Farm Policies: Each farm may have different rules and hours of operation, so check their websites or call ahead.
  • Arrive Early: The best cherries are often picked early in the day, so try to arrive early to get the best selection.
  • Pick Carefully: Handle cherries gently to avoid bruising them. Twist the cherries off the stems to avoid damaging the trees.
  • Sample Before Picking: Some farms allow you to taste a cherry or two before you start picking. This helps ensure you’re happy with the flavor and quality.
  • Storage: Cherries are best picked fresh and eaten soon after, but if you need to store them, keep them in a cool place and wash them just before eating.

Recommended Farms in the Niagara Region

  • Cherry Avenue Farms: Known for their large, sweet cherries, and they offer a great family-friendly experience.
  • Parkway Orchards: Offers a variety of cherries and other fruits, and has a beautiful setting for a family outing.
  • Peach Country Farm Market: A well-known farm that offers cherry picking along with other seasonal fruits and activities.

Before heading out, it’s always best to check the latest information on the farm’s website or give them a call to confirm the picking schedule and any special requirements or events they might have.

Enjoy your cherry picking adventure in the Niagara Region!
