Oakville‘s Coronation Park is a beautiful park situated on the shore of Lake Ontario. It’s 23+ acres of beauty, and it’s an ideal destination for your next day trip.

No matter the season, Coronation Park is beautiful. It offers beautiful views of Lake Ontario and a variety of ways to stay active and outdoors with your kids. Located between Third Line and Fourth Line and offering 200+ parking spots, this park is a popular spot on weekends in the summer.

Two Playgrounds for Double the Fun!

Coronation Park is home to two playgrounds, each catering to different ages. The smaller playground looks like a treehouse village and has equipment that lets little ones safely climb, crawl and explore at their own pace and at appropriate heights. 2 slides, 3 baby swings and 1 special needs swing, climbers and imaginative play make this park a favourite for the under 5 kiddos.

The second park at Coronation Park is perfect for your climbers! The playground structure offers a variety of ways to climb up and 5 ways to slide down. And once they make their way to the top there are 4 slides for them to zoom down. There are also swings and 3 large, separate rock climbing walls.

Coronation Park Splash Pad

This just might be the coolest splash pad we’ve been to this summer. With it’s regal them and super-sized crown that dumps a TON of water, it’s as fun to watch as it is to play in. There are lots of interactive ways to play at this spray pad like directing the trupmets or shields that shoot water. Coronation Park splash pad also features a little misting/low-pressure spray zone for the little ones. Just sitting around the splash pad keeps you cool because the mist floats over.

As you can tell from the pictures, there are lots of shady spots at Coronation Park, even on the playground itself.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park in Oakville is just one of the 340 Ontario Parks. We visit multiple times a year in every season because there’s always something fantastic to do at Bronte Creek. Here are some highlights of what you can expect when you visit. If you enjoy this park and playground you’ll want to explore these playgrounds too.

The Children’s Play Barn

Your admission to the day use area includes unlimited play at the play barn. Kids will love that they get to run, jump, swing and slide inside a real barn. Open spring, summer and fall.

Springtime on the Farm

Bronte Creek is home to many animals including cows, goats, chickens, peacocks, sheep, rabbits and more! There are animals around throughout most seasons. Visit in the spring when you can meet baby animals that were born earlier that year.

Most animal experiences are open in spring, summer and fall.

meeting farm animals at Bronte Creek Provincial Park

Harvest and Winter Festivals

Visit the Spruce Lane Farmhouse on the fourth weekend in September for the Harvest Festival. Pick up a pumpkin and enjoy yummy snacks like kettle corn and freshly pressed cider. Fall is a great time to visit the animals and take a wagon ride over to the play barn.

Winter at Bronte Creek brings on the Victorian Christmas preparations, games and food of the festive season. Enjoy crafts, stories, treats and games. It’s certain to get you into the spirit of the season.

Check out the Friends of Bronte Creek website to see if there are any special events happening.

Walk The Gnome Road

The Gnome Road is a great reason to visit. It’s home to little wooden houses decorated like gnome homes. Follow along a very stroller-friendly walking path just at the tree line near the play barn and yellow playground.

There is a good tree canopy as well, so some shade for anyone who needs a break. Open all year.

The gnome road at bronte creek

Bronte Creek Swimming Pool Closed

Bronte Creek Pool has been a family favourite for years because of its size and beach entry. The park has confirmed that it will remain closed for now. Personally I don’t see it reopening anytime soon, unfortunately.

See The Salmon Run – Don’t Miss This!

Fall is the time of year when the salmon migration runs through Bronte Creek Park. We first saw them in 2020, and it was honestly magical. Nature controls the migration, so there is no specific time to see them. They generally make their way to spawning grounds in September/October.

Directions to a viewing area. Park in Lot F, and walk toward Spruce Lane Farm. Behind the barns and the cow pasture, there is a trail marker for the Half Moon Valley Trail. When you get to a fork in the trail, go left, which is trail 4.

Tip: Bring appropriate footwear and a camera. Note that this trail has stairs.

Bronte Creek Animals

When we visited in the fall, we thought the barns we all empty for the season. We were pleasantly surprised to see the cows were out and so were these massive rabbits!

Bronte Creek Park rabbits and animals

The Old Oak Tree

We read about the great White Oak tree, which started growing in 1685. I was surprised to learn it is one of the biggest oak trees in Ontario.

So Many Playgrounds!

Kids will have fun at the playgrounds and play structures as you make your way through the park.

Easy Walking Trails

Bronte has stroller-friendly trails that are easy for kids. You can walk by the creek, among the tall trees, or on the gravel paths that go all around the park.

While you’re walking at this Oakville Park, look for the unusual cylindrical buildings and picnic shelters with real wood-burning fireplaces and sinks. Lots of opportunities for using your imaginations, and a ton of green space to run off all that energy kids have.

Tip: Bring lunch or dinner and have a picnic.

Even More Reasons To Love bronte Creek

Bronte is a park that offers educational programs like the Maple Syrup Festival, Ghost Walks, Camper Halloween, and Victorian Christmas. It’s a popular destination for classes and families looking for interactive experiences throughout the year.

Bring your furry friend and let them enjoy a little fresh air freedom at the dedicated leash-free section of the park.

Disc golf is a challenging and fun activity in nice weather. Bring your own frisbees, stand at the marker, and throw. Your goal is to land your disk in or as close as possible to the hole. Perfect for some fresh air fun, and no experience necessary.

Come in the winter months and enjoy cross-country skiing and tobogganing with the family.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park camping is easy and ideal for first-timers because if things don’t go as planned, you’re not far from home. I know many families who have gotten their “camping legs” at Bronte. You can tent or RV camp from May through October, or stay at one of the park’s yurts. For camping fees check here.

Tips for Your Visit

Comfort stations include washroom facilities with flush toilets and handwashing facilities. They are near the Playbarn, Spruce Lane Farmhouse and various points around the park.

You can hike and bike on the trails.

Bring your binoculars because we permit and encourage bird watching.

Bronte has picnic benches all throughout the park, so pack a picnic or snack spread and dine al fresco.

Admission and Park Memberships

Bronte Creek Provincial Park offers a variety of price deals and discounts. Prices vary for everything from walk-in day use to RV camping. You can find them all here on their official website.

A great friend recommended we visit Heritage Green sports complex in Stoney Creek and boy are we glad they did! Here’s why we think you should plan a visit next time you’re in Hamilton!

We Loved Heritage Green Sports Park

It’s not hard to get my kids to go to a park, and it’s so simple when I tell them there’s a zipline! Ziplines are so exhilarating for kids of all ages. Heritage Green Sports Park’s playground has a double zipline, one regular one and one special needs swing chair zipline – this is the first one I’ve ever seen! My kids tried them both out – naturally – and they’re both so exciting!

Looking for the best playgrounds worth visiting? Read all of our reviews here.

heritage green sports park playground zipline

The entire playground was filled with play gear that I had never seen before. A mini ropes course and a rope climbing pyramid are great for kids who love to climb and swing and use their imagination. Their height makes them perfect for big kids and little ones. The rope pyramid spins if you’ve got some muscle, but doesn’t spin fast enough to be scary or dangerous.

Challenging Climbers

My kids were surprised that this park didn’t have any slides, but they would gladly swap sliding for climbing, so slides weren’t missed at all. The standard and baby swings were fun, but my kids absolutely loved the hammock swing the most! Such a unique piece of equipment and the kids at the park were using it in a variety of ways. Heritage Green Park really stimulated their imaginations!

Download one of our outdoor scavenger hunts and add an extra element to your park play

Splash Pad and Sports Fields, Too

We were there on a day that was a cool 14 degrees out and the splash pad was still on, so if you’re up for a challenge, feel free to bring your swimsuit. On a hot summer day, these water jets and tipping buckets will make for a great splash pad and park visit. Bring some snacks or a picnic and eat at the tables.

The many athletic fields use a majority of the space at Heritage Green Sports Park it’s home to. They’re new and beautiful, and already well-appreciated by the soccer and baseball players.

Welcome to Wild Waterworks in Hamilton, Ontario! Nestled in the heart of the city, this thrilling water park offers an exciting escape from the summer heat. From exhilarating water slides to lazy rivers, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. In this article, we’ll take you on a detailed journey through the park, highlighting its attractions, amenities, and everything else you need to know for an unforgettable day of fun and adventure.

2025 Update!

Opening date TBC – stay tuned!

Getting to Wild Waterworks

Wild Waterworks is conveniently located at Confederation Park in Hamilton. Whether you’re driving or using public transportation, reaching the park is a breeze. The park offers ample parking spaces for those who choose to drive. For public transport users, there are several bus routes that connect to Confederation Park, making it easily accessible for visitors from all over the city.

Address to punch into your GPS: 680 Waterfront Trail, Hamilton, ON L8E 3L8

Attractions

Water Slides: Get ready for an adrenaline rush as you plunge down the exhilarating water slides at Wild Waterworks. From twisting turns to heart-pounding drops, these slides will leave you screaming with delight. Highlights include the “Kamikaze,” a vertical drop slide, and the “Sidewinder,” which sends you spinning in a bowl-like structure.

Wave Pool: Cool off in the massive wave pool, where you can experience the excitement of the ocean without leaving the city. Relax on a tube or ride the waves as they crash against you. The wave pool offers an excellent opportunity for swimmers of all ages to enjoy the water.

Lazy River: Take a break from the thrills and hop on a tube for a leisurely float down the lazy river. Meandering through the park, this tranquil attraction allows you to soak in the beautiful surroundings while enjoying a gentle current that carries you along.

Spray and Splash Pad: Designed especially for younger visitors, the spray and splash pad is a safe and interactive area for kids to cool off and have fun. With water jets, fountains, and play structures, children can splash around and let their imaginations run wild.

Amenities and Services

Cabana Rentals: For those seeking a VIP experience, Wild Waterworks offers cabana rentals. These private, shaded areas provide a perfect oasis to relax, unwind, and enjoy the park. Each cabana comes with comfortable seating, a mini-fridge, and dedicated food and beverage service. We’ve never booked one, but I spoke to some parents with younger kids, and a cabana offered them a beacon of sorts for kids to return to in between the fun.

Food and Refreshments: When hunger strikes, you’ll find various food stands and concessions offering a range of tasty treats. From classic burgers and fries to ice cream and slushies, there’s something to satisfy every craving. Don’t forget to stay hydrated by grabbing a refreshing drink from one of the many beverage stations.

Safety and Lifeguards: Wild Waterworks employs trained lifeguards who are always vigilant and ready to respond in case of an emergency. Additionally, the park provides life jackets free of charge for those who want an extra layer of safety while enjoying the water attractions.

Tips for a Great Visit To Wild Waterworks

Plan Ahead: To make the most of your visit, check the park’s website for operating hours and any special events. Arriving early in the day can help you beat the crowds and secure a prime spot near your favourite attractions. Arriving after 4 means you get to take advantage of their sundown pricing, which we detail below.

Bring Essentials: Sunscreen, towels, and comfortable footwear are essential items to pack for your trip. Don’t forget to bring extra clothing for after your water adventures, as well as any personal items you may need throughout the day. The park offers free life jackets in a variety of sizes, on a first-come first-serve basis.

Stay Hydrated: Spending a day in the sun can be dehydrating, so make sure to drink plenty of water. You can also bring refillable water bottles to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.

Follow Park Rules: Always adhere to the park’s rules and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Listen to the instructions of lifeguards and staff members, and be mindful of height and age restrictions for certain attractions.

Rent a Tube: We’ve been to Wild Waterworks in Hamilton a handful of times, and I highly recommend paying for a rental tube. A rental tube means you can enter the lazy river at any of the various entrance points, instead of having to line up and wait at the one entrance with tubes. It saves you time and means you get more time on the river and less in lines.

Back for 2025! Enjoy free outdoor movies near you this summer! Nothing tells you it’s summertime like the release of the movies in the park schedule!

You may be asking why I love an outdoor movie so much. I’ll tell you! I really think these are the ideal family activity for a summer evening. Very little preparation needs to go into the outing. We sometimes picked up McDonalds or a cheap pizza and ate it picnic-style on the grass before the movie started. Other times we get kid-approved charcuterie-style dinners. For some reason, kids will eat lots of anything when it’s served al fresco!

I don’t know about your kids, but mine loved going to the free outdoor movies in the park in their pajamas, and that made the transition to bed pretty easy. Another win!

My kids loved that this was an event filled with other kids. It was like their version of Coachella haha! Big performance, people everywhere and a very casual vibe. They’ll meet and make new friends and the fresh air will tire them out. Many of the free outdoor movies are help at big park spaces, so there’s usually a playground to enjoy and maybe even a splash pad! Maybe it’s better than Coachella?

What Should You Bring To Movies In The Park?

You don’t need much to make this casual outdoor activity with kids great. Here’s what we suggest bringing with you to the free outdoor movie night

 • Camping chair or picnic blanket to sit on
 • Drinks and snacks for everyone
 • Wear your fave jammies
 • Bring a small blanket just in case the temp drops once the sun goes down
 • Bug spray – just in case
 • Something to do before the movie starts – a frisbee, a ball, skipping rope, a scooter, an activity book, etc.

What Free Outdoor Movies Are Playing in 2025?

Here is the list of scheduled dates and locations for Outdoor Movie Nights in Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Niagara. Keep your eyes on the forecast and if it looks questionable, confirm the movie is still playing before heading to the park.

Grand River Rafting Adventure – Tips From Our Trip https://activeparents.ca/grand-river-rafting-is-perfect-for-families/ https://activeparents.ca/grand-river-rafting-is-perfect-for-families/#comments Thu, 29 May 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://activeparents.ca/?p=37557 Floating along the Grand River was definitely our best summer adventure!

The post Grand River Rafting Adventure – Tips From Our Trip appeared first on Active Parents.

]]>

Our best summer adventure with the kids was definitely the day we spent with Grand River Rafting Company, floating along the Grand River. Kids of all ages – and adults of all ages – will love it. Here’s why.

More Adventures We Recommend

online booking for grand river rafting

Book your trip online, it is easy to do. I also loved that they have various cancellation policies due to weather, etc. so you can rest a little easier. You get a full refund if you cancel 48 hours before is reassuring. Booking a time slot allowed us to see how many other people had already booked during the time we were hoping to go.

Turns out they can host about 1000 visitors a day on the river! Crazy, because the Grand River is so wide and long that we rarely saw other groups.

Is It Safe For Kids To Raft The Grand River?

We had a group of eight: three adults and five children. We decided to go on a float down the Grand River. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d never done anything like this, nor had my kids, but I was the most novice of the crew. Let’s just say I rocked it. And I felt like a real rafter by the end of our float.

The kids in my group ranged in age from 10 to 15 years old. A friend of mine who also rafted this same route had their 8-year-old in his own raft and he was just fine.

kids rafting on the grand river
Pictured here are a 14-year-old, a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old. We saw kids as young as 7/8 in their own rafts. The river is very calm and we felt so safe.

Getting Ready For Our River Rafting Adventure

We chose to do the Paris to Brant 13 km tour through Grand River Rafting Company. You park at Brant Conservation Area and check in with the rafting company there. This is where you park, and it’s also your final stop on the river tour. After we were told some safety tips and other instructions, we boarded a school bus to drive us to the top of the 13 km trail in Paris.

Once we got to the launch point in Paris, we got our turbo tube paddles and picked up our inflatable rafts down at the water. This is also the place where you would ask for a tether. Use the tether to tie yourself to your friends so you always stay together, or use it to tie your kid’s rafts to yours so they don’t float away. Even if you don’t think you’ll need a tether, I highly suggest getting one just in case.

setting sail at river rafting
This was our starting point where everyone in our time slot got into the river. Once you go under this bridge, you spread out and we only saw another group every hour or so.

Grand River Rafting Was Our Best Adventure on Water Thus Far!

Once I flopped ever-so-gracefully into my Turbo Tube, we were on our way! We set sail at about 12:30 p.m. and the Grand River is absolutely gorgeous at midday! The sun twinkles off the water and the views are spectacular. We departed with a group of 20 people on a bus. The Grand River is very wide, so we didn’t encounter anyone else unless we decided to.

We had kids with us aged 10 to 14. My 10-year-old was the youngest and the best at paddling. The good thing is because of the slow current, you don’t actually have to paddle until the last 1 km. You could gather your friends or family and coast through the riverway for hours without having to paddle a single stroke.

The Guide told us to look for the natural springs with fresh, drinkable water. The springs were small, but we found them. You need to pull your boat over to the shore and have an empty water bottle ready for filling. What a wonderful way to be connected to mother nature.

There is also a picnic stop at about 11km in. There were tables, trash cans and a port-a-potty. We stopped at the shore to eat some snacks. You could also tether yourselves together and snack right on the water.

Already Booking Our Next Visit

We had an amazing river rafting adventure with my kids. We would like to go on another one before school starts again. Grand River Rafting Company offers an amazing experience for only $39.99 plus HST. You can spend over 5 hours with friends in beautiful nature. Have fun and make memories with Grand River Rafting Company.

Rafting Tips from a non-expert

 • Sunscreen. There is absolutely zero shade on the river and the sun reflecting off the water will get ya!
 • Prepare to get soaked. You’re sitting in water the whole time, but it’s not nearly as uncomfortable as it sounds.
 • Bring or wear water shoes in case you need to get out and rescue your kids when they get stuck in shallow areas. Crocs, old runners, and water shoes all work.
 • Food/water in waterproof containers/baggies. Our kids loved sharing snacks back and forth.
 • Zipper bag for your cell phone and car keys, because they definitely will get very wet.
 • Full change of clothes for afterwards so you’re comfortable driving home.
 • Tether your kids, or at minimum take the tether rope when offered. We were out for 5 hours, so kids can get tired and we all know what a tired kid is like.
 • We let our 5 kids float ahead but within sight, and we moms just floated and caught up on everything that had been happening. Kids loved the independence and they can’t really go anywhere. Plus, the water is only a couple of feet deep, so we felt safe. As always, you do you, and what makes you feel comfortable.
 • We used Grand River Rafting to book our excursion. They’ve been around since 2006 and handled the entire experience so professionally. The equipment, lifejackets, and tour guides were amazing. No affiliation, just my recommendation.

]]>

There are so many ways to thank your child’s teacher for a great school year, but to make sure we were ranking high on our gift giving, we consulted some of our favourite local teachers to get the goods on the gifts they’ve appreciated the most.

Support your teacher’s passion with a charitable donation

Teachers are among the more selfless folks out there, so it’s no wonder that charitable donations ranked high on their gift list. Local charities like Halton Food for ThoughtCanadian Tire JumpStartThe Burlington Humane Society, and Food 4 Kids are big favourites of the teachers we spoke to, but a donation to any charity that helps kids be the best they can be is sure to be a winner. These locations all accept online donations, and a handmade card to your teacher telling them about your donation in their name is a lovely idea.

Are They A New Parent / Spouse?

If your teacher is getting married or having a baby in the near future, definitely take that into account. Search their registry if they have one, or pick up a little something meaningful. Maybe a onesie that relates to the subject they teach, or a duplicate of your own child’s favourite baby toy for their new baby to enjoy. How about a set of luggage tags for the engaged couple? One year, Burlington teacher Amy Spiers‘ class all went in together to buy her the luggage set from her wedding registry, and 10 years later she’s still using them, and thinking of the now-university-aged kids every time she does!

Less “Stuff”, Please and thank you

While every teacher agreed that any token of your appreciation is appreciated and unexpected, we suggest try not to add to their “things that need to be dusted” list. Unless your teacher has just moved out on their own, they probably have enough coffee cups and bubble bath, and unless you know them very well, things with scents are a tricky purchase.

Heather Smith, an educational assistant with the HDSB, loves that one of her parents takes the time to bake homemade treats for her twice a year. Consumables like gift cards are always welcome. Darcie Boutilier, a Kindergarten teacher, loves receiving gift cards for Indigo, Tim Horton’s and Starbucks. And Deb Duncan, a Milton high school teacher, loves that her students take their own money and purchase her Tim Horton’s or LCBO gift cards. It’s a big gesture, that doesn’t cost much.

“When in doubt, gift cards are the safest bet.”

gifts for teachers can help them Get a Jump on Next Year

Teachers spend a lot of their own money on classroom supplies, so help them get one step ahead of next year’s classroom with a gift card to Indigo or Dollarama. When you think of how many $20 shopping trips a teacher makes a year, a gift card could really help take the sting out of the pocketbook.

Or, for something more tangible, I’m sure you’ve noticed the option to “buy a classroom book” on the back of the Scholastic book order form. Classroom libraries always need a few new books each year, so help your child’s teacher get a jump on their next classroom with a few new level-appropriate books. Or purchase a series of books on a topic they’ve discussed that year: space, structures, diversity, historic persons, or living things perhaps?

Tug at Those Heartstrings

One of the most memorable gifts Holly B., an HDSB Kindergarten teacher received had each student completed a page for a class book, listing their favourite memory from the year. A parent organized and put it together, and it’s a definite keeper!

The Winner for best teacher gift Is…

And the ONE gift that EVERY teacher remarked as being their absolute favourite is… A handwritten note from home. Whether it’s from a parent or child, just hearing the positive feedback on your year in class is what keeps teachers going. They become second families to our kids and hearing about how they have impacted your child is definitely a gift they cherish for years.

“…a card with a handwritten and heartfelt note from the student and/or the parents is also one of the best gifts you can get as a teacher. I have many of those that I have saved over the years and look back on them and read them again from time to time. They are very meaningful to me.”
Paul Brandreth, Grade 5 Teacher, Halton District School Board.

And as always, no teacher ever expects a gift, but we know so many people like to thank them at the end of the year, and we wanted to help you do that. Three cheers for teachers!

Have you ever wish you could wave a magic wand and have your home stay tidy effortlessly? Same. While I can’t promise magic, I’ve got the next best thing for you. Today, we’re diving into the world of stress-free home organization with the wonderful Brittnei Gaudio. She’s sharing her tried-and-true tips that make keeping a tidy and decluttered house a breeze. Whether you’re a parent juggling toys or just looking to simplify your space, Brittnei Gaudio’s insights are pure gold. So, grab your favorite beverage, get cozy, and let’s unlock the secrets to a clutter-free life!

The One Minute Rule That Changed How I Tidy

If you’ve ever found yourself cleaning up toys at 10 p.m., or silently fuming about the kitchen counter that just won’t stay clear, you’ve in good company. I’m a mom of two, a business owner, and a former perfectionist. And I’ve learned the hard way that chasing a “perfect” home is exhausting – especially when you share it with small humans.

That’s why I started focusing on something else entirely: making my home easy to tidy. Not magazine-ready. Not Pinterest- perfect. Just livable, functional, and peaceful enough for our real life.

Enter: the one-minute rule. I wish I could take credit for it, but it comes from author and happiness researcher Gretchen Rubin. The rule is simple: if something takes less than a minute to do, do it now.

That’s it.

Because the reality is, clutter invites clutter. Those socks you stepped over earlier, eventually invite more socks, a change of clothes, maybe some books, oh & some mail.

So put the socks in the hamper. Put the jacket on the hook instead of the chair. Toss the granola bar wrapper into the bin instead of the counter. Close the drawer instead of leaving it cracked open. It’s the tiniest habits, but here’s the magic: these small wins stack up.

And over time, they create a home that’s easier to manage – not just for you, but for everyone who lives there.

When families I work with try this, they’ve often shocked by how big of a shift they feel. Less visual clutter, less nagging, less “I’ll get to it later” stress. It’s not about being tidy all the time – it’s about creating systems that make tidying feel less like a full-time job.

Because spoiler alert: kids are messy. Life is messy. But when everything has a home and everyone knows where that home is, tidying becomes a 10-mintue reset instead of a two-hour project eating into your weekend. That’s the kind of tidy I’m into – one that works with your family, not against it.

So the next time you’re standing in the doorway and wondering where even to start try this: just do the one thing that takes under a minute. Then another. And another. You’ll be amazed what shifts with those tiny bits of effort.

And if you’re craving more realistic ways to reclaim your space (and your sanity), I put together a free Daily Reset Checklist that shows you how to keep things feeling under control with just a few minutes a day. It’s the exact tool I use at home (and with my clients) to make tidying a whole lot less overwhelming.

You can grab it here: The Daily Reset Checklist

Because your home should support your life – not the other way around.

All 9 Burlington splash pads will be open on Saturday, May 17, 2025!

Dofasco Waterjet Plaza (aka Spencer Smith Park Splash Pad)

Located at 1340 Lakeshore Road

The Spencer Smith Park Splash Pad is possibly Burlington’s most famous spot in the summer. The picturesque location is frequented by locals and tourists from surrounding cities. The 30 waterjets spray intermittently and at different heights for kids to laugh and run through, while parents can sit on the perimeter in the sun or shade and watch their kids. The Spencer Smith Park splash pad is free to use, although parking is sometimes tricky and can cost you depending on the time of day you visit. The playground is right beside when you need a change of pace. Washrooms and a snack bar are just inside the building adjacent to the pad.

Spencer Smith Park Splashpad, also known as Dofasco Waterjet Plaza

Mountainside Pool and Splash Park

2205 Mount Forest Drive.

Recently renovated and even more fun for families! Mountainside Pool now offers a corkscrew side and a climbing wall that drops you right into the deep end of the pool! Kids of all ages will love the dumping bucket in the splash pad section.

Hidden Valley Park Splash Pad

Located at 1137 Hidden Valley Road.

This splash park in Burlington is one of our favourites. Visitors can easily spend the entire day enjoying the playground, the spray pad and the picnic space. Water jets shoot up from the pad that is surrounded by a park, greenspace, Hidden Valley Creek, and a covered gazebo perfect for a picnic. Plenty of other picnic tables around the park. The park is also home to the Burlington Model Railway Club. Ample parking and washrooms on site.

The city’s pool and splash park combo are always suggested as a parent’s favourite outdoor pool in Burlington. The gradual entry pool is large and bright, with clear eye-sights from one end to the other. The spray pad is separated from the pool and includes a huge dumping bucket that is a hit with all kids. Lots of water jets and fun accessories in the splash park. The pool has diving boards and a rock wall that is excellent for your little daredevils. There are many lifeguards on duty, and both shady and sunny spots to set up camp.

This Burlington splash pad features water jets from the concrete pad. With umbrellas, a pavilion and a seating area. Tennis courts and a playground nearby. This park is free to attend and washroom facilities are available.

3040 Tim Dobbie Drive

Norton Park splash pad in Burlington is huge in size and full of things to encourage kids to have fun. The round splash pad has water jets and is right beside a park, skate park, and green space. The Haber Recreation Centre is across the spacious parking lot, which gives you washrooms, indoor gyms, basketball courts, and the library. This may need to be a 2-day trip!

Orchard Park is the quintessential community park. It’s a favourite gathering spot for local families and features a splash pad with water jets spraying from the concrete pad. The Burlington Gallery – The History and Origin Story of Burlington, Ontario

The Burlington Gallery talks all about Burlington’s history and we honestly learned so many cool things about Burlington and its origins. The exhibits are fantastic and let you get right up close to the historic artefacts.

In The Burlington Gallery kids and grownups will learn all about the history of popular and significant Burlington landmarks. You will witness old toys and board games that our grandparents may have played with. We spent lots of time in this room and we learned a ton. My mother-in-law moved here when she was young, and knows many of the features that are no longer where they once stood.

Teachers and homeschooling families: This would be an excellent place for a field trip!

Enjoy A Stay at The Brant Inn

The second large room, called The Costume Gallery, was dedicated to The Brant Inn. Have you heard of it? I had heard a little bit about it, but it was a great exhibit to have Grandma at because she was familiar with so much of the history and the famous visitors it’s been host to in its time. She told the girls about the clothing, the music and the jewellery. It’s always great to foster that connection between Grandparents and grandkids.

Did you know Burlington played host to such famous names in music? I didn’t!

Essential Stop: The Children’s Gallery at Joseph Brant Museum

This section focuses on S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) and delivers it in a way kids will love and learn from. Each exhibit in the Children’s Gallery encourages kids to put their brains to use to solve problems and accomplish tasks. Your kids will love it here. My 11-year-old didn’t want to leave! And neither did my husband LOL.

Ride the pedal-powered bikes to see how far you can make it around Burlington. Use the massive light-up pegboard to create a picture. Everything your kids do will be hands-on and there are lots of options for open-ended exploration. Parents have the pleasure of sitting back and watching children learn through play.

Joseph Brant Museum underwent a phenomenal renovation that has created a beautiful destination for learning and exploring in Burlington. This gallery is a great bonus at this family and children’s museum.

Play some retro video games, compete against your pals to see who is a Guitar Hero, and get a glimpse behind the scenes of how video games and their graphics have evolved over the decades.

School break camp at Joseph Brant Museum are popular and get great reviews from parents. Each week has a different theme in the summer and every PA day camp has its own theme as well. Click here to learn more about children’s camps.

Don’t Miss The Gift Shop

One of my new favourite places to buy unique presents for friends and family (and a few for myself!) is the gift shop at the Museum. Their products are quality and curated with a keen eye for in-demand items for kids and adults. I love their mugs and keychains, and their wooden children’s toys are great for gifting to toddlers. You can shop their gift shop online here.

Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm – How It Came To Be

Just a short history of this sweet farm… Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm was created by Harry “Happy” Rolph when he build a bird sanctuary on his property. Happy, along with his wife Jen, built several ponds on the property to help attract more birds, and eventually grew to attract thousands of birds annually to the property.

When the couple decided to retire in the 70s, the sanctuary was purchased by the Province, City and Niagara Conservation Authority, and eventually was bought by the City of St. Catharines. To honour his work, the location was renamed Happy Rolph Bird Sanctuary in 1974.
