Hamilton is home to outdoor activities for kids and adults that you will love! Treetop Trekking in Hamilton offers fresh air activity and this is the perfect opportunity for kids to impress themselves with their skill and bravery!

Kinga and her children make a plan to visit multiple times. Each time they go, it’s better than the time before, so we asked her to tell us all about one of their favourite outdoor things to do in Hamilton: Treetop Trekking Hamilton, located at Binbrook Conservation Area.

What ages will enjoy Treetop Trekking?

Anyone from 0 to 100! If you can walk confidently, then you will have lots of fun here. My youngest just turned 5, and because of her age, we gravitate towards the Treewalk Village. It is open to all ages and is ideal for ages 3-7.

But that’s not all they offer for climbing fun! When you visit with your group, you will find various ropes courses with varying degrees of difficulty to challenge everyone. Kids from every age group will love their time spent in the trees. Don’t be surprised when they want to go back again and again!

Treewalk Village

The treewalk village treehouses at Treetop Trekking Hamilton are super fun! As long as a kiddo can walk they would fully enjoy it! Parents can get in on the fun alongside their kids. Treewalk Village is an exciting outdoor activity for everyone.

Everything at this Hamilton ropes course is netted in so that kids can’t fall out and there are 3 slides they can slide down on or they can walk back down. There is also a little obstacle course that’s on the ground they can test out.

Discovery Kids Course

Looking for a fun and a little more adventurous activity for young kids? The Discovery Courses are just what you are looking for! This activity is made for kids aged 5 to 8 that are also over 45″ tall. For this one, you only pay for the child and you can walk beside them as they do the whole course, it’s a bit higher off the ground than the one in the Treewalk Village but they would be fully harnessed in so no worries needed.

This junior aerial course is filled with wood bridges, balance logs, netted walkways, mini zip lines, and much more. All of the equipment and challenges are suspended 3-5 ft off the ground. Kids wear helmets for protection.

Zipline and Aerial Game trek at Treetop Trekking

Kids over 9, tweens, teens and adults must try the ziplines and aerial games while at Treetop Trekking Hamilton. What a great way to spend the day in nature, while also challenging yourself to a fun activity. No skill is required, and no experience is necessary. The entire experience is 3 hours in length and takes you through the forest via ziplines, suspension bridges, balance logs and even a Tarzan swing!

This fun activity is suitable for a wide range of visitors. Tree top Trekking Hamilton doesn’t need you t be experienced. The courses challenge your strength, balance and courage, in a safe environment. All of your necessary equipment is provided, so what are you waiting for? Book your visit today!

How much does it cost to go to Treetop Trekking Hamilton?

Treetop Trekking Hamilton is a popular place to visit, so pre-booking is definitely recommended for all visitors. Click here to book your visit. Pricing depends on age and which course(s) you’ll be doing. Here is a breakdown:

Treewalk Village – approx. 2 hours; requires 1 adult and 1+ children. Ages 3-17 are $22 and 18+ is $10 each.

Discover Courses – each child ages 5-8 is $27, no adult admission is required.

Zipline and Aerial Game Trek – for kids 9 to 11 years old who exceed 55 inches tall $49, plus an adult to accompany them $67. Teens 12-15 years old are $57 each, and everyone 16 and older is $67 per person. There’s also a family rate for families of 4 or more with at least 2 who are 16+. Save $5 – $8 per ticket this way.

Playtown in St. Catharines is a super fun destination for kids who love pretend play and using their imaginations to the max! Esther and her daughters visited and here’s what they experienced.

>> Find more Indoor Play Ideas here.

>> Looking for Toddler-Sized Indoor Play Centres? We’ve got a list of those, as well!

Do your kids love to pretend play? If they do, Playtown Niagara is the perfect place for you to visit!

This week, I took all four of my girls to Playtown, technically located in St. Catharines. Our first visit was a hit with my kids – ages 7, 6, 3, and 1. We met some friends there, stayed for two full hours, and my kids would only leave with promises to return.

shuttle and slide in the play section

After signing in, we took off our shoes and coats in their big walk-in closet and then headed through an alarmed door into a small cafe. The alarmed door is great to make sure little ones can’t sneak away like ninjas in the night! While there was no food or drink available for purchase, we were allowed to bring any of our own along. I dropped off our things on one of the tables, while my kids ran to explore. Before I knew it, I had no idea where they had gone, however, the security monitors in the cafe displayed each section clearly and it was easy to see which areas my kids had gravitated towards.

Imaginations Can Run Wild At Playtown in St. Catharines

The big room is split into different playhouses. There is an auto shop (pictured above) in addition to a diner, a grocery store, a theatre, a salon, an animal hospital, a raceway, and even a home! Along with this, in the middle of the big room, the kids can run and play with a space shuttle, a fire truck, and an ice cream truck. It was so fun watching where my kids picked to play, and how they used their imaginations in various ways. An added bonus? I didn’t have to clean up after them! Likewise, I was also thankful for my one-year-old that we found a toddler area with toys perfect for her.

Where Is Playtown Niagara?

Playtown Niagara is located at 150 Dunkirk Road in St. Catharines. Visit their website at playtownniagara.com

How Much Is Admission To Playtown Niagara?

You can choose public play or private play. Prices, hours and restrictions change often, so check them out online here.

What Ages Will Enjoy Playtown?

Esther’s kids are ages 1 through 7 and their age group was perfect for Playtown in St. Catharines.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Playtown Niagara?

Playtown Niagara’s drop-in hours for public play change week to week because they host special events and birthday parties so it is important to check the website or their Facebook page before you head on over.

Can You Bring Food To Playtown?

I loved that my kids could stop and eat some snacks at any time and I am thankful my friend thought of bringing coffees from a nearby Starbucks. The closest restaurants are about a five-minute drive, and another mom had the grand idea of bringing Happy Meals for her kids to enjoy in between their playing. Unfortunately, the washrooms inside the playground were out of order, so we did have to head out the doors of ‘PlayTown’ when my kids needed to go to the washroom.

Is Playtown Baby- and Stroller-Friendly?

Definitely! Babies will love exploring a section of their own with rainbow, padded floors and lots of new toys to play with. Strollers easily roll through the facility.

Good To Know Before You Go

  • Lots of parking onsite
  • Multiple washrooms
  • TV screens show all of the play areas so you can see your kids when they’re out of eyesight
  • Yes, they host events and special events, so call before you visit to make sure open play is on for that day

Make some memories of your own this summer when you and the whole family go cherry picking near me in the Niagara, Hamilton and Halton regions. We really do grow the best cherries out this way!

Cherry Picking in Niagara Region

Cherry picking in Southern Ontario’s Niagara Region is a popular summer activity, offering families a chance to enjoy the outdoors and pick fresh, delicious cherries. Here are some key details and tips for a successful cherry picking trip:

When to Go Cherry Picking

  • Season: Cherry picking season in the Niagara Region typically runs from late June to early July. The exact timing can vary depending on the weather and growing conditions, so it’s always a good idea to check with local farms for the most accurate dates.

Types of Cherries

  • Sweet Cherries: These are the most common type found in the Niagara Region. They are usually available from late June to early July.
  • Sour (Tart) Cherries: These are typically available a bit later than sweet cherries, often in early to mid-July. Sour cherries are great for baking and preserves.

What to Bring

  • Containers: Many farms provide containers for picking, but it’s a good idea to bring your own sturdy containers or baskets, especially if you plan to pick a lot.
  • Sun Protection: The sun can be strong, so bring hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect yourself.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for walking and standing.
  • Water and Snacks: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated and snacks to keep everyone energized.
  • Bug Spray: Depending on the time of day and location, bugs can be an issue, so it’s wise to have some bug spray on hand.
  • Cash: Some farms may not accept credit or debit cards, so bring cash just in case.

Tips for Cherry Picking

  • Check Farm Policies: Each farm may have different rules and hours of operation, so check their websites or call ahead.
  • Arrive Early: The best cherries are often picked early in the day, so try to arrive early to get the best selection.
  • Pick Carefully: Handle cherries gently to avoid bruising them. Twist the cherries off the stems to avoid damaging the trees.
  • Sample Before Picking: Some farms allow you to taste a cherry or two before you start picking. This helps ensure you’re happy with the flavor and quality.
  • Storage: Cherries are best picked fresh and eaten soon after, but if you need to store them, keep them in a cool place and wash them just before eating.

Recommended Farms in the Niagara Region

  • Cherry Avenue Farms: Known for their large, sweet cherries, and they offer a great family-friendly experience.
  • Parkway Orchards: Offers a variety of cherries and other fruits, and has a beautiful setting for a family outing.
  • 20 Valley Harvest Farm: Offers a variety of cherries for picking along with other seasonal fruits and local products in their farm shop.

Before heading out, it’s always best to check the latest information on the farm’s website or give them a call to confirm the picking schedule and any special requirements or events they might have.

Enjoy your cherry picking adventure in the Niagara Region!

This summer doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg just because you have some kids to entertain! To help you make the most of your family time, we’ve got 50+ things to do this summer when you want to have fun without leaving home.

6 Ways to Play In Your Driveway

  • Encourage and inspire in chalk art. Write inspiring messages at the end of the driveway to spread cheer, positivity, and love to your neighbourhood and people passing by.
  • Make a chalk mosaic like the one below from The Idea Room. It’s a big impact and so simple!
  • Make a chalk obstacle course with spots to jump, spin, balance, and hop. Check out these clever ways to play hopscotch with your preschooler.
  • Practice sight words and spelling words! Get your math lesson in with equations – adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, fractions…
  • Chalk a bike town. Include all the fun places you want to explore once this has all passed.
  • Jump Rope and learn a new rhyme. We found the same plastic jump ropes on amazon and like doing the longer one together.
  • Find a story and chalk about it! Chalk by Bill Thomson is about three children who find a bag of magical chalk and quickly discover that their drawings come to life!

12 Ideas for Backyard Fun

  • Plan an outdoor picnic. Grab a blanket or get out a picnic table. Pack your lunch in those neglected lunch boxes (and double-check they are cleaned out)! Be super crazy and eat your dessert first!
  • Practice your bird calls. The National Audubon Society has a list of some common birds that are probably flitting around in your backyard this time of year.
  • Create an obstacle course. Down the slide, through your swings, around the house, jumping through hoops and grab a stopwatch for a test on your kids’ agility (and yours)!
  • Make a Nature Journal. Conservation Halton has some tips on how to make one and what to include in it.
  • Make a fairy garden or toy playground. Gather sticks, rocks, plastic containers, and maybe toilet paper rolls! Another variation? What about a Lego friend outdoor oasis? Time to dig out all those forgotten little toys and give them new life outside.
  • Read on a blanket. Get some extra vitamin D as soon as that ground warms up. If it is warm enough set up in the grass or head to the porch! Check out books from the library with curbside pickup.
  • Get active! Try Go Noodle or Cosmic Kids Yoga in the backyard.
  • Outdoor Movies. Projectors for backyard use are becoming increasingly affordable with many options around the price of two outings to the movie theatre. Fences or clotheslines with sheets make great screens as well as the side of the house or garage door. Pop some popcorn and make a cozy spot to enjoy a new or old favourite movie.

16 Creative Activities to Do at Home

  • Pick up a Grab and Go Activity to complete at home. These fun kits have everything you need inside
  • Paint and Hide Kindness Rocks – Add a little colour to your day and extra fun to your walks by painting rocks to leave for others to discover
  • Create tye die t-shirts as we did!
  • Make a birdfeeder! We have some easy-to-make birdfeeder ideas in this article
  • Cool off with these sponge soaker balls.
  • Use up some of your mismatched socks and make bubble snakes!
  • Channel your inner Picasso and do squirt gun painting.
  • We are big into sending postcards – they’re colourful and easy to write. Plus, people love seeing them in their mailboxes.
  • Start a scrapbook and include notes from friends and family.
  • Make Playdough! This recipe doesn’t need to be cooked and doesn’t need cream of tartar – so simple.
  • Learn to crochet. My friend Deanne at Small But Kinda Mighty has great intro videos on crochet on her YouTube channel, suitable for all ages!
  • Study and practice the art of paper folding with Origami. Start with a fortune teller or dog! Red Ted Art on YouTube has lots of great tutorials.
  • Draw! Find a drawing tutorial video on YouTube. Our favourites are Art for Kids Hub and Draw So Cute.
  • Send artwork you create at home to a nursing home. Call before to make sure they are accepting cards and art.
  • Play a new board game! We’ve got a list of our top faves here.

4 Hot Ways to Cool Down at Home

  • Get out that sprinkler, pool, or just the garden hose! With most of the pools and splash pads closed this year don’t worry about your grass this Summer. You’ll have time next Summer for a perfect yard. If you want to venture out try one of these beaches.
  • Make a homemade Slip N’ Slide! With a tarp, some dish soap and a garden hose, enjoy an afternoon of slippery fun!
  • Have a water balloon fight! Fill up some water balloons, assemble teams, aim and splash!
  • Build a cool fan tent! Use a thin bed sheet and a box fan to make a cozy but cool hideout and enjoy your favourite book, nap or draw!

17 Things to Do Around Your Neighbourhood

  • Go on a scavenger hunt. Rainbows, hearts, bears, what can you find? We have outdoor and indoor scavenger hunts on our website.
  • Geocache. Be mindful when touching geocaches and consider gloves and/or using your hand sanitizer.
  • Counting walk. Count the number of… trees, cars, squirrels, birds, cats, dogs, people, something you normally see in your neighbourhood.
  • Chalk a trail. Leave a trail of hearts on your walk for fun little surprises.
  • Pick up trash. Teach your kiddos our responsibility to our planet and why it’s important not to litter.
  • Freeze walk. Play music and when the music stops freeze or strike a pose.
  • Adapt a classic game for a twist on your walk. Red light. Green light. Simon Says. Mother, May I. I-Spy. These classic games can be incorporated into fun walks with kiddos.
  • Bring a stuffed animal friend. Everything is more fun with your favourite stuffy or doll when you are little.
  • Grab the binoculars. This keeps kids busy and you never know what you’ll run into. Don’t have real ones? Make your little one some pretend ones out of toilet paper rolls, thanks to Pinterest.
  • Map it. Print or draw a map of your neighbourhood for kids to follow. Add landmarks
  • Take pictures. Challenge older kiddos with a photo challenge. Or do a photo scavenger hunt.
  • Take a night walk. We bring flashlights and look for bats, stars, and houses that have pulled out their holiday (Christmas and Halloween decorations) to spread cheer.
  • Research your neighbourhood’s history. Many neighbourhoods have historic buildings, houses and stores. Research their history and see when they were built! The Burlington Historical Society and this Hamilton site have lots of great resources on their website.
  • Scoot around on scooters. Try out one of these skate parks. A friendly reminder to wear your helmet!

Nestled in the Aldershot community of Burlington lies a hidden gem, the Cherry Hill Gate. This nature reserve, part of the Royal Botanical Gardens lands, beckons outdoor fans, offering a perfect blend of wilderness, charming hiking trails, and a peaceful atmosphere. Come along with us as we delve into the wonders that await visitors at Cherry Hill Gate.

Like the outdoors? You will love these…

Where Is Cherry Hill Gate?

Located in Burlington, Ontario, Cherry Hill Gate is part of the Royal Botanical Gardens family of natural properties. Access to the trail is free and easy – two reasons we love this location so much. The entrance is on the north side of Plains Road, just west of the main RBG Centre. Free parking is available if you are a member, otherwise, you can pay for parking at the meters.

Wildlife Love Cherry Hill Gate

Cherry Hill is a sanctuary for wildlife, providing a harmonious habitat for many species. Keep an eye out for deer if you visit early in the morning or at dusk. It is not uncommon to encounter squirrels darting playfully or glimpse a fox silently surveying its surroundings. The delicate songs of warblers and the croaks of frogs create a symphony of nature’s vibrant chorus. For nature enthusiasts and photographers, Cherry Hill offers endless opportunities to observe and capture the beauty of these remarkable creatures in their natural habitat.

What kind of wildlife should you be on the lookout for? Birds, both in the trees and in Grindstone Creek, squirrels, chipmunks, and small (non-poisonous) snakes. In the creeks and ponds, watch for frogs and salamanders, and you may even see some water mammals like beavers!

Many visitors bring sunflower seeds, peanuts and other favourites to feed the birds and chipmunks.

Trails and Hiking

Cherry Hill Gate boasts an array of picturesque hiking trails that cater to various skill levels. From leisurely strolls to challenging hikes, there is something for everyone. The trails wind through lush woodlands, meandering alongside babbling brooks and captivating wildflower meadows. Nature lovers will relish the chance to explore the diversity of ecosystems present in this unique environment.

The Cherry Blossom Trail is ideal for a leisurely walk, guiding you through a beautiful forest adorned with vibrant cherry blossoms in the spring. If you seek a more challenging adventure, the Summit Trail offers breathtaking views from the top, rewarding hikers with panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape.

The trail is made up of packed gravel and sand, wooden boardwalks and bridges like the one below. It’s very stroller/wagon friendly. There is a steep hill at the very beginning of the trail, but as long as you hold on tight, you’ll be fine. wheelchairs may not find this area as easy to maneuver, though.

Look over the rails of the bridges as you pass and see if you can catch a glimpse of fish, ducks or even a beaver! There is so much life just below the surface.

Read more: These playgrounds are a fabulous and free way to spend a day with your little one.

Do You Recognise This Tree Stump?

You will see a number of families enjoying Cherry Hill when you visit. It is a top destination in all weather because it’s free, stroller and wagon-friendly, and keeps kids engaged with animal signings and climbing. One of the best views, in my opinion, is the upturned tree complete with a wild spray of roots. We get a photo every time we visit!

Cherry Hill Gate provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This is an excellent way to spend time in the fresh air with your family.

Waterfalls, Hiking and More: Hilton Falls Conservation Area https://activeparents.ca/hilton-falls-conservation-area/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 22:10:51 +0000 https://activeparents.ca/?p=37939 Hilton Falls Conservation Area is a hidden gem! A stroller-friendly hike that includes up-close access to a waterfall and ruins to explore.

The post Waterfalls, Hiking and More: Hilton Falls Conservation Area appeared first on Active Parents.

]]>
Hilton Falls is one of the 8 Halton Conservation Areas and possibly our favourite. It’s less crowded than the more popular areas, and its amenities make it worth a visit (or two) every season. No matter when you visit Hilton Falls in Milton, Ontario you’ll get to experience a beautiful hike, a waterfall exploration and even ruins from long ago.

Hilton Falls Walkway

short walk to the falls

My family explored the yellow trail. This Hilton Falls trail is open and is the direct route to the falls themselves. The hiking trail is scenic, clean, safe, stroller-friendly and takes about 45 minutes to get to the falls. There are a few trails that take you off the direct route which are not stroller friendly – parts are very rocky and a lot have cliffs and drop-offs.

There are three bike trails consisting of everything from beginner level to very rocky and steep terrain. We did see quite a few older kids riding their bikes on the yellow trail.

There is a washroom in the Visitor Centre at the entrance to the park, and we passed a “rest house” along the yellow trail which was clean and had a place to clean your hands.

Hilton Falls Stream

Hilton Falls and The Mill Ruins

The waterfalls and Mill Ruins didn’t disappoint. Remember to bring your camera! They are located almost beside each other at the end of the hike. Hilton Falls Conservation Area and the falls are open year-round. You can also use these trails for mountain biking in the warm months and cross-country skiing when the snow comes.

There is a nice rest/eating area right before the falls with picnic tables. In the winter, this spot is home to a fire pit that you can warm up by, or roast your own marshmallows and hotdogs over!

You get to the falls via a staircase through the rocks. You are allowed to stand in the falls, which is refreshing on a hot summer day and a great photo op! When you visit in the winter months, you’ll be delighted if the waterfall freezes over. There is just something so magical about a frozen waterfall.

There are rocks that you can walk on that take you to a different part of the falls. We found it less busy here. If you or your kids like frogs or snakes, chances are you’ll see some here during the summer months. We did!

More About Hilton Falls Conservation Area

There is no playground at Hilton Falls Conservation Area, but my boys, who are 5 and 7, still had a great time. There are many places to stop along the way if someone needs a break or a drink. They have a few labelled rest areas, but some logs have been made into cute benches too.

Except for the falls, the hiking area is shaded by mature trees which is a nice reprieve from the summer sun. Fall colours make the canopy even more beautiful. When you visit Hilton Falls in the winter, the trails and snow-covered branches are definitely photo-worthy.

Features & Amenities:

  • Free parking (huge lot)
  • Picnic tables throughout
  • Renovated Visitor Centre with washrooms
  • “Rest House” (a fancy outhouse that my son said looked like a big pipe)
Staircase at Hilton Falls Conservation Area
Take the stairs down to the base of the waterfall

Notes from Sandra:

  • Bring water – there are no water stations
  • Some garbage cans, but they were only noticed at the main entrance and the entrance to the falls
  • Keep pets leashed

Hilton Falls Conservation Area is located at 4985 Campbellville Road in Milton. It is a part of Conservation Halton and is currently open from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm seven days a week. If you have a Conservation Halton Parks membership, it’s free. If you don’t, it’s $12 + HST for adults, $9.75 + HST for seniors, $8.75 + HST for children and free for those under 5. Reservations are recommended though not required.

What is Farm Crawl Hamilton, you ask? Farm Crawl is a self-directed event that provides public access to farms across Hamilton to learn about local agriculture, see operations and have a “genuine” farm experience. Your farm crawl ticket provides entry to all of the participating farms – you choose how many farms you would like to see and how much time to spend at each farm. It happens 3 times a year, so get your tickets today!

When is the event?

Farm Crawl dates are June 21, July 19, and September 13, 2025. Participating farms will be open from 10 am – 4 pm for visitors with tickets. Your ticket grants you access to all the farms on your event day(s).

  • Manorun Farm
  • Liberty Way Farm
  • Simpler Thyme
  • West Avenue Cider House
  • Rock Maple Lodge

How much does it cost?

Ticket fees go towards marketing, advertising and running the event. Purchase tickets online in advance or on the day of the event. Tickets cost $40 for a family. Individual tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for children. You can also get a season pass for $50. Be prepared to show your tickets upon entering each of the farms.

Is there anything else I should know?

Farm Crawl runs rain or shine. Please leave your pets at home. There is no shuttle bus between the farms, and you should budget about 10-30 minutes drive time between farms.

Spend the day outdoors learning from local farmers about where our food comes from and return home with healthy and organic ingredients for a yummy meal to feed to your family!

Updated for 2025

There are so many beautiful beaches in Hamilton and Burlington! Most are free or cost a small fee to visit for the day. You can’t go wrong with a trip to the beach near Hamilton or the surrounding area. They are close by, and each offers something a little different from the other.

We’ve gathered information on the best beaches near Burlington, Hamilton and Niagara to help you plan a beach day to remember.

Notice: Some beaches close when the water isn’t safe for swimming. Further down in this list, you’ll find links to water safety resources.

More Fun In The Water:

Burlington Beach

Address: 1100 Lakeshore Rd, Burlington, ON L7S 1A7 | website

My favourite thing about Burlington Beach is its proximity to my home! This is one of the most popular beaches near me, and we spend a lot of time here every season. This spot is a popular destination, so expect crowds on hot days.

Burlington Beach has a sandy shore and shallow water. You can walk far into the lake and the water won’t go higher than 4 feet.

Plan for a full day at Burlington Beach because they have washrooms, outdoor showers, a snack bar and a playground, too. With its popularity, parking can be difficult. Arrive early to get a parking spot, and if possible visit on a weekday.

You can find the parking prices and restrictions here.

Christie Lake Conservation Area

Address: 1000 Hwy 5, Dundas, ON L9H 5E2 | website

Christie Lake has a 360-metre-long sandy beach and is a great location to enjoy the sun! Build sandcastles, get some tanning done and relish the views of the conservation area. As far as local beaches go, this one is just a stone’s throw away!

Our readers rate this as one of the best beaches in Hamilton, especially for canoeing and paddle boarding. Extend your visit and play some disc golf.

No reservations are required. Watch their X (Twitter) page for real-time capacity updates. Hamilton Conservation will close access and parking when they reach capacity. Admission to the conservation area is required. Fees are: Per 1 vehicle and driver: $16.50, Per passenger over 5 years of age: $5.50, Walk/bike in: $5.50.

Kelso Beach

Did you know we had such a great beach so close to home? Kelso Beach has a lake for swimming, camping, picnics, canoe rentals, and stand-up paddle boarding. There is a lifeguard on duty.

Reservations are not required but are recommended. Kelso Beach is part of a 35-hectare lake. Lots of room to play with kids, put chairs on the beach, sunbathe, and play volleyball. After your swim, grab a snack at the beach concession stand.

While you’re here, you can also take a stroll along the boardwalk, try a boat rental, or go fishing.

Pricing: Adults $12.00 +HST, Seniors $9.75 +HST, Kids 5-14 $8.75 +HST, Kids under 5 are free. Reservations are suggested but are not required. You can save $1.50 per person by making a reservation and paying your gate fees online before you visit.

Emerald Lake

Address: 7248 Gore Rd, Puslinch, ON N0B 2J0 | website

Emerald Lake is a local favourite and our readers thought it was one of the best beaches near Hamilton! It has everything you could want for a day at the beach – and then some! This RV resort and water park is a popular destination for families because of its numerous amenities.

At Emerald Lake, you can enjoy the 5-acre spring-fed lake and the 5-acre spring-fed quarry. The quarry has a water park including a trampoline, a rock climbing wall, obstacle course, catapult, and more. You’ll also have access to the 2′ deep kiddie pool, the 200′ water slide, their 3,400-square-foot rubber surfaced splash pad, beach volleyball courts and a basketball court. Additionally, there is a snack bar and life jacket rentals on site.

Families of all ages rank this as one of their favourite beaches near Hamilton.

Pricing:

  • Ages 3 & under are free
  • (Weekdays) $25 + HST (ages 4 – 64)
  • (Weekends) $30 + HST (ages 4 – 64)
  • (Seniors – Everyday) $15 + tax

Some notes from Emerald Lake’s website: No reservations necessary to visit the waterpark for the day. We do have lifeguards on duty, but it is your responsibility as parents to watch your children. Life jackets are mandatory for all persons using water toys and in water toys area as well as no one under the age of 12 is permitted to go to the water park without adult supervision.

Lakeside Park Beach, Port Dalhousie

Address: 1 Lakeport Rd, St. Catharines, ON, L2N 5B3 | website

This has always been one of our favourite beaches near Burlington and Hamilton. The shallow Lake Ontario water is great for younger kids to play in. The sand was warm and perfect for castle building and beach volleyball. They also have a snack bar in case you forget drinks. The beach itself is free to access, but you do need to pay for parking in the lot.

But possibly the best feature is the working antique carousel at Lakeside Park Beach in Port Dalhousie. It’s over 100 years old and each ride is only 25 cents! This is a staple on the ActiveParents summer bucket list!

Valens Conservation Area

Address: 1691 Regional 97 Rd, Cambridge, ON N1R 5S7 | website

Valens is another one of the Hamilton beaches that has glowing reviews from seasoned campers. Readers raved to us about the facilities and cleanliness. I love the swimming area at Valens. We go multiple times throughout the summer.

Spend the day, or camp overnight, rent a canoe and unwind with the family.

No reservations are required. If the beach reaches capacity, Hamilton Conservation will close the parking lot and beach access. Watch their X (Twitter) page for real-time capacity updates. Admission to the conservation area is required. Fees are: Per 1 vehicle and driver: $16.50, Per passenger over 5 years of age: $5.50, Walk/bike in: $5.50.

Bay Beach – also known as Crystal Beach

The beautiful, clear waters are where Crystal Beach in Fort Erie got its name. The waters are ideal for canoeing and kayaking, some stand-up paddle-boarding, and swimming. Washrooms and change rooms are available for your convenience. Please leave your pets at home, they are not permitted on the beach.

Non-Residents can purchase a day pass to visit Crystal Beach. When you visit on a weekday, passes are $5 per person. When you visit on a holiday or Friday through Saturday, passes are $10 per person. Children 12 years and under are free.

Turkey Point

Address: 194 Turkey Point Rd, Turkey Point, N0E 1T0 | website

Not exactly one of the beaches near Burlington, but this one comes highly recommended so we added it. Turkey Point is an Ontario Provincial Park and it’s open May 2, 2025 to October 26, 2025. It is a 2km wide beach boasting beautiful sand and ideal conditions for busy families. Turkey Point doesn’t have lifeguards on duty.

Life jackets are available to rent, and both paid and free parking are available close to the beach.

Long Point

Address: 350 Erie Blvd, Port Rowan, ON N0E 1M0 | website

Long Point is another Provincial Park that we highly recommend. I think it’s one of the best beaches near Burlington. Lots of families raved about it and we finally made it there last summer.

The beach is massive and clean, and the Lake Erie water was great. The parking lot fills up quickly, and people come and go all day long. Street parking is also available in various locations. I took this photo below when we were there, and although it looks busy, there was a ton of space. We didn’t have anyone within 10 feet of us the whole time.

I love how a few hours in the fresh air wears children out. These Halton and Hamilton hiking trails are the perfect inexpensive way to spend a morning. Soak up some vitamin D and enjoy the calmness that nature brings. Any excuse to get outdoors is a great excuse! Our family has always loved exploring hiking trails and these are our top recommendations for families.

The Best Hamilton Hiking Trails For Families

Eramosa Karst

Upper Mt Albion Rd, Stoney Creek | website | $10 per vehicle to park.

Part of the Hamilton Conservation group of areas, Eramosa Karst is one of the best hiking trails near me. I had never heard of it before, and attendance never seems to max out. Once I saw pictures of it I knew I had to plan a visit.

A “karst” is a landscape formed by dissolving rocks like limestone, creating things like sinkholes, caves, and underground rivers.

In addition to the karsts, the walking trails are ideal for any age and are stroller-friendly. There is a HUGE old tree that has split in three and provides great climbing. Be sure to take a few minutes to check out the natural spring and the views from the bench.

Hiking at Eramosa Karst
Eramosa Karst is our favourite walk because kids really move their bodies here!

Dundas Valley Conservation Area

650 Governors Road, Dundas | website | $10 per vehicle

Hamilton is home to some of the best hiking trails in Ontario. This trail is a favourite for our family because there is so much to see along the way. The trees offer a ton of shade. I’m certain the temperatures were at least 5 degrees cooler in their shady canopy.

The trail is smooth ground for the most part, and I saw some families easily pushing their strollers. Along the main loop, you’ll come across the replica of a Victorian railway station that serves as the area’s Trail Centre. It’s also home to washrooms.

Adjacent to it is a piece of the old Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo Railway track, with a 1929 executive coach car and a 1931 baggage car. Both were donated by the Canadian Pacific Railway. We love catching equestrians riding horseback through the woods. If you have a dog, they are welcome as long as they stay on a leash.

Streams caught our attention as we made our way to the Hermitage Ruins. The magnificent stone mansion was built in 1855 by George Gordon Browne Leith, an immigrant from Scotland. The bricks used in its building originated from the Dundas Valley clay; limestone was quarried at the Credit River valley.

The Hermitage burned down in 1934. After that, Leith’s daughter built a much smaller house among the ruins and lived there until her death in 1942. The ruins have been reinforced using wooden braces to prevent further wear. Hopefully, they will be intact for years to come.

Trains are just one of the many sights to see while exploring Dundas Valley Conservation Area

Chedoke Radial Trail

120 Beddoe Dr, Hamilton, ON L8P 4Z4 | website | free admission, pay to park

Chedoke Radial Trail was another new trail for us. The trail itself is smooth ground and stroller-friendly. We went at about 11:00 am and the trail was a mix of shade and sun.

The enormous rock wall is awe-inspiring when you think of its size. The incline is roughly 200 meters and the views at the top are beautiful. There are those famous stairs, but zero chance I’m walking up 240+ steps if I don’t have to!

There were a few waterfalls that have a current/flow that fluctuates based on the current rain conditions. One waterfall, when rushing after a rainfall, pours down onto the 403!

Kids will enjoy climbing and balancing. Families of all ages were also enjoying the walk. We parked at the Chedoke Golf Course on a Sunday. The lot was busy with other families and golfers. I am pleased to report that their washrooms were open.

The Best Halton Hiking Trails For Families

Hilton Falls Conservation Area

4985 Campbellville Rd, Burlington | website | $10 for adults, $7 for kids, $6 for seniors, kids under 5 free.

This Halton Conservation Area hiking trail is another hidden gem that was new to us. It’s a little more out of the city centre, so I expected it to be a bit less crowded, and it was.

Hilton Falls is a great spot for hiking with kids. The terrain is rocky and rooty which makes it challenging for them. Ideal for balancing and working those large muscles! Parents were manoeuvring their strollers, but some parts were a little challenging. If you have a dog, they are welcome as long as they stay on a leash.

The waterfalls and ruins are picture-worthy and the rock formations are impressive. Gather at the fire pit by the waterfall with your hotdogs or marshmallows to cook over the fire! Ideally, visit in the fall so you can see a rushing waterfall. Keep your eyes peeled for bugs, frogs, snakes and small fish.

Feeling adventurous? You can mountain bike the trails in the nice weather, or cross-country ski in the winter. I really do love these all-season Conservation Halton hiking trails in Ontario.

Hilton Falls is a great hike with multiple trails, a waterfall, ruins and even a campfire in the winter

Bronte Creek Provincial Park

1219 Burloak Drive, Oakville | website | $21 per vehicle

We love the various hiking trails near me at Bronte Creek. Trails start at the parking lot and, ranging in length from 1 km to almost 3 km, wind along the top of Bronte Creek (always be careful when hiking and biking!) to cover all of the grounds. Bronte has a great leash-free section of the park as well.

Stroll through the forest and along a stream, where, in fall, you can fish for trout and salmon, among other fish. Remind kids to look for frogs, small snakes and bugs and also the Bronte Creek cows are always grazing in the fields.

Follow the signs for the Gnome Trail and wander down a shaded path to the cutest community of painted gnome homes you ever did see. Bring a frisbee and play some disc golf. With a wheelchair and stroller-accessible trail, this is truly a family-friendly destination sure to please everyone.

Bronte Creek is home to multiple trails like this one.

Crawford Lake, Halton Conservation

3115 Conservation Road, Milton | website | $10 for adults, $7 for kids, $6 for seniors, kids under 5 free.

Crawford Lake is one of the most popular Conservation Halton hiking trails and for good reason! It is as full of great history as it is full of hiking trails. No matter what season you visit, you’re sure to love your experience.

Visit the reconstructed 15th-century Iroquoian village. The excavation between 1973 and 1987 uncovered 11 longhouses on the site and over 10 000 artifacts from the day-to-day lives of the Iroquoian people who once lived in the village. Three longhouses have been rebuilt to match archaeological findings.

Explore the village and learn about what daily life was like over 600 years ago through hands-on programs including simulated digs and fire-starting demonstrations. The Deer Clan Longhouse features exhibits that explore Indigenous art and culture.

After you’ve visited the Longhouse Village, walk the trail around Crawford Lake’s unique meromictic lake. With the boardwalk wrapping around the lake, Crawford Lake offers 5 great hikes for any season, ranging in length from 2 km to over 7 km. The boardwalk is stroller-friendly.

Learn about species at risk as you follow along with the Hide and Seek Trail and view the enormous wooden carvings. The Hide and Seek Trail is located along the blue Crawford Lake Trail as you head toward the lake.

The “Hide and Seek” trail at Crawford Lake is home to lots of hand-carved wooden sculptures like this one.

Cherry Hill Gate, Royal Botanical Gardens

680 Plains Rd W, Burlington | website | free admission, paid parking lot.

When I think of hiking trails near me, Cherry Hill Gate is what comes to mind immediately. It’s on the border-ish of Burlington and Hamilton and owned by Royal Botanical Gardens. The trail is relatively smooth and stroller-friendly. The entrance takes you down a steep-ish hill, so if it’s wet out, be warned that it could be slippery.

Once you’ve made it down, keep your eyes peeled for the huge upturned tree stump and a ton of chipmunks. As you walk the trail, be on the lookout for beavers, swans, turtles, snakes, spiders, and a variety of birds.

Much of the trail is a wooden boardwalk so very walkable. Shade is scarce along the boardwalk so go in the mornings or evenings to beat the heat. For years this was our favourite location for hiking with kids in Hamilton and Halton. It’s easy terrain and lots for them to see and do.

Cherry Hill Gate is a favourite spot for young families

Cootes Paradise Trails at RBG

You can access a variety of trails around the Cootes Paradise Marsh, and each has something fabulous to offer. We love the area near the Hamilton Aviary (Caleb’s Walk, Ravine Road Trail with its packed gravel trail. Download the Cootes Paradise trail map here and you can expand your walk as long as you’d like! Paid parking is available at various spots around Cootes Paradise.

Joe Sam’s Park

752 Centre Rd, Hamilton | free

One winter day we visited Joe Sam’s Park in Waterdown and we were impressed! We initially went for the excellent walking paths that take you through forests, over marshes and beside wetlands. The path was smooth and very stroller-friendly. The trail was wide, and ideal for wagons, smaller bikes and toddler exploring.

I cannot recommend this winter outing enough, especially to parents of young kids who need fresh air. There is also a playground right at the parking lot to entertain you before and/or after your walk. The loop is a nice size, it took us about 1.5 hours to complete, with lots of stopping for photos and exploring.

Tips for Successful Hiking with Kids

  • Bring water. I know it should be a given, but we have been known to forget, too!
  • Bring snacks, too. No one wants to get hangry.
  • If you’re going during spring and summer, bring bug repellent and sunscreen.
  • Make sure everyone has comfy shoes. Flip-flops need not apply.
  • If you want a little one to wander free, choose a location that isn’t a popular mountain biking location.
  • Choose a less popular spot and discover a hidden gem.

These are my favourite Halton and Hamilton hiking trails near me. I hope you visit one soon with your family. If you have a suggestion for more hiking trails, please tell me! We love sharing new Hamilton hiking trails and Halton hiking trails with our readers.

Waterdown Memorial Park is filled with natural beauty and great amenities for families. Read on to find out why we love visiting this park among other family friendly Hamilton locations.

What Drew Us to Waterdown Memorial Park?

The skatepark of course! If you’ve been following along on our Instastories, you’ll see that almost every single day we visit a skate park. My kids have become scootering fanatics, and this is one way to get fresh air and be together. Who can say no to that?!

The skatepark is pretty awesome. Its paint job alone makes it a fun place to be for every age. It’s all drop-ins and bowls (that’s skater “speak”) and kids who like to glide and roll over hills will love it. The park is used by everyone: skateboarders, scooter kids, trick bikers, and they’re all ages. I saw dads who were putting on a show for their kids, and teens who were helping little ones learn the skate park etiquette and wee ones who were decked out in all of their safety gear. It’s a great gathering of skills and demographics.

Playground and Splash Pad

Jump in the spray pad to cool down after skate boarding. You won’t regret it. Little ones love the sprinklers and misters. The surface is concrete and parts are rubberized concrete. It’s a small, but great addition to the park.

waterdown memorial park splash pad

I couldn’t figure out if the playground was a circus motif or a rocket ship theme, but it was lots of fun either way. Your kids will love all of the climbers. My girls loved the incline ramp that you needed to pull yourself up. Lots of upper body muscles working there! We visited on a warm Saturday in August and I was surprised that it wasn’t busy. This park had something for everyone of every age, and because of that, we will definitely be back.

Lots of Room For Sports and More

Bring your sports equipment because there are 3 baseball diamonds and a ton of grass space to kick and throw and catch. Bring a kite to fly in the sports fields where there are no trees to get in the way. If your kiddos aren’t comfortable using the skatepark, there is a verrrrrry long loop around the middle of the grounds that is smooth and perfect for gliding. Anything with wheels is perfect to use on it. In the winter, part of the loop is flooded and frozen and becomes a free ice skating rink!

The park is very easy to get to from any direction because it’s on a main street and provides a ton of parking. I drive a truck, so I’m a stickler for places with proper and sufficient parking.

Waterdown Memorial Park Playground Features and Amenities

  • 3 baseball diamonds
  • mature trees for shade
  • large, covered gazebo
  • small splash pad with misters and sprinklers
  • wide-open field space for sports, kites, running and more
  • 5+ park benches facing the playground

Oakville‘s Coronation Park is a beautiful park situated on the shore of Lake Ontario. It’s 23+ acres of beauty, and it’s an ideal destination for your next day trip.

No matter the season, Coronation Park is beautiful. It offers beautiful views of Lake Ontario and a variety of ways to stay active and outdoors with your kids. Located between Third Line and Fourth Line and offering 200+ parking spots, this park is a popular spot on weekends in the summer.

Two Playgrounds for Double the Fun!

Coronation Park is home to two playgrounds, each catering to different ages. The smaller playground looks like a treehouse village and has equipment that lets little ones safely climb, crawl and explore at their own pace and at appropriate heights. 2 slides, 3 baby swings and 1 special needs swing, climbers and imaginative play make this park a favourite for the under 5 kiddos.

The second park at Coronation Park is perfect for your climbers! The playground structure offers a variety of ways to climb up and 5 ways to slide down. And once they make their way to the top there are 4 slides for them to zoom down. There are also swings and 3 large, separate rock climbing walls.

As of April 2025, construction has begun on two brand new playgrounds at Coronation Park in Oakville! The new play structures are expected to be ready for Summer 2025. We checked out the new playground renderings here, and wow! This park is in for a huge facelift.

The new big kid playground will be fully accessible and inclusive with rubberized surfacing, while the junior area will remain with woodchip ground cover, with plans to upgrade in the future. The two new parks will have a really engaging array of new features, such as a universal carousel, zip-line, swing set, fairy tale seesaw, spinner bowls, suspended nest, non-verbal communication board, sensory dome with ropes and more! It will also feature a gondola; a wheelchair-accessible ride for groups that counts on teamwork to create a gentle sway back and forth!

We can’t wait to check out these new playgrounds at Coronation Park in Oakville this summer! In the meantime, the splash pad and other park amenities highlighted below will remain open, likely minus a few parking spots! The perfect outing for any construction truck loving kiddos to go watch the big machines in action!

Coronation Park Splash Pad

This just might be the coolest splash pad we’ve been to this summer. With it’s regal them and super-sized crown that dumps a TON of water, it’s as fun to watch as it is to play in. There are lots of interactive ways to play at this spray pad like directing the trupmets or shields that shoot water. Coronation Park splash pad also features a little misting/low-pressure spray zone for the little ones. Just sitting around the splash pad keeps you cool because the mist floats over.

As you can tell from the pictures, there are lots of shady spots at Coronation Park, even on the playground itself.

Nestled behind a stone wall and manicured shrubbery sits Paletta Mansion, at Paletta Lakefront Park in Burlington. The grounds make for a peaceful place to stroll, and the mansion is ideal for the specialist of occasions. Come with us on a mini tour of Paletta Lakefront Park.

Explore more! Enjoy local playgrounds and park spaces or find a hiking trail that is easy on the knees.

Visit Paletta Mansion

Paletta Mansion has beautifully maintained grounds with views of Lake Ontario. This estate home may be rented for special events like weddings, retirements and birthday parties. The 11,000-square-foot mansion has a Great Room and the Carmine Room. Tour the stone Verandah, Sunroom, Library and Burlington Foundation Room while you are here.

Spend The Day At Paletta Lakefront Park

Paletta Lakefront Park is a small, beautiful park along Lakeshore Road in Burlington. Stroll the gentle Discovery Walk and bridge through Burlington’s Paletta Lakefront Park. Bring the family to explore the short trail, bridge, break wall, and spectacular waterfront view. The family dog is invited, too, on a leash of course.

Visitors slow down and smell the flowers and watch the ducks swim in the lake. Stay a little later and you will see a beautiful sunset. Take a photo beside Lake Ontario. Paletta Park is a very popular location for local photographers in the spring and summer months. Bring a book, sip a coffee, or have a picnic. Sit on the lush lawns that overlook the Lake, bring a blanket or lawn chairs, or sit on the benches provided, any time of day.

No matter the season, I always recommend a visit to this park. Access is free and so is the parking, and public restrooms are available. During peak wedding season, the Paletta Mansion lot may be full of wedding guests.

Play At The Doll House

In addition to the Mansion itself, the outbuildings included a stable and a Doll House believed to have been built as a playhouse for Dorothy, the daughter of the original owners. The Doll House was on the original drawings from 1930 and is thought to be the oldest heritage playhouse in Burlington. Look for it as you wander the pathway.

A Bit of History

At one point, in 1809, the site that the Paletta Mansion sits on was granted to Laura Secord, and the park is now bordered to the east by Secord Lane. The property was later owned by numerous different families and by 1912 it was used as a fruit farm and as a park by the locals for boating, fishing, and swimming. Edythe Merriam MacKay, daughter of the founder of the Canadian Steel Company, Cyrus Albert Birge, had the home designed and built in the 1930s. Edythe’s daughter Dorothy and her husband used the home, then called Shoreacres Estate, as a summer residence.

The Estate was left to Dorothy’s five children and later purchased by the City of Burlington. Learn more about the history of the Paletta Mansion, the City of Burlington maintains a website full of historical and architectural details.

Have you been to Stratford, Ontario? I hadn’t been in years, so when a friend inspired me to visit again, I did. I took the kids on the road and we spent the day in this adorable small town. Here’s what we did.

Why Stratford?

Stratford wasn’t foreign to me. My uncle lived in Stratford for many years, so as a kid I visited often and knew it was somewhere I’d want to take my kids to visit. We also watched an episode of The Amazing Race Canada take place there and knew we had to add it to our day trip list! You can truly find inspiration anywhere!

Things To Do in Stratford Ontario

Stratford’s Small Town Charm

Stratford is one of the most picturesque downtowns I’ve seen in a very long time. The buildings are so well maintained you’d think you were on a movie set. I couldn’t help but take so many photos of the beautiful architecture. It’s so fantastic to see a city that has maintained its charm for so long.

The drive was about 90 minutes from Burlington, and quite easy, especially for the directionally challenged like me. The downtown core offered lots of parking, and because it’s compact, we parked and walked to all of the destinations we had on our must-see list.

Things to do in Stratford, Ontario

Our first stop was for lunch. We knew we wanted to eat local (no chain restaurants when we are day-tripping!) so we started to wander and stumbled up The Alley Cat Cat Cafe. Seriously! A Cat Cafe! We are cat people so we had to check it out. Their menu was the essentials of home cooking and we all really enjoyed it. Try the fresh-squeezed lemonade!

Once we finished lunch, it was our time to visit the cats! Walk-ins are welcome if there is space, but if you want to ensure you get to spend time with furry friends it’s best to reserve your spot. There were 8 resident cats and 2 who were adoptable. The Alley Cat Cafe has had great success with fostering cats until they are adopted, and the entrance fee ($10.50 per person, per hour) goes to support the cats. We recently lost our family cat when he was 17 years old, so petting and playing with cats was a much-needed activity for us all.

Things To Do in Stratford Ontario

Float Along the Avon River

After we got our cat fix, we headed to the Avon River to rent a paddle boat and paddle around the water. For a 1-hour paddle boat rental, it was $30.00 and all three of us fit on one. They also rent canoes, kayaks and bicycles. Rental info here. As we floated along the Avon River, we were treated to live music being performed on a floating and moving stage. You can also buy a small paper bag of food for the ducks, swans and geese to feed them while you’re floating. Be prepared for some “passionate” eaters though!

Things To Do in Stratford Ontario

Treat Yourself in Stratford, Ontario

The paddleboat ride helped us work up an appetite, so we wandered the area more and did some window shopping before we strolled past 2 beautiful chocolate shops! In the first, Rheo Thompson Candies, we picked up some delicious peanut brittle and mint chocolates for my mother-in-law’s birthday. And just a short wander away we stopped at Chocolate Barr’s Candies and had not only a wonderful shopping experience but some decadent treats, too! As we were paying for our goodies, we were the only ones in the store and the chocolatier took the time to explain to my kids the differences between ice cream, gelato, and sorbet. That is a question they’ve been asking me all summer!

Things To Do in Stratford Ontario

Other great reasons to visit Stratford, Ontario

We planned for a short day in Stratford, but we are already scheduling our next visit. There is so much to do and see. When chatting with our readers and friends, they suggested we make time to eat at Raja Indian Cuisine. They have the most beautiful patio I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait to go back for dinner. You can also rent bicycles to roll through town and along the riverfront. Such a great idea for next time. Plus, there are so many quaint bed and breakfasts to welcome you, and the ever-so-popular Chocolate Trail!

I hope you enjoyed reading about some things to do in Stratford, Ontario this weekend – and I hope you visit soon! I’d love to hear where you visit and what you do.

If you prefer craft beer, we recommend these breweries.

Burlington’s own Nickel Brook Brewery has beer, cocktails, root beer and ginger beer. They have a tap room in Etobicoke too.

Newark Brewery has a great selection of food and Canadian-made beers with a European flair. Visit any day, or make a special trip for one of their trivia nights.

Teach one of your favourite pastimes to your partner when you take them like hiking, fishing, footgolf, or an indoor bowling date.

Need a great idea for a winter day date? Hit the hills for some exhilarating snow tubing. We know the best local hills, and some even let you go tandem. Very romantic. How about an evening on the ice? These local outdoor ice skating rinks are perfect for just that.

The Intercounty Baseball League has teams across the region. Baseball season opens in May and runs through the end of August. The league is made up of 9 teams from southern Ontario, with special mention to the Hamilton Cardinals, Kitchener Panthers, Guelph Royals, and Brantford Red Sox.

The Niagara River Lions are our local Canadian Elite Basketball League Team and let me tell you the games and talent are next level! The CEBL consists of 10 teams across Canada.

You can never go wrong when you catch a Hamilton Ticats football game at Tim Horton’s Field (aka Ivor Wynn Stadium iykyk).

Ride the GO train to Exhibition Place and cheer for TFC (Toronto Football Club) at BMO Field. Go Reds!

And who would we be without a plethora of hockey games to choose from? Hamilton Bulldogs, Niagara IceDogs, Guelph Storm and Kitchener Rangers all play close by, and go head-to-head in Ontario Hockey League (OHL) on-ice action.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park in Oakville is just one of the 340 Ontario Parks. We visit multiple times a year in every season because there’s always something fantastic to do at Bronte Creek. Here are some highlights of what you can expect when you visit. If you enjoy this park and playground you’ll want to explore these playgrounds too.

The Children’s Play Barn

Your admission to the day use area includes unlimited play at the play barn. Kids will love that they get to run, jump, swing and slide inside a real barn. Open spring, summer and fall.

Springtime on the Farm

Bronte Creek is home to many animals including cows, goats, chickens, peacocks, sheep, rabbits and more! There are animals around throughout most seasons. Visit in the spring when you can meet baby animals that were born earlier that year.

Most animal experiences are open in spring, summer and fall.

Harvest and Winter Festivals

Visit the Spruce Lane Farmhouse on the fourth weekend in September for the Harvest Festival. Pick up a pumpkin and enjoy yummy snacks like kettle corn and freshly pressed cider. Fall is a great time to visit the animals and take a wagon ride over to the play barn.

Winter at Bronte Creek brings on the Victorian Christmas preparations, games and food of the festive season. Enjoy crafts, stories, treats and games. It’s certain to get you into the spirit of the season.

Check out the Friends of Bronte Creek website to see if there are any special events happening.

Walk The Gnome Road

The Gnome Road is a great reason to visit. It’s home to little wooden houses decorated like gnome homes. Follow along a very stroller-friendly walking path just at the tree line near the play barn and yellow playground.

There is a good tree canopy as well, so some shade for anyone who needs a break. Open all year.

The gnome road at bronte creek

Bronte Creek Swimming Pool Closed

Bronte Creek Pool has been a family favourite for years because of its size and beach entry. The park has confirmed that it will remain closed for now. Personally I don’t see it reopening anytime soon, unfortunately.

See The Salmon Run – Don’t Miss This!

Fall is the time of year when the salmon migration runs through Bronte Creek Park. We first saw them in 2020, and it was honestly magical. Nature controls the migration, so there is no specific time to see them. They generally make their way to spawning grounds in September/October.

Directions to a viewing area. Park in Lot F, and walk toward Spruce Lane Farm. Behind the barns and the cow pasture, there is a trail marker for the Half Moon Valley Trail. When you get to a fork in the trail, go left, which is trail 4.

Tip: Bring appropriate footwear and a camera. Note that this trail has stairs.

Bronte Creek Animals

When we visited in the fall, we thought the barns we all empty for the season. We were pleasantly surprised to see the cows were out and so were these massive rabbits!

Bronte Creek Park rabbits and animals

The Old Oak Tree

We read about the great White Oak tree, which started growing in 1685. I was surprised to learn it is one of the biggest oak trees in Ontario.

So Many Playgrounds!

Kids will have fun at the playgrounds and play structures as you make your way through the park.

Easy Walking Trails

Bronte has stroller-friendly trails that are easy for kids. You can walk by the creek, among the tall trees, or on the gravel paths that go all around the park.

While you’re walking at this Oakville Park, look for the unusual cylindrical buildings and picnic shelters with real wood-burning fireplaces and sinks. Lots of opportunities for using your imaginations, and a ton of green space to run off all that energy kids have.

Tip: Bring lunch or dinner and have a picnic.

Even More Reasons To Love bronte Creek

Bronte is a park that offers educational programs like the Maple Syrup Festival, Ghost Walks, Camper Halloween, and Victorian Christmas. It’s a popular destination for classes and families looking for interactive experiences throughout the year.

Bring your furry friend and let them enjoy a little fresh air freedom at the dedicated leash-free section of the park.

Disc golf is a challenging and fun activity in nice weather. Bring your own frisbees, stand at the marker, and throw. Your goal is to land your disk in or as close as possible to the hole. Perfect for some fresh air fun, and no experience necessary.

Come in the winter months and enjoy cross-country skiing and tobogganing with the family.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park camping is easy and ideal for first-timers because if things don’t go as planned, you’re not far from home. I know many families who have gotten their “camping legs” at Bronte. You can tent or RV camp from May through October, or stay at one of the park’s yurts. For camping fees check here.

Tips for Your Visit

Comfort stations include washroom facilities with flush toilets and handwashing facilities. They are near the Playbarn, Spruce Lane Farmhouse and various points around the park.

You can hike and bike on the trails.

Bring your binoculars because we permit and encourage bird watching.

Bronte has picnic benches all throughout the park, so pack a picnic or snack spread and dine al fresco.

Admission and Park Memberships

Bronte Creek Provincial Park offers a variety of price deals and discounts. Prices vary for everything from walk-in day use to RV camping. You can find them all here on their official website.

Hamilton’s Buncrana Golf Course is now home to a footgolf course and it looks like a blast!

Buncrana Golf Course is located in Hamilton and is home to a 12-hole golf course and now an 18-hole footgolf course! If you’re like me, you’re probably asking yourself what is footgolf? It was new to me, too! When I heard about it, I did some research. As it turns out, this is just what it sounds like – a golf course with holes big enough to sink a soccer ball in!

Foot golf rules are similar to golf rules: you kick a soccer ball around a course and try to sink your ball in as few shots as possible.

Looking for mini golf courses near you? Click here!

Buncrana has foot golf, disc golf and golf. Find more disc golf courses here.

What is footgolf?

Footgolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. The game is played with a soccer ball at a Hamilton golf course facility. The goal of the game is to kick your soccer ball into a specially designed 21-inch diameter hole (on the sides of the greens, fairways, or in the rough) in the least amount of strokes. (from Buncrana’s website)

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need to have my own soccer ball?
Each player is required to have their own ball. Don’t have one? No problem. They rent soccer balls for $3.

How long does it take to play 18 holes of footgolf?
Depending on the size of your group and your skill level, it may take as little as 1 to 2 hours to play the course.

When can I play foot golf at Buncrana?
Footgolf reservations can be booked for Sundays after 3 pm or Mondays anytime.

How much is a round of footgolf?
Prices are $15 for juniors (under 12) and $22 for adults (12 years and up). You can book a tee time for 4 players on their website.

A great friend recommended we visit Heritage Green sports complex in Stoney Creek and boy are we glad they did! Here’s why we think you should plan a visit next time you’re in Hamilton!

We Loved Heritage Green Sports Park

It’s not hard to get my kids to go to a park, and it’s so simple when I tell them there’s a zipline! Ziplines are so exhilarating for kids of all ages. Heritage Green Sports Park’s playground has a double zipline, one regular one and one special needs swing chair zipline – this is the first one I’ve ever seen! My kids tried them both out – naturally – and they’re both so exciting!

Looking for the best playgrounds worth visiting? Read all of our reviews here.

heritage green sports park playground zipline

The entire playground was filled with play gear that I had never seen before. A mini ropes course and a rope climbing pyramid are great for kids who love to climb and swing and use their imagination. Their height makes them perfect for big kids and little ones. The rope pyramid spins if you’ve got some muscle, but doesn’t spin fast enough to be scary or dangerous.

Challenging Climbers

My kids were surprised that this park didn’t have any slides, but they would gladly swap sliding for climbing, so slides weren’t missed at all. The standard and baby swings were fun, but my kids absolutely loved the hammock swing the most! Such a unique piece of equipment and the kids at the park were using it in a variety of ways. Heritage Green Park really stimulated their imaginations!

Splash Pad and Sports Fields, Too

We were there on a day that was a cool 14 degrees out and the splash pad was still on, so if you’re up for a challenge, feel free to bring your swimsuit. On a hot summer day, these water jets and tipping buckets will make for a great splash pad and park visit. Bring some snacks or a picnic and eat at the tables.

The many athletic fields use a majority of the space at Heritage Green Sports Park it’s home to. They’re new and beautiful, and already well-appreciated by the soccer and baseball players.

Visiting lavender farms like these can be a relaxing and photographic summer outing for your family. Spend some quality time together surrounded by fields of lavender in every shade of purple and violet blue. Go for a walk where the lavender grows, have a picnic, snap some photos, and treat yourself to some honey lavender ice cream. Depending on the species of lavender, the best time to visit lavender farms will be late June to early August.

Our list includes Halton and Niagara Falls area farms that offer pick-your-own and pre-picked varieties. Many farms have found creative ways to make natural products using these light and dark purple flowers. Enjoy infused honey and preserves, candles, baked goods and more. I feel so lucky to live near Niagara wine country because it makes the ideal growing home for mostly drought-tolerant lavender. Enjoy your visit, and treat yourself to something beautiful while you’re there.

How To Get Scholarships in Canada https://activeparents.ca/how-to-get-scholarships-in-canada/ Fri, 06 Jun 2025 13:08:18 +0000 https://activeparents.ca/?p=56747 Discover a wealth of educational opportunities in Canada through scholarships. Learn about eligibility criteria, application processes, and funding sources for pursuing your academic future.

The post How To Get Scholarships in Canada appeared first on Active Parents.

]]>

Scholarships: we think of them as all-or-nothing. Either you’re the star quarterback going to Penn State on a football scholarship, or you’re a top-of-the-class brainiac on a full ride to Harvard. The reality is more mundane, especially when we think about scholarships in Canada. First, let’s define some terms:

Scholarship: a generic catch-all standing in for “money for education.” More specifically, scholarships are awarded based on grades and other achievements.

Bursary: like a scholarship, but offered on the basis of financial need.

Award: another generic term. Specifically, a one-time payment for an accomplishment, like being this year’s top student in the Philosophy department.

“Renewable” scholarships: awards that continue to offer funding year-in, year-out, so long as you continue to qualify.

“Automatic consideration”: an award that doesn’t require a direct application. You’ll be considered for the scholarship when you apply to the school that offers it.

“Entrance” scholarship: an award for new students, typically straight out of high school. Usually based on grades, and may be renewable.

What do I need to know about scholarship programs in Canada?

Canada has relatively few “full-ride” or “fully-funded” scholarships, and even fewer athletic scholarships. Sports scholarships are far more common in the USA. Large scholarships do exist — see, for example, the Loran Scholars or the Schulich Leaders — but most programs will be in the $2,000-$5,000 range. This means students should apply to multiple scholarships throughout the year, in an effort to gather as many smaller awards as possible.

There’s no real scholarship “season” either. We see spikes in deadlines around October and April, but deadlines happen year-round. More and more, we’re seeing programs move into the summer months, to give students more opportunity to apply when not focused on school. So, you’ve got to be vigilant throughout the year in order to catch the interesting scholarships.

How do I find scholarships in Canada?

Here are a few sources to try. It never hurts to check back in once in a while to see what might be new.

  • The school(s) that interest you: colleges and universities are some of the best scholarship sources. Be aware that you must be a student enrolled at or attending the institution to qualify for an award.
  • Scholarship websites: some websites gather scholarships from all over and make them easier to find. Check out the links below and explore what they have to offer:

  • Google: yes, search engines can help a lot! See below for some advice on keywords to consider when looking for scholarships in Canada so you don’t get overwhelmed.

What should I consider when I’m searching for scholarships in Canada?

Here’s an inexhaustive list of factors to consider when you’re searching. It can be good practice to adjust these different factors slightly as you explore. For example, if you’re interested in biology, be sure to look for “STEM” scholarships as well.

  • Field of study: the program you’re taking is a big factor. Of late, we’re seeing more and more STEM-focused awards — so chem might be a better choice than contemporary poetry.
  • Activities: extra-curriculars, sports, arts, etc. The big three are: volunteering, leadership, and community involvement. Taking part in school clubs, tutoring others, friendly visits at the retirement home: all great stuff.
  • Heritage: lots of awards are aimed at folks from specific demographic groups. Awards for Indigenous students are most common in Canada, but there are scholarships for Black students, Muslim students, Chinese students, etc.
  • Affiliation: companies, religious organizations, non-profits, or unions, that your child, or you as a parent, belong to. The larger the organization, the more likely they’ll offer scholarships.
  • Personal circumstances: foster children, single parents, members of the LGBTQ+ community, etc. Anything indelible about who you are could lead to a scholarship.

Basically, do a self-inventory to identify unique facets about you and your personal story, then look to see what might fit!

Can students apply for scholarships if they’re also taking student loans?

Yes! Student loan applications will look at the financial picture of your family, and ask about your estimated level of scholarship funding as part of that picture. Still, you’ll be able (even encouraged) to apply for scholarships alongside provincial/federal student loans. Receiving a large scholarship may impact your loan amount, but at least you won’t have to pay that money back!

Bear in mind, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will have an easier time finding awards in Canada than those from abroad. Conversely, Canadians studying at a school overseas will face more challenges finding funding. Scholarships for international students do exist, but they’re rarer and more competitive than their domestic counterparts.

Got questions about scholarships in Canada? Check out ScholarshipsCanada or drop us a line directly at [email protected].

Thanks for reading, and happy hunting!

Looking for another epic family adventure this summer? Let me introduce you to zip lining at Chicopee Tube Park!

Located about an hour from Burlington, in Cambridge, Chicopee Tube Park became Chicopee Zip Lining this summer and we greatly recommend a visit for all families who love an exciting adventure!

How Old Do You have to be to zip line at Chicopee Tube Park?

You need to be at least 4 years old and 42″ tall to zip line at Chicopee. We saw kids of all ages and even grandparents zip-lining while we were there. There is no maximum age for excitement!

When we were there, on a Thursday, there were also 4 or 5 other families, ranging in size from 3 to 5 family members also there. That may sound like a lot, but the way the entire process works, you are not near anyone at any time, unless you choose to be.

How Does Zip Lining Work Exactly?

I can’t explain the safety or science of it, but the entire process was so smooth and I felt safe the entire time.

When you arrive for your pre-booked time, you check in at the window. The staff then meets you outside to get harnessed up and fitted for your helmet. From there, you waddle your way over to the people-mover conveyor belt that takes you about halfway up the hill, then you walk the rest of the way.

From there, you climb the stairs to the “launch platform”. You can have up to 4 zip liners go at one time. From there, a gate is opened and you walk out a couple of steps then you JUMP! Yup, you just lift your feet and the zip line does its job helping you fly through the sky.

The ride lasts 30 seconds, although you’d never know it was so quick! Then it’s time to be unhooked thanks to the team on the skyjacks. Check out our videos on Instagram!

What about little kids?

Don’t fret, there is excitement for them, too! Chicopee has a Mini Me zip line, too! We wouldn’t want little ones to miss out on the fun.
