Andrew’s Scenic Acres

Kids Will Love:

Wagon rides to the apple picking fields, photo opportunities, ‘gently’ haunted, cornfield walks, and straw mountain for jumping.

Admission and Apple Pricing:

Admission $15 per person over 5 years old when you pre-buy online. Buying at the farm is $16.95 per person over 5 years old, seniors $12.95.

The PYO apples season can be short due to weather, call ahead to avoid disappointment. Sunflower Kingdom admission is an additional fee. 2026 pick your own apples pricing is pending confirmation.

The Apple Orchard

Open Thursday through Monday from 9 am till 5 pm.

Kids Will Love:

The corn pit, wagon rides (weekdays only), a corn maze, a large sunflower field, the animals and even some gnomes. Come back and pick your own pumpkins! This farm for Apple Picking in Hamilton has lots to offer beyond apple picking near me!

Admission and Apple Pricing:

Admission is $12.83 +HST adults, $12.39 +HST seniors, $11.95 +HST kids and kids under 2 are free.

All pick-your-own apples/pears are $2.37/lb – wow, great deal! They also have cider and other fresh picked produce

Applevale Orchards

5144 Derry Rd, Burlington

Applevale is open 7 days a week, from 10 am -5 pm during the picking season. The. season starts on September 12, 2026. Call if the weather isn’t great as they may close early.

Kids Will Love:

Apple picking and fresh apple cider to purchase. This farm is geared towards picking apples only, less so for a family day out.

Admission and Apple Pricing:

Orchard entry for U-Pick requires a minimum product purchase of $40 (orchard bag) per family.

Carluke Orchards

2194 Shaver Rd S., Ancaster

Picking starts September 12, 2026. Open Tuesdays thru Saturdays from 8 am till 6 pm and Sundays from 11 am till 5. Closed Mondays.

Kids Will Love:

The farm market store sells old-fashioned candy, take a wagon ride through the apple orchards, and the apples of course! Buy a wristband for access to the Petting Zoo, Wagon Ride, Corn Maze and the new Tractor Tire Park. Wristbands are $4 Tuesday-Friday and $12 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Admission and Apple Pricing:

Pick Your Own Season runs from early September until Mid October. We have 13 apple varieties available, as well as pick your own pumpkins and squash. Check below for our predicted picking schedule!

Chudleigh’s Entertainment Farm

General admission: open daily from 8:30 am – 6 pm including holidays. Select your 3 hour time-slot and enjoy unlimited access to our farm animals, children’s play area, nature trail, tractor wagon ride, apple orchard and more! Most apples are pick-your-own or are already picked and bagged.

Kids Will Love:

Chudleigh’s is great for young families. The activities include giant slides and play structure, “retired” tractors, horse tire swings, farm animals, wagon rides, hay bail jump. Pony rides every day weather permitting.

Admission and Apple Pricing:

Pre-purchase your tickets for your 3-hour visit online. Children under 3 are free, 4-12 years old are $16.50, adults are $12.50 and seniors 65+ are $18.00. Apple picking is an additional charge – 2025 pricing: standard bags for $15 and large bags for $28. Waiting to hear back on 2026 prices.

Parents have told us trees are low enough for little arms to reach. Kid’s korral will be open for little friends to enjoy.

What To Expect When You Visit

• Every arcade in Ontario is completely unique. They will each have a different quantity and line up of games to choose from. If you;re looking for a specific game, call ahead and see if they have that one.
• Some arcades still run on quarters (sorry, no more penny arcades!) and some run with credit card-like payments where you load an amount of money on the card and use the card to pay for game play. Video games are often priced as “credits”, so it takes 2 credits to play a game, etc.
• Time of day will generally determine how busy the arcade will be. Kids should be ready to wait in line to play the newest and most popular games.

One of the top reasons families love going to the Royal Botanical Gardens in the nice weather is their great natural playground. Access is included in your admission. Kids love channelling the Swiss Family Robinson as they explore the wooden play structures. They’ll scale the giant tunnel slide and lots of hideouts to spark imaginative play times.

While you’re at Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, you must explore the Mediterranean Garden and the Cactus Garden. Two beautiful spots filled with various domestic and exotic plants, cactuses, succulents, and fruit trees. My favourite or the lemon trees! In addition to the gardens, check out the water features and the fish pond. So tranquil! Royal Botanical Gardens is a perfect mini escape from the winter cold.

Oakville Galleries

Housed in two spaces in downtown Oakville there are travelling exhibitions as well as a permanent collection. The Ship of Tolerance, pictured above, is on display at Gairloch Gardens until September 30, 2026. The exhibit “emanates humanitarianism, freedom and justice. This anti-war sculpture rejects deferences to hegemonic power and speaks of better, alternative futures, which we are free to produce.”

Kids Will Love:

This colourful ship exhibit is eye-catching and massive in scale. Kids will also love looking for frogs and turtles in the pond.

Milton Family-Friendly Museums and Galleries

Halton County Radial Railway

See the collection of historic streetcars, trains, and buses at Halton County Radial Railway Museum. After that, experience life on the rails on the 2km full-sized electrical railway. Look out for their very popular Halloween and Christmas events to start back up! We love this immersive kid-friendly museum for all ages.

Kids Will Love:

Riding real train cars and all of the hands-on magic that comes from playing make-believe here. Have a scoop of ice cream when you visit in the summer!

Burlington Children’s Museums and Art Galleries

Ireland House Museum

Once occupied by the Ireland family between 1835 and 1985, Ireland House shows what life was like in the 1850s, 1890s, and 1920s. Take a guided or self-guided tours of the homestead and barns to immerse yourself in olden times. See rooms recreated to show sleeping quarters, cooking areas and more. Ireland House is home to a traditional Victorian Christmas event, there are often special days or programs to look out for all year through.

Getting an up close look at life in the 1800s, including the chores kids did and where they stayed while they were ill so as to not spread germs.

Art Gallery of Burlington

The AGB is located in the downtown neighbourhood of Burlington, right on Lakeshore Road. It is free to visit any of the exhibits and galleries, but donations are greatly appreciated. The exhibits rotate throughout the year, so visiting is always a great idea.

Kids Will Love:

The whimsical works on display. Our fave is in the front foyer. The AGB Family Studio is home to free art workshops throughout the year as well.

Joseph Brant Museum

Joseph Brant Museum has a permanent collection showing the history of the region with lots of local photographs, display items and interactive sections. See the way Burlington has evolved through time at places you see every day! There’s also a travelling exhibition space that changes a few times a year. The special exhibits are hands-on and great for families.

Kids Will Love:

The permanent kid-friendly section called the Children’s Gallery. This gallery is where kids get hands-on with a variety of ways to learn about Burlington. Activities encourage kids to use STEAM techniques to play and learn simultaneously.

Get ready to spark some curiosity at Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology! It’s the perfect mix of history and STEM learning, where families can explore, ask questions, and see the power of steam in action — making it a fun (and surprisingly cool!) day out in Hamilton.

Wander the historic Gage family homestead, stroll the scenic parkland under the Niagara Escarpment.

Hamilton Children’s Museum – Now Open!

After being closed for years, it’s finally open! The Hamilton Children’s Museum was totally designed with kids and families in mind. You’ll love that everything’s meant to be touched and played with. Each section of the kid-friendly museum focuses on the different areas of the city: Urban, Escarpment, Rural and Water. Kids will love sailing boats and exploring waterfalls. Then they can flex their imaginations while dressing up or gardening. Be sure to take some time in the quiet zones and enjoy some soft play and relaxing away from the excitement. Art Gallery of Hamilton

The AGH is home of one of our favourite art installations, the Bruegel-Bosch bus. You will spend so much time staring deeply at this display because there is SO MUCH to see! You’ll see retro action figures, seasonal decor, collectibles and more! All meticulously placed for our viewing. Make sure to also check out the rest of the 2nd floor, which is always free for families to visit. Read about our visits here.

H.M.C.S. Haida

Step aboard history at HMCS Haida, Canada’s most famous warship! Families can explore every corner — from the huge guns on deck to the lower living quarters. Kids will love imagining what life was like aboard this massive ship. CHeck out the sleeping quarters, bathrooms, kitchen facilities and more.

Freely exploring a real war ship with ladders, tunnels, and hands-on spaces that make you feel like you’re a crew member.

Good to know:

The ship has narrow stairs and ladders, so strollers won’t work here — baby carriers are a better option. Free parking is available at Pier 8 right by the entrance.

Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

The museum was founded in 1972 by a group of aviation enthusiasts who wanted to preserve Canada’s vast aviation heritage. Today, it is one of the largest and most comprehensive aviation museums in Canada. This Hamilton museum’s collection includes over 40 aircraft, ranging from vintage biplanes to modern jet fighters.

Kids Will Love:

Westfield Heritage Village

Westfield Heritage Village expansive grounds are home to over 35 historical buildings, set in a large conservation area. Step back in time with the help of costumed interpreters, and then hike the surrounding woodlands and meadowlands. Known for Maple Syrup, Ice Cream and Christmas events there’s always a good time to visit!

Canadian Football Hall of Fame

CFL Hall of Fame houses over 30,000 items, including trophies, helmets, and playing equipment. Not to mention game and record balls, jerseys, sweaters, banners, photographs, films and videos. A must-see for any football fan! 

Kid-Friendly Museums and Galleries in Niagara

Laura Secord Homestead

This small house in the small village of Queenston was the home of and starting point of Laura Secord’s 32 km journey to warn the British of the attack planned by the Americans during the war of 1812. Your kids will love seeing the home in person after learning of Laura Secord’s brave mission in school.

Five floors of fun! THEMUSEUM has permanent and temporary exhibitions, events, and programs for all ages. Walking pianos, a bed of nails, and waterflow table are all big hits here! This is one of the best family-friendly children’s museums I’ve been to!

Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum

Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum and Doon Heritage Village: Discover the history of the Waterloo region from indigenous peoples to community settlement in the 1800s, to the industrial revolution and manufacturing boom.

Kids Will Love:

Wandering the 60-acre Doon Heritage Village where interpreters in period dress and the Building Stories app will help you learn more about the buildings and way of life from the early 1900s. 

Toronto Area Kid-Friendly Museums

The Royal Ontario Museum

Royal Ontario Museum (ROM): Explore natural history from dinosaurs to the bat cave, as well as history from around the world. With special hands-on interactive galleries, the artefacts really come alive! 

Kids Will Love:

Dinosaur fossils and skeletons, the “Light of the Desert: which is a massive, glittering 900-carat cerussite gemstone, and of course The Bat Cave! This is another “must-do” experience every family should add to their calendar.

The Hockey Hall of Fame

Casa Loma is a Kid-Friendly Museum

Sir Henry Pellatt built Casa Loma – then the biggest private residence in Canada – full of extravagant fixtures and fittings. An extremely popular film location you can see some recreations from some of the more famous movies and television shows filmed there. With a secret passage out to the carriage house, there is a lot to explore. Date specific General Admission tickets are available online.

The Village at Black Creek – formerly Black Creek Pioneer Village

Visit small-town Ontario from the 1860s made up of 40 heritage buildings, most donated and relocated to Black Creek (sometimes brick by brick!), 70 heritage animals and gardens of plants and flowers grown from heritage seeds. Costumed educators show visitors the trades and crafts of the time using some of the 50,000 artefacts on-site to bring the time to life. This was a popular school trip when I was a wee one.

Seeing – and even helping to take care of – the village animals.

McMichael Art Gallery

Focussed exclusively on indigenous and Canadian art, this beautiful gallery is home to over 6,500 artworks by the Group of Seven, First Nations, Metis, Inuit and contemporary artists. With permanent and temporary exhibitions there’s always something new. Be sure to also visit in the warm weather to explore the outdoor gallery and gardens. Walk the paths and see beautiful lands.

Burlington Beach

You should plan to be here for a full day (if you want to!) because there are washroom, change rooms, a snack bar and even a rental spot of you forget your sand toys. If you want a break from the beach, the playground is a good one, and has some good shade. Outdoor showers will make sure a little less of the sand comes home with you at the end of the day, too!

Burlington Beach has a sandy shore and shallow water. You can walk far into the lake and the water won’t go higher than 4 feet. 

Tips for visiting Burlington Beach With Your Kids

This spot is a popular destination, so expect crowds on hot days. With its popularity, parking can be difficult. Arrive early to get a parking spot, and if possible visit on a weekday.

You can find the parking prices and restrictions here. Halton residents get limited free parking passes and non-residents have to pay in advance for parking.

Spencer Smith Beach

Address: 1455 Lakeshore Rd., Burlington, ON, right at the base of the Pier.

What Parents Love

This petite and sandy patch of waterfront is perfect for dipping your toes in when you didn’t plan for a full beach day. Located at the base of the Burlington Pier, the 360 degree views are beautiful. Play on the park lawns, then build sand castles and river ways from the lake. It’s a popular stop for pup parents too! Fun fact, this is a little beach near me!

Christie Lake Conservation Area

Address: 1000 Hwy 5, Dundas, ON

What parents love

Christie Lake has a 360-metre-long sandy beach and is a great location for building sandcastles. Our readers rated this as one of the best beaches in Hamilton, especially for canoeing and stand up paddle boarding. Extend your visit and play some disc golf.

Centrally located, with ample parking.

Tips for visiting Christie Conservation Area

No reservations are required. Watch their X (Twitter) page for real-time capacity updates. Hamilton Conservation will close access and parking when they reach capacity.

Admission to Christie Conservation Area is required. Fees are: Per 1 vehicle and driver: $16.50, Per passenger over 5 years of age: $5.50, Walk/bike in: $5.50.

Kelso Beach and Conservation Area

Address: 5234 Kelso Road, Milton, ON

What Parents Love About Kelso Beach

Did you know we had such a great beach so close to home? Kelso Beach has a beautiful lake for swimming, camping, picnics, canoe rentals, and stand-up paddle boarding. There is a lifeguard on duty and a section of the lake is roped off to make it safer for swimming.

Kelso Beach is part of a 35-hectare lake. Lots of room to play with kids, put chairs on the beach, sunbathe, and play volleyball. After your swim, grab a snack at the beach concession stand.

Tips for visiting

While you’re here, you can also take a stroll along the boardwalk, try a boat rental, or go fishing.

Halton Region performs regular checks of the water quality. It’s part of their Beach Monitoring Program. They check many beaches, including Kelso Beach. Click here to see the current water quality conditions at Kelso.

Reservations are not required but are recommended. Save money by making a reservation and paying your gate fees online before you visit.

Binbrook Conservation Area Beach and More!

Address: 5050 Harrison Rd, Binbrook.

Why We Love Binbrook Beach and Conservation Area

We were late to the game on Binbrook Conservation Area! This destination has SO MUCH to do, and the beach is just the beginning. It’s home to a 391 hectare man-made lake called Lake Niapenco. We found the sand to be soft and great to building with. The water was great as well. We loved seeing the beach with wheelchair accessible mats when we visited this past summer. More accessibility needed everywhere please!

When you need a break from the beach, your kids will love the splash pad! It’s new and bright and has jets and a big bucket that dumps water! So fun! Plus, it’s included with your admission to the conservation area.

Our Tips For Visiting Binbrook Conservation Area Beach

You can bring your own water crafts, or rent them from Binbrook Wave Rentals. The beach is also home to FunSplash Sports Park, an inflatable water obstacle course that is sure to tire you out! Both the rentals and sports park are an additional cost to enjoy.

Pack a picnic, there are tables and shady spots you can set up at. Washroom and parking are plentiful too. Because of all it has to offer, this is one of the best beaches near me when you want a full day of kid-friendly fun.

Take note: The water has had it’s flare ups of blue green algae in the last few years, so definitely check the lake status before you head out.

Emerald Lake

Address: 7248 Gore Rd, Puslinch, ON

What parents love

Emerald Lake is a local favourite and our readers thought it was one of the best beaches near Hamilton! It has everything you could want for a day at the beach – and then some! This RV resort and water park is a popular destination for families because of its numerous amenities.

At Emerald Lake, you can enjoy the 5-acre spring-fed lake and the 5-acre spring-fed quarry. The quarry has a water park including a trampoline, a rock climbing wall, obstacle course, catapult, and more.

You’ll also have access to the 2′ deep kiddie pool, the 200′ water slide, their 3,400-square-foot rubber surfaced splash pad, beach volleyball courts and a basketball court. Additionally, there is a snack bar and life jacket rentals on site.

Families of all ages rank this as one of their favourite beaches near Hamilton.

Tips for visiting

Some notes from Emerald Lake’s website: No reservations necessary to visit the waterpark for the day. We do have lifeguards on duty, but it is your responsibility as parents to watch your children. Life jackets are mandatory for all persons using water toys and in water toys area as well as no one under the age of 12 is permitted to go to the water park without adult supervision.

• (Weekdays) $25 + HST  (ages 4 – 64)

Lakeside Park Beach in Port Dalhousie

Address: 1 Lakeport Rd, St. Catharines

What parents love

This has always been one of our favourite beaches near Burlington and Hamilton. The shallow Lake Ontario water is great for younger kids to play in. The sand was warm and perfect for castle building and beach volleyball. My girls have been going here for years and love it.

They also have a snack bar in case you forget drinks/snacks.

But possibly the best feature is the working antique carousel at Lakeside Park Beach in Port Dalhousie. It’s over 100 years old and each ride is only 25 cents! This is a staple on the ActiveParents summer bucket list!

Tips for visiting Lakeside Beach

The beach itself is free to access, but you do need to pay for parking in the lot. Pay with an app or credit card.

Lots of shade and grassy areas for picnicking or playing ball. We always pack a picnic or you can visit the snack bar when you’re peckish. Add some ice cream to your day!

Valens Conservation Area – One of The Best Beaches Near Me!

Address: 1691 Regional 97 Rd, Cambridge

Why We love Valens Conservation Area

Valens is another one of the Hamilton beaches that has glowing reviews from seasoned visitors, and we concur! Readers agreed with us about the clean facilities and overall beach cleanliness. I love the swimming area at Valens. We go multiple times throughout the summer. The sandy beach is the best for building castles.

Spend the day, or camp overnight, rent a canoe and unwind with the family. I love that there is lots of shade, it’s just back a little from the waterfront. This is my favourite beach near me! I endorse a visit fully.

Tips for visiting

No reservations are required. If the beach reaches capacity, Hamilton Conservation will close the parking lot and beach access. Watch their social pages for real-time capacity updates.This was a photo we tok when we visited on a HDSB PA Day in September. Don’t stop going to the beach just because school has starte dyp again – September beach days are amazing!

Pricing

Admission to the conservation area is required. Fees are: Per 1 vehicle and driver: $16.50, Per passenger over 5 years of age: $5.50, Walk/bike in: $5.50.

Bay Beach – also known as Crystal Beach

Address: 4155 Erie Road, Fort Erie

What parents love

The beautiful, clear waters are where Crystal Beach in Fort Erie got its name. The waters are ideal for canoeing and kayaking, some stand-up paddle-boarding, and swimming.

Washrooms and change rooms are available. PlLeave your pets at home, they are not permitted on the beach.

Tips for Visiting Crystal Beach

Visit this beach can be confusing because there are various prices.

Non-Residents have to purchase a day pass to visit Crystal Beach. When you visit on a weekday, passes are $5 per person. When you visit on a holiday or Friday through Saturday, passes are $10 per person. Children 12 years and under are free. 

Residents can purchase a full season pass for only $10 per person. You need to be a taxpayer, and it covers all of your household members. To help lower costs for families, children 12 years old and under can access the beach for free all season.

Turkey Point Provincial park

Address: 194 Turkey Point Rd, Turkey Point

What parents love

Not exactly one of the beaches near Burlington, but this one comes highly recommended by the parents who follow us on Facebook, so we knew we had to add it. Turkey Point is an Ontario Provincial Park and it’s open May 1, 2026 to October 25, 2026.

It is a 2km wide beach boasting beautiful sand and ideal conditions for families. Even thought this isn’t as close as the beaches near me, it is worth the drive and makes a great day trip.

Tips for visiting

No lifeguards here. Life jackets are available to rent. The water is shallow, which makes it a family favourite.

Turkey Point is approx 90 minutes from Burlington/Hamilton. Definitely an easy-to-do day trip for the summer.

Pricing

Purchase a Daily Vehicle Pass (similar to day access at Bronte Creek) for $21.00 and everyone in your car/van is covered. Both paid and free parking are available close to the beach.

Long Point Provincial Park

Address: 350 Erie Blvd, Port Rowan, ON

What parents love

Long Point is another Provincial Park that we highly recommend. I think it’s one of the best beaches near Burlington. Lots of families raved about it and we finally made it there last summer. The drive from Burlington was about 2 hours.

I took this photo above when we were there, and although it looks busy, there was a ton of space. We didn’t have anyone within 10 feet of us the whole time. 

The beach is massive and clean, and the Lake Erie water was great.

Tips for your visit

The parking lot fills up quickly, and people come and go all day long. Street parking is also available in various locations.

We saw folks with mini BBQs and pop up shelters who were there for lunch and dinner.

Purchase a Daily Vehicle Pass (similar to day access at Bronte Creek) for $21.00 and everyone in your car/van is covered. Both paid and free parking are available close to the beach.

You may be asking why I love an outdoor movie night so much. I’ll tell you! I really think these are the ideal family activity for a summer evening. Very little preparation needs to go into the outing. We pick up takeout or a pizza and eat it picnic-style on the grass before the movie starts. Other times we bring kid-approved charcuterie-style dinners.

Our list includes all of the Outdoor Movie Nights in the area, including Movies Under The Stars and Movies By The Lake in Burlington. Those are the movie nights held in Spencer Smith Park all summer long.

What Should You Bring To Outdoor Movie Nights?

You don’t need much to make this casual outdoor activity with kids great. Here’s what we suggest bringing with you to the free outdoor movie night. This list applies to Movies By The Lake and Movies Under The Stars, too!

• Camping chair or picnic blanket to sit on
• Drinks and snacks for everyone
• Wear your fave jammies
• Bring a small blanket just in case the temp drops once the sun goes down
• Bug spray – just in case!
• Something to do before the movie starts – a frisbee, a ball, skipping rope, a scooter, an activity book, etc.

In spring and summer, you can pick strawberries, peonies, raspberries, blueberries, currants, dahlias, and gooseberries at Andrew’s Farms – formerly Andrew’s Scenic Acres – with 165 acres to explore. PYO strawberries start mid-June. Bring your own harvest basket or buy one at the farm. A fabulous outing with you’re on the hunt for a farm adventure!

Andrew’s Farms Admission and Pricing:

• Admission is $16.43 + HST per person and kids under 5 are free.
• 2026 strawberry picking prices were not listed on their website yet.
• There’s no charge to visit the farm store or winery. Outside food is not permitted. BBQ lunch and ice cream are available on weekends.

Downey’s Apple and Strawberry Farm

We included Downey’s as an option after we saw a few families say they made the drive because it’s worth it. Strawberry picking starts in June, keep watching here for updates. Raspberry picking is on the calendar as well!

The approximate dates are mid-June for strawberries, early July for raspberries, and end of August for apples. There is an approximately 5 min walk to reach the strawberry field. Strollers and wagons are NOT permitted in the fields.

• 4 litre (max 4 people picking into the basket)  $34

We’ve been creek walking for years, and both of my kids love it. In fact, I didn’t even know it was a “thing” until this year! For kids of all ages, its a great way to connect them to nature and to get up close and personal with wildlife. Kids will investigate habitats and ecosystems and won’t even realize it’s educational!

As with all of our outdoor suggestions, please tread lightly and leave nature as you found it so we can all continue to enjoy it.

Hidden Valley Park

1137 Hidden Valley Rd, Burlington, ON

Did you know there are two Hidden Valley Parks? Well, maybe it just seems that way because the park is separated in two by Lemonville Road. On one side, you’ve got a playground and splash pad, and on the south side of the road, you’ve got a second playground and Grindstone Creek.

Park on the south side in the (free) parking lot and you’ll see a red-brown bridge. This is where the fun starts! Under this bridge, we’ve seen tiny fish (minnows?), frogs, crayfish and more. It’s a great way to get up close and personal with a watery habitat and it’s inhabitants. A great chance for some learning, too!

Don’t let the fun stop there! Hidden Valley has great walking and hiking trails, and if you look off the beaten path, you just might find something awesome. We did!

Tuck Creek (beside John T. Tuck Elementary School)

Looking for creek walking in Burlington’s south area? This spot is a fave of ours because it’s closed to Grandma’s house and a school park. Add in the cool tunnel and the graffiti and your kids will feel like they’re adventurers! The rocks are smooth for the most part, so walking along them is easier. Plus, lots of little nooks and crannies like the one below that double perfectly as a fort or a hidden hideaway. We don’t usually see much wildlife in or around the water here, but the water tends to be shallower so lots of creek stomping to be had!

Creek Walking in Burlington’s Lowville Park

6207 Lowville Park Rd, Burlington, ON

Lowville is a fantastic park to spend a whole day at. They’ve got everything you could want, and the creek stomping is the cherry on top! Bronte Creek runs through Lowville Park, and there are lots of access points to dip your toes in. The enormous trees shade you and help to keep you cooler, and there are walking paths to stroll along as well. Bronte Creek is a large creek and the water heights can really fluctuate with the season and the rainfall. And if you go in the fall, you can see the salmon run – wow! The bridge pictured below is perfect for observing the fun from a dry distance.

Essentials for Successful Creek Walking

Attire: Wear your water shoes or Crocs or something similar – flip flops get slippery and provide zero stability (ask me how I know). Or if the water is very cold in the spring, bring your rubber boots. Dress to get wet and probably muddy.

Gear: Bring a bucket and a little net to scoop up some minnows, tadpoles tiny frogs, and even crayfish. Remember to catch and release so they’re all home by dinner time!

Welcome To Park 1 at Hidden Valley Park

Hidden Valley Park needs to be high on your list of parks to visit if you’ve not been yet. Located in Aldershot, we were originally drawn to it because my kids love monkey bars and geocaching. If you have a monkey bars fan, they’ll get a good challenge here.

Hidden Valley Park is located off of Plains Road West, just west of Waterdown Road. There is a large gravel parking lot, with enough parking for about 40-50 visitors. When you arrive, you’ll breathe a huge sigh of relief as you see the – cue the angels singing – public washrooms. Yes, it has public washrooms!

The park is fenced in on the side facing the parking lot, with the perfect mix of enough fence for safety, but not feeling like it’s closed in. As I mentioned, we were on a mission for monkey bars, so my trio of terrors took off for the play structures. Hidden Valley Park has a larger structure and a smaller one. My kiddos were 6 and 8, so they had no trouble with any of the equipment. I saw little diapered kiddos roaming all over too, but on the above-ground structure there are openings, so they’ll need to be supervised.

Playground Equipment At Hidden Valley Park

Hidden Valley has a variety of climbers and slides, and the ramps that connected them provided just as much entertainment. The kids imagined that the structure was everything from a tree house a la Swiss Family Robinson, a pirate ship, a space ship and an apartment for superheroes. There were swings for big kids and swings for little kids and a high-back full-support swing. We were happy to see that the picnic tables were wheelchair accessible.

When you walk the Hidden Valley Park grounds, you’ll come to the Burlington Model Railway Club. It was closed on the day we were there, but it is open to the public during its various free events throughout the year.

Geocaching and Exploring

Walk to the wooded side of the parking lot and you come across a bridge that takes you over Grindstone Creek, and to a clearing with what my kids described as a “ghost cabin”. I’m not sure what it was before, but now it’s just a boarded-up stone building no bigger than a shed. And it’s not scary, so don’t worry. We were hot on the trail of a geocache, so we climbed the steep hill and were met with two amazing treasures.

Much like the “ghost cabin”, the history of the rusted-out car is unknown to me, but we had tons of fun imagining how it got there. Was it an off-road ride gone awry? I’d love to know more about either of these little gems, so if you have details, leave them in the comments below.

After our geocache adventure at Hidden Valley Park, we sat in the gazebo to have a snack and rehydrate, then we hit up the (surprisingly clean) restrooms before getting in the truck and going home. Disclaimer: The restrooms had toilet paper, were checked throughout the day, and didn’t smell, and to me that is clean.

But That’s Not All!

We promised you two parks and we are bringing you two parks! Hidden Valley has a large footprint, so it crossed a road and continues on the south side of Lemonville Road you’ll find more fun and adventure.

While we love the spray pad at the park details above, we love the easy access to Grindstone Creek in this section of the park the most. My kids are huge into creek walking and nature exploring so this is one of our favourite places to visit in Burlington. Bring your rubber boots, a bucket and a small net. You can catch some wee little fish and crayfish to check them out up close. Just remember to catch and release.

And keep your eyes peeled for awesome discoveries like this skull from a furry friend who either died of old age or at the paws of a predator. Science at its finest! There is a pathway that has a great canopy cover from the spring through the fall. It’s shady and packed gravel which makes it perfect for families, wagons and strollers.

This portion of Hidden Valley Park is also home to a playground with a dinosaur theme. Plus swings and climbers, and another shaded gazebo. Pack a picnic because there are dozen of picnic tables to take full advantage of.

43. Indoor Swimming Pools are less busy in the summer and therefore the perfect way to ensure you don’t get sunburned.

44. Beat Your Kids At Mini Golf – we have some unique and creative mini-putt courses nearby.

Cheap Things To Do With The Family This Summer

45. Kids Bowl Free All Summer Long! Register your child for 2 free games of bowling all summer and you’ll always have a rainy-day plan up your sleeve.

46. What Is Footgolf? It’s part golf and part soccer…and all fun! This Hamilton golf course is where you can play.

47. Explore The Karsts – a Karst is a cave-like opening in the earth and Eramosa Karst Conservation Area is the coolest place to see them.

48. Walk The Gnome Trail at Bronte Creek with your little ones and their imaginations will run wild.

54. Chalk art. Write messages at the end of the driveway to spread cheer, positivity, and love to your neighbourhood and people passing by.

55. Make a chalk mosaic like the one below from The Idea Room. It’s a big impact and so simple!

56. Make a chalk obstacle course with spots to jump, spin, balance, and hop. Check out these clever ways to play hopscotch with your preschooler.

57. Practice sight words and spelling words! Reading is everywhere!

58. Chalk a bike town. Include all the fun places you want to explore once this has all passed.

59. Jump Rope and learn a new rhyme.

60. Find a story and chalk about it! Chalk by Bill Thomson is about three kids who find a bag of magical chalk and quickly discover that their drawings come to life!

4 Hot Ways to Cool Down at Home

82. Get out that sprinkler, pool, or just the garden hose! With most of the pools and splash pads closed this year don’t worry about your grass this Summer. You’ll have time next Summer for a perfect yard. If you want to venture out try one of these beaches.

83. Make a homemade Slip N’ Slide! With a tarp, some dish soap and a garden hose, enjoy an afternoon of slippery fun!

84. Have a water balloon fight! Fill up some water balloons, assemble teams, aim and splash! One of the best free things to do in the summer.

85. Build a cool fan tent! Use a thin bed sheet and a box fan to make a cozy but cool hideout and enjoy your favourite book, nap or draw!

More Things to Do Around Your Neighbourhood

86. Go on a scavenger hunt. Rainbows, hearts, bears, what can you find? We have outdoor and indoor scavenger hunts on our website.

87. Geocache. It’s a scavenger hunt in your own neighbourhood and so easy to do.

88. Counting walk. Count the number of… trees, cars, squirrels, birds, cats, dogs, people, something you normally see in your neighbourhood.

89. Chalk a trail. Leave a trail of hearts on your walk for fun little surprises.

90. Pick up trash. Teach your kiddos our responsibility to our planet and why it’s important not to litter.

91. Freeze walk. Play music and when the music stops freeze or strike a pose.

92. Add a game to your walk. Red light. Green light. Simon Says. Mother, May I. I-Spy. These classic games can be incorporated into fun walks with kiddos.

93. Bring a stuffed animal friend. Everything is more fun with your favourite stuffy or doll when you are little.

94. Grab the binoculars. This keeps kids busy and you never know what you’ll run into. Don’t have real ones? Make your little one some pretend ones out of toilet paper rolls, thanks to Pinterest.

95. Take pictures. Challenge older kiddos with a photo challenge. Or do a photo scavenger hunt.

96. Take a night walk. We bring flashlights and look for bats, stars, and more.

97. Research your neighbourhood’s history. Many neighbourhoods have historic buildings, houses and stores. Research their history and see when they were built! The Burlington Historical Society and this Hamilton site have lots of great resources on their website.

98. Scoot around on scooters. Try out one of these skate parks. A friendly reminder to wear your helmet.

99. Set up a lemonade stand or a craft stand. Sell handmade works of art to passersby.

101. Organize a Toy Swap for your neighbourhood. Kids can swap toys and have fresh new fun all summer long.

102. Plant a strawberry bush and watch the sweet berries grow. String beans grow quickly too.

103. Connect with the neighbourhood families and swap out child-minding so each set up adults gets some free time – my fave!

104. Bring small toys outside and snap photos of them in big scenes. Think Jurassic Park and super heroes!

The museum features a replica of Joseph Brant’s original homestead alongside the modern exhibition spaces. It houses three permanent galleries, travelling exhibitions and provides dedicated areas for educational programs like camps for kids.

Hours, Admission and Parking

Admission to Joseph Brant Museum includes access to all of the permanent galleries, any special exhibits, the Children’s Gallery plus a visit to the rooftop garden. The lake views and seating are a peaceful stop in warmer temperatures.

Admission: Adults $10, Students and Seniors $8, Children $6 or take advantage of the family rate for $30. It includes up to two adults and four children.

The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 AM till 4 PM and is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

There is free parking on site at the museum and paid parking close by.

Permanent Exhibitions

The Burlington Gallery – The History and Origin Story of Burlington, Ontario

The Burlington Gallery talks all about Burlington’s history and we honestly learned so many cool things about Burlington and its origins. The exhibits are fantastic and let you get right up close to the historic artifacts.

In The Burlington Gallery, kids and grown-ups will learn all about the history of popular and significant Burlington landmarks. You will witness old toys and board games that our grandparents may have played with. We spent lots of time in this room and we learned a ton. My mother-in-law moved here when she was young, and knows many of the features that are no longer where they once stood.

Teachers and homeschooling families: This would be an excellent place for a field trip!

Enjoy A Stay at The Brant Inn

The second large room, called The Costume Gallery, is dedicated to The Brant Inn. Have you heard of it? I had heard a little bit about it, but it was a great exhibit to have Grandma at because she was familiar with so much of the history and the famous visitors it’s been host to in its time. She told the girls about the clothing, the music and the jewellery. It’s always great to foster that connection between grandparents and grandkids.

Essential Stop: The Children’s Gallery at Joseph Brant Museum

This section focuses on S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) and delivers it in a way kids will love and learn from. Each exhibit in the Children’s Gallery encourages kids to put their brains to use to solve problems and accomplish tasks. Your kids will love it here. My 11-year-old didn’t want to leave! And neither did my husband LOL.

Ride the pedal-powered bikes to see how far you can make it around Burlington. Use the massive light-up pegboard to create a picture. Everything your kids do will be hands-on and there are lots of options for open-ended exploration. Parents have the pleasure of sitting back and watching children learn through play.

Joseph Brant Museum underwent a phenomenal renovation that has created a beautiful destination for learning and exploring in Burlington. This gallery is a great bonus at this family and children’s museum.

Current Special Exhibit: eat make share: a taste of immigration

Programs For Children

In addition to all of the reasons to visit this family and children’s museum that we listed above, the museum is also a popular host for children’s programming:

Toddler days are designed for children ages 2 to 4. The sessions offer themed hands-on activities every week the cost is $12 per child and one accompanying adult is free.

School break camps at Joseph Brant Museum are popular and get great reviews from parents. Each week has a different theme in the summer and every PA day camp has its own theme as well. Click here to learn more about children’s camps.

Don’t Miss The Gift Shop

One of my new favourite places to buy unique presents for friends and family (and a few for myself!) is the gift shop at the Museum. Their products are quality and curated with a keen eye for in-demand items for kids and adults. I love their mugs and keychains, and their wooden children’s toys are great for gifting to toddlers. Dofasco Waterjet Plaza (aka Spencer Smith Park Splash Pad)

Located at 1340 Lakeshore Road

The Spencer Smith Park Splash Pad is possibly Burlington’s most famous spot in the summer. The picturesque location is frequented by locals and tourists from surrounding cities. The 30 waterjets spray intermittently and at different heights for kids to laugh and run through, while parents can sit on the perimeter in the sun or shade and watch their kids.

The Spencer Smith Park splash pad is free to use, although parking is sometimes tricky and can cost you depending on the time of day you visit. The playground is right beside when you need a change of pace. Washrooms and a snack bar are just inside the building adjacent to the pad.

Mountainside Pool and Splash Park – Opening TBD

2205 Mount Forest Drive.

Recently renovated and even more fun for families! Mountainside Pool now offers a corkscrew side and a climbing wall that drops you right into the deep end of the pool! Families with young kids will appreciate the gradual beach entry in the shallow end. Cool down with the gentle sprinklers in the shallow end as well. Kids of all ages will love the dumping bucket in the splash pad section.

Hidden Valley Park Splash Pad

Located at 1137 Hidden Valley Road.

This splash park in Burlington is one of our favourites. Visitors can easily spend the entire day enjoying the playground, the spray pad and the picnic space. Water jets shoot up from the pad that is surrounded by a park, greenspace, Hidden Valley Creek, and a covered gazebo perfect for a picnic. Plenty of other picnic tables around the park. The park is also home to the Burlington Model Railway Club. Ample parking and washrooms on site.

LaSalle Splash Park and Wading Pool – Opening TBD

50 North Shore Blvd.

LaSalle Park Wading Pool is a top choice for so many families. The wading pool ranges from half a foot deep to 2.5 feet deep, and kids of all ages love it, so it’s ideal for a group outing. Both adults and children pay admission (adults are no longer free). You can even rent the wading pool for a private party! Washrooms and picnic spots on site.

Nelson Pool and Splash Park – Opening TBD

4235 New Street, between Guelph Line and Walkers Line.

The city’s pool and splash park combo are always suggested as a parent’s favourite outdoor pool in Burlington. The gradual entry pool is large and bright, with clear eye-sights from one end to the other. The spray pad is separated from the pool and includes a huge dumping bucket that is a hit with all kids. Lots of water jets and fun accessories in the splash park. The pool has diving boards and a rock wall that is excellent for your little daredevils. There are many lifeguards on duty, and both shady and sunny spots to set up camp.

Bolus Garden Parkette Spray Pad

970 Francis Road

We love this neighbourhood park and the addition of a spray pad was a great idea. Located at Francis Road and Plains Road, parking is non-existent, but you can find street parking a little further down Francis.

Brant Hills Park Splash Pad

Brant Hills Park, behind the Community Centre, 2255 Brant St

This is a new splash pad in the Brant Hills community area with above-ground water play features. There are a variety of seating options, including accessible metal tables with umbrellas and Adirondack chairs. 

DesJardins Park Splash pad

1811 Imperial Way

This new splash pad is in a recessed area surrounded by benches and asphalt pathways. Picnic tables, a shade structure and a drinking fountain with water bottle filler (and a pet bowl for your furry friends) make it the perfect getaway!

Norton Community Park Splash Pad

Located at 3040 Tim Dobbie Drive

Norton Park splash pad in Burlington is huge in size and full of things to encourage kids to have fun. The round splash pad has water jets and is right beside a park, skate park, and green space. Pack a picnic and maybe some cash. I’ve been at this splash pad many times when the ice cream truck arrives!

The Alton Recreation Centre is across the spacious parking lot, which gives you washrooms, indoor gyms, basketball courts, and the library. This may need to be a 2-day trip!

 Orchard Community Park Splash Pad

2255 Sutton Drive

Orchard Park is the quintessential community park. It’s a favourite gathering spot for local families and features a splash pad with water jets spraying from the concrete pad. With shade umbrellas, seating areas, grassy knolls and a playground. The park is free to attend and washroom facilities are open seasonally.

Halton County Radial Railway

Address: 13629 Guelph Line, Milton, ON

Halton County Radial Railway (HCRR) has historical trains, streetcars and railway objects.  There’s 2 km of track and operating streetcars.  Take a ride and get off for an ice cream.  The HCRR is owned and operated by the Ontario Electric Railway Historical Association.  It opens for the season in May and runs until October. Admission is per person, and they offer family passes, too! If you have a young train enthusiast in the family or you are looking for a unique birthday party idea, the Halton County Radial Railway also does birthday parties.

Dundas Valley Conservation Area

Address: 650 Governors Road, Dundas, ON

At Dundas Valley Conservation Area, visitors can discover a unique attraction—a decommissioned train. This vintage train car, nestled amidst the natural beauty, serves as a fascinating reminder of the area’s history. It offers a glimpse into the past, allowing visitors to explore its exterior, peek through the windows and imagine the journeys it once embarked upon. The train car as well as a replica of a Victorian train station stands as a captivating feature, blending heritage with nature in this picturesque conservation area. Unfortunately, the interior of the train is no longer open to the public.

Westfield Heritage Village

Address: Westfield Heritage Village, 1049 Kirkwall Road, Rockton, Ontario

A trip to Westfield Heritage Village is a trip back in time and there’s the historic Jerseyville station and Locomotive 103 steam train to explore.  The locomotive was built in 1910 by Montreal Locomotive Works.  It’s been fully restored, is the largest artifact in the Village, and is used in programming, photo shoots and movies.  On Sunday’s and Holidays, parking at the Westfield Conservation Area is $11 per car and admission is $5.50 per person aged 6 years and up. Monday through Saturday, there is a flat rate admission fee of $16.50 per carload.

Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology

900 Woodward Ave, Hamilton, Ontario

Known as the Steam Museum, the Museum offers Train Days by the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers in the summer and into the fall.  Train Days is a free event included with Museum entry that is by donation held on select days each summer.  Ride on a miniature steam train for free around the grounds.  Kids are gonna love it.  Check the Active Parents calendar for upcoming Train Days events. 

Local GO Train and Via Rail Stations

You don’t have to travel far to find a GO train station or a Via rail station in our region. The stations are busy and exciting, no matter the time of day. You can watch from afar or get an up-close look from the platform. Trains go whizzing by all day long and passengers love to exchange waves.

Port Stanley Terminal Rail

Port Stanley Terminal Rail, 309 Bridge Street, Port Stanley, Ontario, N5L 1C5 | website

Welcome to Port Stanley, home to a tourist railway that’s been operating for 40 years.  There’s a 1-hour train ride and a 6-hour train ride departing from the Port Stanley Terminal.  The 1-hour Scenic Train Ride is a deal at $16.50 for adults and $10.50 for children aged 2 – 14 years.  Free for infants 1 and under. Train rides are offered every Saturday and Sunday at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm in May and June, and additionally on Wednesdays in July and August. Young kids will also enjoy the special event trains: Easter Bunny Trains, Teddy Bear Trains, Moms Day and Dads Day, Extended Parkside Trip, Music on the Rails, Murder Mystery, Pumpkin Patch and Santa Trains.   The gift shop has train-themed merchandise, Melissa & Doug, Thomas the Tank Engine and other children’s books and toys.  Train tickets may be purchased online or in the gift shop.

Waterloo Central Railway

The Heritage Hopper is a fun family afternoon train excursion with hop-on and hop-off stops along the way from Waterloo to St. Jacobs.  It makes stops at Northfield, St. Jacob’s Farmer’s Market, St. Jacobs village and Elmira.  Ride on a restored steam train and shop for fresh local produce.  There’s separate pricing for first class, coach, child, adult and senior.  A family pass for 4 costs $74.99.  Watch for themed trains for the holidays, specifically at Easter and Christmas.

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train (seasonal)

Various locations (visited 168 communities in 2022) across Canada and the USA

The CP Holiday Train started in 1999, travelling across Canada and the USA in November and December, making stops, hosting concerts, and collecting money and food for people in need.  The website has a train tracker once the Holiday Train has started.  Watch for local stops in November and December. While the Holiday Train does not offer rides, it does deliver holiday cheer! Enjoy the free concerts and be sure to bring donations for the food bank.

Freeman Station Rail Museum

1285 Fairview St, Burlington, ON L7S 1Y3

(Currently closed) Wondering where to see trains in Burlington? The Station was built in 1906 by the Grand Trunk Railway and moved to its current location and restored by the Friends of Freeman Station volunteers.  It is open for public events, class visits and private rentals. Visit the Station to learn about Burlington rail and telecommunications history.  There’s a lovingly restored 1913 Canadian Pacific Boxcar and a 1929 Canadian National Caboose onsite. When you’re there be sure to check out the model electric train diorama.  Accessible parking and washrooms.

This is a favourite park for families with kids under 8. The rubberized ground cover is a huge draw. Wobbly walkers needn’t worry about scraped knees and parents won’t be picking woodchips out of their kids shoes and clothes after an afternoon here.

The paved waterfront trail is perfect for all kinds of wheels. Pack or ride your bikes and scooters when you visit and you’ll have even more to enjoy. The views of Lake Ontario are beautiful and peaceful and there is lots of green space and shade for a picnic lunch.

Burloak Waterfront Park has Rubberized Ground Covering

With the rubber surface and the minimal stairs and lots of small slides, it’s easy to let the little ones roam free and be independent. The steep spiral slide is perfect for the adventurous kid who loves a thrill, and your tiny ones will love the pint-size slides that will give them their first solo slide ride safely! The park is home to a few mystical creatures, too. But don’t worry, they’re tame and love being included in your make-believe adventures and get climbed on.

Afternoon shade is a perk at this park when the weather is hot. There are lots of mature trees scattered throughout Burloak Park for a quick break in the shade.

It’s easy for the young ones to stay here for hours and still not want to leave. (But really? Does any kid enjoy leaving the park?)

Welcome To Mountainside Park

Mountainside Park in Burlington is centrally located beside Mountainside Community Centre, home to a 50m outdoor pool with diving board and a waterslide! The outdoor spray pad is a kid favourite with its water shooters, dumping/tipping buckets and mini water slides. During regular times, the Community Centre is home to a variety of City and private programs including after school clubs and hockey.

Let’s call the smaller park directly in front of Mountainside Recreation Centre, Park A. Park A is a smaller park, geared towards the under 5 crowd and has mulch for its base. It is bright and colourful and full of fun for toddlers to pre-schoolers. There is a lot of shade near the forest for a quick picnic snack before you adventure off into the forest for a short family-friendly hike over to the other Mountainside Park.

Lots of Space To Explore at Mountainside Park

The trails in and around Mountainside Recreation Centre are perfect for all ages. Mulch ground makes it doable with a stroller. There are many different pathways throughout that intertwine, so you can make the hike a short or as long as you’d like. The forested area includes a few bridges, lots of large tree stumps and plenty of forest animals roaming about. There are some great geocaches hidden there, and this is one of our fave “starter spots” for newbies to geocaching. See the map at the bottom of this post to see an overview of the forested area as well as its relation to the two parks.

Park B, or the other Mountainside Park has plenty of entertainment as well. The playground equipment is perfect for your adventurous toddlers and school-aged kids. Park B has a paved path all around it, a small skate park, a playground, one basketball net as well as a ton of green space.

Mountainside Park is home to a playground designed for adventurous kids, it has so many unique features. Some that I don’t even know what to call them! There’s something here for everyone from swings, to steep slides to monkey bars and more!

You can easily spend a few hours between these parks and the forested area and still not feel ready to go home yet. We definitely recommend checking out these parks.

Our Favourite Kid-Friendly Trails in Hamilton

Eramosa Karst

Address: Upper Mt Albion Rd, Stoney Creek

What Makes It Great

Part of the Hamilton Conservation group of areas, Eramosa Karst is one of the best hiking trails near me. I had never heard of it before, and attendance never seems to max out. Once I saw pictures of it I knew I had to plan a visit. A “karst” is a landscape formed by dissolving rocks like limestone, creating things like sinkholes, caves, and underground rivers.

Tips For Hiking Here

In addition to the karsts, the walking trails are ideal for any age and are stroller-friendly. There is a HUGE old tree that has split in three and provides great climbing. Be sure to take a few minutes to check out the natural spring and the views from the bench. Pack bug repellant for walking in the wooded areas, and sunscreen for walking the boardwalk.

Dundas Valley Conservation Area

What Makes It Great

Hamilton is home to some of the best kid-friendly trails in Ontario. This trail is a favourite for our family because there is so much to see along the way. The trees offer a ton of shade. I’m certain the temperatures were at least 5 degrees cooler in their shady canopy.

The trail is smooth ground for the most part, and I saw some families easily pushing their strollers. Along the main loop, you’ll come across the replica of a Victorian railway station that serves as the area’s Trail Centre. It’s also home to washrooms.

Adjacent to it is a piece of the old Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo Railway track, with a 1929 executive coach car and a 1931 baggage car. Both were donated by the Canadian Pacific Railway. We love catching equestrians riding horseback through the woods. If you have a dog, they are welcome as long as they stay on a leash.

Streams caught our attention as we made our way to the Hermitage Ruins. The magnificent stone mansion was built in 1855 by George Gordon Browne Leith, an immigrant from Scotland. The bricks used in its building originated from the Dundas Valley clay; limestone was quarried at the Credit River valley.

The Hermitage burned down in 1934. After that, Leith’s daughter built a much smaller house among the ruins and lived there until her death in 1942. The ruins have been reinforced using wooden braces to prevent further wear. Hopefully, they will be intact for years to come.

Tips For Hiking Here

Bring your camera for some great views and photo opportunities. Also bring sunscreen and water. Take time to learn about the trains and hermitage – local history is actually cool, kids!

Chedoke Radial Trail – A Free Kid-friendly Hiking Trail

Address: 120 Beddoe Dr, Hamilton
Parking/Admission Info: Pay to park, free admission.
Reservations Required?: No

What Makes It Great

Chedoke Radial Trail was another new trail for us. The trail itself is smooth ground and stroller-friendly, making it a great option for kid-friendly hiking. We went at about 11:00 am and the trail was a mix of shade and sun.

The enormous rock wall is awe-inspiring when you think of its size. The incline is roughly 200 meters and the views at the top are beautiful. There are those famous Chedoke stairs, but zero chance I’m walking up 240+ steps if I don’t have to!

Also at this Hamilton hiking trail, there are a few waterfalls that have a current/flow that fluctuates based on the current rain conditions. One waterfall, when rushing after a rainfall, pours down onto the 403!

Tips For Hiking Here

Families of all ages were also enjoying the walk. We parked at the Chedoke Golf Course on a Sunday. The lot was busy with other families and golfers. I am pleased to report that their washrooms were accessible and open (seasonally).

Kid-Friendly Hiking Trails in Halton

Hilton Falls Conservation Area

Address: 4985 Campbellville Rd, Burlington
Parking/Admission Info: $10.50 for adults, $7.25 for kids, $8.25 for seniors, kids under 5 free. No fee for parking.
Reservations Required?: No, but if you pre-purchase your admission online you’ll save some money.

What Makes It Great

This Halton Conservation Area hiking trail is another hidden gem that was new to us. It’s a little more out of the city centre, so I expected it to be a bit less crowded, and it was.

Hilton Falls is a great spot for hiking with kids. The terrain is rocky and rooty which makes it challenging for them. Ideal for balancing and working those large muscles! Parents were manoeuvring their strollers, but some parts were a little challenging. If you have a dog, they are welcome as long as they stay on a leash.

The waterfalls and ruins are picture-worthy and the rock formations are impressive. Gather at the fire pit by the waterfall with your hotdogs or marshmallows to cook over the fire! Ideally, visit in the fall so you can see a rushing waterfall. Keep your eyes peeled for bugs, frogs, snakes and small fish.

Feeling adventurous? You can mountain bike the trails in the nice weather, or cross-country ski in the winter. I really do love these all-season Conservation Halton kid-friendly trails in Ontario.

Tips For Hiking Here

Wear good shoes that lace up because some of the ground is uneven (#nature). There are port-a-potty style washrooms along the path if the urge arises. Bring hot dogs and marshmallows and impress the kids with lunch!

Bronte Creek Provincial Park

Address: 1291 Burloak Drive, Oakville
Parking/Admission Info: $21.00 per standard vehicle for day use. Buses and campers are extra.
Reservations Required?: No

What Makes It Great

We love the various kid-friendly hiking trails near me at Bronte Creek. Trails start at the parking lot and, ranging in length from 1 km to almost 3 km, wind along the top of Bronte Creek (always be careful when hiking and biking!) to cover all of the grounds. Bronte has a great leash-free section of the park as well.

Stroll through the forest and along a stream, where, in fall, you can fish for trout and salmon, among other fish. Remind kids to look for frogs, small snakes and bugs and also the Bronte Creek cows are always grazing in the fields. 

Follow the signs for the Gnome Trail and wander down a shaded path to the cutest community of painted gnome homes you ever did see. Bring a frisbee and play some disc golf. With a wheelchair and stroller-accessible trail, this is truly a family-friendly destination sure to please everyone.

Tips For Visiting

You can spend all day here, so bring a picnic lunch, snacks and water. Have some coins ready to get food for the goats who love to be hand-fed. Also bring some hand sanitizer for afterwards. Sunscreen always.

Crawford Lake, Halton Conservation

Parking/Admission Info: $10.50 for adults, $7.25 for kids, $8.25 for seniors, kids under 5 free. No fee for parking.
Reservations Required?: No but if you pay online you’ll save some money.

What Makes It Great

Crawford Lake is one of the most popular Conservation Halton hiking trails and for good reason! It is as full of great history as it is full of kid-friendly hiking trails. No matter what season you visit, you’re sure to love your experience.

Visit the reconstructed 15th-century Iroquoian village. The excavation between 1973 and 1987 uncovered 11 longhouses on the site and over 10 000 artifacts from the day-to-day lives of the Iroquoian people who once lived in the village. Three longhouses have been rebuilt to match archaeological findings.

Explore the village and learn about what daily life was like over 600 years ago through hands-on programs including simulated digs and fire-starting demonstrations. The Deer Clan Longhouse features exhibits that explore Indigenous art and culture.

After you’ve visited the Longhouse Village, walk the trail around Crawford Lake’s unique meromictic lake. With the boardwalk wrapping around the lake, Crawford Lake offers 5 great hikes for any season, ranging in length from 2 km to over 7 km. The boardwalk is stroller-friendly and a memorable kid-friendly trail.

Learn about species at risk as you follow along with the Hide and Seek Trail and view the enormous wooden carvings. The Hide and Seek Trail is located along the blue Crawford Lake Trail as you head toward the lake.

Lots of great photo ops and views, so bring a camera. Water, sunscreen and snacks always.

Cherry Hill Gate, Royal Botanical Gardens

What Makes It Great

When I think of hiking trails near me, Cherry Hill Gate is what comes to mind immediately. It’s on the border-ish of Burlington and Hamilton and owned by Royal Botanical Gardens. The kid-friendly trail is relatively smooth and stroller-friendly. The entrance takes you down a steep-ish hill, so if it’s wet out, be warned that it could be slippery.

Once you’ve made it down, keep your eyes peeled for the huge upturned tree stump and a ton of chipmunks. As you walk the trail, be on the lookout for beavers, swans, turtles, snakes, spiders, and a variety of birds.

Much of the trail is a wooden boardwalk so very walkable. Shade is scarce along the boardwalk so go in the mornings or evenings to beat the heat. For years this was our favourite locations for hiking with kids in Hamilton and Halton. It’s easy terrain and lots for them to see and do.

Tips For Hiking Here

Parts of the trail can get muddy after a rainfall. Strollers and wagons do well here. Bring the sunscreen, but leave the bird seed at home. RBG asks us not to feed any of the animals.

Cootes Paradise Trails at RBG (Princess Point / South Shore Trail)

What Makes It Great

You can access a variety of trails around the Cootes Paradise Marsh, and each has fabulous kid-friendly hiking to offer. We love the area near the old Hamilton Aviary (Caleb’s Walk, Ravine Road Trail) with its packed gravel trail and lots of shade. That’s the Westdale entrance noted above.

While walking the Princess Point route, take time to stop by The Fishway when it’s in operation. Think of it as a VIP access only gate to keep invasive carp at bay while local fish are spawning. They open and close it on a seasonal schedule and it’s worth seeing.

Joe Sam’s Park Has A Kid-Friendly Hiking Trail

Address: 752 Centre Rd, Hamilton

What Makes It Great

We initially visited for the excellent walking paths that take you through forests, over marshes and beside wetlands. The path was smooth and very stroller-friendly. The trail was wide, and ideal for wagons, smaller bikes and toddler exploring.

I cannot recommend this outing enough, especially to parents of young kids who need fresh air. There is also a playground right at the parking lot to entertain you before and/or after your walk. The loop is a nice size, it took us about 1.5 hours to complete, with lots of stopping for photos and exploring.

Tips For Visiting

You can bring small bikes and scooters too. Look for the bird feeders and bridges. We also saw wild turkeys! They’re big, and not very friendly, therefore keep your distance if you see them too. Stay and play at the park when you’re done. This is a popular spot for dog walks, too.

Tips for Hiking with Kids

• Bring water. I know it should be a given, but we have been known to forget, too!
• Bring snacks, too. No one wants to get hangry.
• If you’re going during spring and summer, bring bug repellent and sunscreen.
• Make sure everyone has comfy shoes. Flip-flops need not apply.
• If you want a little one to wander free, choose a location that isn’t a popular mountain biking location.
• Choose a less popular spot and discover a hidden gem.

Where Is Tansley Woods Park?

The Tansley Woods neighbourhood is situated centrally in Burlington and easily accessible from almost any main road or highway. So convenient to get to. There is a parking lot for those driving, and the grounds are stroller-friendly if you’re walking from the neighbourhood or from the Tansley Woods Community Centre.

Tansley Woods Playground

The playground at Tansley Woods is such a great structure for kids of all ages. It is spread out and has a little something for everyone. The playground is “woods-themed” and kids will love the little touches meant to make them feel like they’re exploring a forest. There are two playgrounds, one smaller toddler-sized playground and the larger, main playground structure. The toddler playground has a few slides and climbing options, very similar to the larger playground but created for pint-sized kiddos.

The rubberized play surface will come in handy as kids race around trying out all that the park has to offer. The main playground has a ground-level entry point that toddlers will love. It gives them easy access to chase their big kid friends onto the play structure.

Tansley Woods Park, as the name suggests, has a beautiful wooded area with a couple of walking and biking paths. Bring your scooters and strollers and wheelchairs because you’ll love the paved paths.

Are there Pickleball courts at Tansley Woods Park in Burlington?

Yes! Recently installed, and open to everyone, the pickleball courts at Tansley came during 2020 when we were all desperate for something new to do outdoors. You can pick up your own paddles and balls fairly inexpensively at Canadian Tire and Walmart, or if you’re a resident of Burlington, you can borrow them for free from the City parks and rec equipment lending library.

Pretty colours and sweet scents await you at these Ontario pick-your-own flower farms.  Gather your family together and head out to a local farm this spring.  Take photos of your kids as you pick your own tulips or other beautiful flowers. Spend quality time together and return home with a lovely arrangement to add extra cheer to your home.

A farm visit, whether it be a pick your own flower farm or a pick-your-own fruits and veggies farm, is a delight for the whole family. You can’t beat the scents and fresh air, and kids are always surprised to know where their produce comes from. It also makes for an easygoing date night.

JP Niagara Tulip Experience Pick Your Own Tulip Farm

What makes it great?

Surround yourself with 2 million flowers at this popular pick your own tulip farm in Niagara. It is so popular you need to book your visit or risk not being allowed in due to capacity. The JP fields are made up of 85 varieties of tulips to choose from. Each admission ticket includes 10 tulips and access to lots of photo opportunities. Additionally, tulips are $1.50 per tulip, which can be paid on-site with checkout. Admission prices range from $15-22 per person.

TASC Tulip Farm – Pick Your Own Tulips

What makes it great?

Tasc Tulip Farm opened in 2021 and has been bringing us millions of tulips since. The best time to pick tulips is late April to mid-May, though weather is the determining factor to the harvest. Enjoy 15 acres and 108 varieties of pick-your-own tulips, plus workshops and special events all spring and summer. Photographers, you can book a shoot here, too!

Admission and Dates

Admission prices range from $25-30 per person. Special events and general farm admission can be booked online. Reservations are required. Open daily starting early May, though weather will determine the official dates.

Windecker Woods Cut Your Own Flower Farm

Address: 215 Windecker Rd, Cayuga, Ontario
Flowers available: Different blooms every month from peonies to zinnias to dahlias
Reservations Required?: Not required

What makes it great?

The Windecker Woods Farm is open 7 days a week from dawn until dusk. Find the ‘Flower Pavilion’ and start from there. This farm offers a completely ‘Self Serve’ u pick flowers experience, therefore no need to find someone to get you started. They offer clippers and a basket to hold the flowers you’ve picked. Different blooms grow every month from peonies to zinnias as well as dahlias and more. Come in the fall for more fall blooms. Lastly, they ask you to look at the size of your bouquets and pay a fair price. Peonies are $3 per stem. Pay cash or e-transfer.

Admission and Dates

No admission to the farm. Open from June to the end of October, 7 days a week – dawn until dusk.

Andrews Scenic Acres

What makes it great?

Andrews Scenic Acres Pick Your Own Farm is 165 acres of beautiful escarpment countryside. ​Enjoy walking trails, wagon rides, a playground for kids, an animal corral, the straw mountain climb and a corn maze. Additionally, there are lots of great photo opportunities year-round. Their famous Dahlia & Sunflower fields bloom in August & September.

Admission and Dates

Admission is $17 for everyone over 5 years old, under 5 is free. Blooms are $2 each. Open daily May – November for full farm access. Dahlias and sunflowers are ready in the peak of summer.
