Raise your hand if fall activities are your favourite! The mild, sunny days are the best for being outside for long periods of time. The flavours and aromas (hello apple and cinnamon!) are a delight and there are sooo many things to do with kids near Hamilton, Halton and Niagara. We’ve been making this list and adding a few new faves to it each year. What is your favourite way to celebrate my favourite season?
Whether you have a baby who is happiest in the stroller, energetic preschoolers, elementary-age kids looking for an adventure or teens who are harder to impress, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season.
We’ve rounded up some of the best fall activities for families in Halton, Hamilton and Niagara, including free adventures, outdoor activities, indoor options for rainy days, farms, animals, festivals and Halloween fun.

Outdoor Fall Fun
If there’s one season that makes us want to get outside, it’s fall.
The cooler temperatures make hiking, biking and exploring much more comfortable than they can be in the middle of summer, while the changing leaves make even a familiar trail feel completely different.
Go looking for fall colours
You don’t have to travel hours north to see beautiful autumn scenery. There are plenty of places throughout Halton, Hamilton and Niagara to enjoy the changing leaves. Our fall-colour guide is a great place to start when you’re looking for the best local spots.
Travel The Gnome Road
Visit the gnomes and fairies on Gnome Road at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. It’s a little hidden village that will pique your little one’s curiosity!
Take a hike
Fall is also a fantastic time to explore some of the region’s trails. Families with younger children can stick to shorter, easier routes, while older kids and teens may be ready for something more challenging.
Have you ever seen a “Karst”? It’s a natural crater and you can explore them up close and in person when you take a walk through Eramosa Karst. It’s one of our all-time fave family hikes as voted by the kids!
Hilton Falls is the perfect mix of an easy hike and a gorgeous waterfall. It’s one of the lesser-visited conservation areas, and one of our favourites. You can even roast hotdogs and marshmallows over the fire! Read about our visit here.

Ride the Kelso Scenic Chairlift
Looking for a fall experience that’s a little different? Head to Kelso Conservation Area for a ride on the scenic chairlift. Instead of hiking uphill to see the Escarpment from above, families can sit back and enjoy the view as they make their way up. It’s particularly fun with older kids and teens, but younger children can enjoy it too.

Give Geocaching a Try
No matter where you’re located, there is a geocache nearby! Geocaching is a digital scavenger hunt that takes you to a hidden location with a “cache” to find. You can learn all about it and how to get started as a newbie here.
Indoor Fall Fun
Of course, fall also means rain. And sometimes the weather simply isn’t cooperating with your plans. That’s when it’s time to move the fun indoors.

There are plenty of local options for families, including indoor play centres, museums, science experiences, climbing, skating, bowling, children’s theatre and seasonal workshops. Younger kids might enjoy an indoor playground or a library program, while tweens and teens can try something more adventurous like climbing, escape rooms or skating.

Fall Festivals & Family Events
Fall is a busy time for community events across Halton, Hamilton and Niagara. You’ll find harvest celebrations, fall fairs, community festivals, markets, cultural events, food festivals, family fun days and plenty of smaller local events.

Pick-Your-Own Farms & Fall Farm Fun
Few things say “fall” quite like a visit to a local farm.
Depending on the farm and time of year, families can pick apples, choose the perfect pumpkin, wander through a corn maze, take a wagon ride, visit farm animals, play on farm-themed playgrounds and stock up on fresh fall treats.
Apple picking is particularly popular in September and early October, while pumpkin patches and Halloween-themed farm activities tend to take over later in the season.

Animal Adventures
Fall is also a great time to get up close with animals. A farm visit can be an easy introduction for toddlers and preschoolers, while older children might enjoy wildlife experiences, horseback riding or exploring local conservation areas looking for birds and other wildlife.

Looking for a unique activity that you really have to see with your own eyes? The Salmon Run is for you! Watch the salmon swim and spawn in Bronte Creek. You can see them both at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, Hidden Valley Park, or Lowville Park in Burlington.
Meet the Raptors and other Birds of Prey at Mountsberg Conservation Area. Peregrine falcons, Gryfalcons, Golden and Bald eagles, hawks, owls and more are on display for your view. My favourite is Jazz the barn owl! Reservations for Conservation Halton properties are not required, but you can save money on the gate fees by booking ahead.

Free Things to Do With Kids This Fall
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to enjoy fall in Halton, Hamilton and Niagara. In fact, some of the best fall adventures are simply about getting outside and enjoying the changing season.
Watch the lift bridge. It raises and lowers on schedule for the massive ships touring around Lake Ontario, and as needed for the tall sailboats. Very relaxing, and kind of a feat of massive, steel awesomeness.
One of the easiest options is to go for a fall-colour walk. There are plenty of parks, trails and conservation areas where families can enjoy the changing leaves. Younger children can turn the walk into a scavenger hunt, while older kids might enjoy taking photos of the best fall colours.
