Cherry Picking in Niagara Region

Cherry picking in Southern Ontario’s Niagara Region is a popular summer activity, offering families a chance to enjoy the outdoors and pick fresh, delicious cherries. Here are some key details and tips for a successful cherry picking trip:

When to Go Cherry Picking

  • Season: Cherry picking season in the Niagara Region typically runs from late June to early July. The exact timing can vary depending on the weather and growing conditions, so it’s always a good idea to check with local farms for the most accurate dates.

Types of Cherries

  • Sweet Cherries: These are the most common type found in the Niagara Region. They are usually available from late June to early July.
  • Sour (Tart) Cherries: These are typically available a bit later than sweet cherries, often in early to mid-July. Sour cherries are great for baking and preserves.

What to Bring

  • Containers: Many farms provide containers for picking, but it’s a good idea to bring your own sturdy containers or baskets, especially if you plan to pick a lot.
  • Sun Protection: The sun can be strong, so bring hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect yourself.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for walking and standing.
  • Water and Snacks: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated and snacks to keep everyone energized.
  • Bug Spray: Depending on the time of day and location, bugs can be an issue, so it’s wise to have some bug spray on hand.
  • Cash: Some farms may not accept credit or debit cards, so bring cash just in case.

Tips for Cherry Picking

  • Check Farm Policies: Each farm may have different rules and hours of operation, so check their websites or call ahead.
  • Arrive Early: The best cherries are often picked early in the day, so try to arrive early to get the best selection.
  • Pick Carefully: Handle cherries gently to avoid bruising them. Twist the cherries off the stems to avoid damaging the trees.
  • Sample Before Picking: Some farms allow you to taste a cherry or two before you start picking. This helps ensure you’re happy with the flavor and quality.
  • Storage: Cherries are best picked fresh and eaten soon after, but if you need to store them, keep them in a cool place and wash them just before eating.

Recommended Farms in the Niagara Region

  • Cherry Avenue Farms: Known for their large, sweet cherries, and they offer a great family-friendly experience.
  • Parkway Orchards: Offers a variety of cherries and other fruits, and has a beautiful setting for a family outing.
  • 20 Valley Harvest Farm: Offers a variety of cherries for picking along with other seasonal fruits and local products in their farm shop.

Before heading out, it’s always best to check the latest information on the farm’s website or give them a call to confirm the picking schedule and any special requirements or events they might have.

Enjoy your cherry picking adventure in the Niagara Region!

Nestled in the Aldershot community of Burlington lies a hidden gem, the Cherry Hill Gate. This nature reserve, part of the Royal Botanical Gardens lands, beckons outdoor fans, offering a perfect blend of wilderness, charming hiking trails, and a peaceful atmosphere. Come along with us as we delve into the wonders that await visitors at Cherry Hill Gate.

Like the outdoors? You will love these…

Where Is Cherry Hill Gate?

Located in Burlington, Ontario, Cherry Hill Gate is part of the Royal Botanical Gardens family of natural properties. Access to the trail is free and easy – two reasons we love this location so much. The entrance is on the north side of Plains Road, just west of the main RBG Centre. Free parking is available if you are a member, otherwise, you can pay for parking at the meters.

Wildlife Love Cherry Hill Gate

Cherry Hill is a sanctuary for wildlife, providing a harmonious habitat for many species. Keep an eye out for deer if you visit early in the morning or at dusk. It is not uncommon to encounter squirrels darting playfully or glimpse a fox silently surveying its surroundings. The delicate songs of warblers and the croaks of frogs create a symphony of nature’s vibrant chorus. For nature enthusiasts and photographers, Cherry Hill offers endless opportunities to observe and capture the beauty of these remarkable creatures in their natural habitat.

What kind of wildlife should you be on the lookout for? Birds, both in the trees and in Grindstone Creek, squirrels, chipmunks, and small (non-poisonous) snakes. In the creeks and ponds, watch for frogs and salamanders, and you may even see some water mammals like beavers!

Many visitors bring sunflower seeds, peanuts and other favourites to feed the birds and chipmunks.

Trails and Hiking

Cherry Hill Gate boasts an array of picturesque hiking trails that cater to various skill levels. From leisurely strolls to challenging hikes, there is something for everyone. The trails wind through lush woodlands, meandering alongside babbling brooks and captivating wildflower meadows. Nature lovers will relish the chance to explore the diversity of ecosystems present in this unique environment.

The Cherry Blossom Trail is ideal for a leisurely walk, guiding you through a beautiful forest adorned with vibrant cherry blossoms in the spring. If you seek a more challenging adventure, the Summit Trail offers breathtaking views from the top, rewarding hikers with panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape.

The trail is made up of packed gravel and sand, wooden boardwalks and bridges like the one below. It’s very stroller/wagon friendly. There is a steep hill at the very beginning of the trail, but as long as you hold on tight, you’ll be fine. wheelchairs may not find this area as easy to maneuver, though.

Look over the rails of the bridges as you pass and see if you can catch a glimpse of fish, ducks or even a beaver! There is so much life just below the surface.

Do You Recognise This Tree Stump?

You will see a number of families enjoying Cherry Hill when you visit. It is a top destination in all weather because it’s free, stroller and wagon-friendly, and keeps kids engaged with animal signings and climbing. One of the best views, in my opinion, is the upturned tree complete with a wild spray of roots. We get a photo every time we visit!

Cherry Hill Gate provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This is an excellent way to spend time in the fresh air with your family.

More Fun In The Water:

Burlington Beach

Address: 1100 Lakeshore Rd, Burlington, ON L7S 1A7 | website

My favourite thing about Burlington Beach is its proximity to my home! This is one of the most popular beaches near me, and we spend a lot of time here every season. This spot is a popular destination, so expect crowds on hot days.

Burlington Beach has a sandy shore and shallow water. You can walk far into the lake and the water won’t go higher than 4 feet.

Plan for a full day at Burlington Beach because they have washrooms, outdoor showers, a snack bar and a playground, too. With its popularity, parking can be difficult. Arrive early to get a parking spot, and if possible visit on a weekday.

You can find the parking prices and restrictions here.

Lakeside Park Beach, Port Dalhousie

Address: 1 Lakeport Rd, St. Catharines, ON, L2N 5B3 | website

This has always been one of our favourite beaches near Burlington and Hamilton. The shallow Lake Ontario water is great for younger kids to play in. The sand was warm and perfect for castle building and beach volleyball. They also have a snack bar in case you forget drinks. The beach itself is free to access, but you do need to pay for parking in the lot.

But possibly the best feature is the working antique carousel at Lakeside Park Beach in Port Dalhousie. It’s over 100 years old and each ride is only 25 cents! This is a staple on the ActiveParents summer bucket list!

Turkey Point

Address: 194 Turkey Point Rd, Turkey Point, N0E 1T0 | website

Not exactly one of the beaches near Burlington, but this one comes highly recommended so we added it. Turkey Point is an Ontario Provincial Park and it’s open May 2, 2025 to October 26, 2025. It is a 2km wide beach boasting beautiful sand and ideal conditions for busy families. Turkey Point doesn’t have lifeguards on duty.

Long Point

Long Point is another Provincial Park that we highly recommend. I think it’s one of the best beaches near Burlington. Lots of families raved about it and we finally made it there last summer.

The beach is massive and clean, and the Lake Erie water was great. The parking lot fills up quickly, and people come and go all day long. Street parking is also available in various locations. I took this photo below when we were there, and although it looks busy, there was a ton of space. We didn’t have anyone within 10 feet of us the whole time.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park in Oakville is just one of the 340 Ontario Parks. We visit multiple times a year in every season because there’s always something fantastic to do at Bronte Creek. Here are some highlights of what you can expect when you visit. If you enjoy this park and playground you’ll want to explore these playgrounds too.

The Children’s Play Barn

Your admission to the day use area includes unlimited play at the play barn. Kids will love that they get to run, jump, swing and slide inside a real barn. Open spring, summer and fall.

Springtime on the Farm

Bronte Creek is home to many animals including cows, goats, chickens, peacocks, sheep, rabbits and more! There are animals around throughout most seasons. Visit in the spring when you can meet baby animals that were born earlier that year.

Most animal experiences are open in spring, summer and fall.

meeting farm animals at Bronte Creek Provincial Park

Harvest and Winter Festivals

Visit the Spruce Lane Farmhouse on the fourth weekend in September for the Harvest Festival. Pick up a pumpkin and enjoy yummy snacks like kettle corn and freshly pressed cider. Fall is a great time to visit the animals and take a wagon ride over to the play barn.

Winter at Bronte Creek brings on the Victorian Christmas preparations, games and food of the festive season. Enjoy crafts, stories, treats and games. It’s certain to get you into the spirit of the season.

Check out the Friends of Bronte Creek website to see if there are any special events happening.

Walk The Gnome Road

The Gnome Road is a great reason to visit. It’s home to little wooden houses decorated like gnome homes. Follow along a very stroller-friendly walking path just at the tree line near the play barn and yellow playground.

There is a good tree canopy as well, so some shade for anyone who needs a break. Open all year.

The gnome road at bronte creek

Bronte Creek Swimming Pool Closed

Bronte Creek Pool has been a family favourite for years because of its size and beach entry. The park has confirmed that it will remain closed for now. Personally I don’t see it reopening anytime soon, unfortunately.

See The Salmon Run – Don’t Miss This!

Fall is the time of year when the salmon migration runs through Bronte Creek Park. We first saw them in 2020, and it was honestly magical. Nature controls the migration, so there is no specific time to see them. They generally make their way to spawning grounds in September/October.

Directions to a viewing area. Park in Lot F, and walk toward Spruce Lane Farm. Behind the barns and the cow pasture, there is a trail marker for the Half Moon Valley Trail. When you get to a fork in the trail, go left, which is trail 4.

Tip: Bring appropriate footwear and a camera. Note that this trail has stairs.

Bronte Creek Animals

When we visited in the fall, we thought the barns we all empty for the season. We were pleasantly surprised to see the cows were out and so were these massive rabbits!

Bronte Creek Park rabbits and animals

The Old Oak Tree

We read about the great White Oak tree, which started growing in 1685. I was surprised to learn it is one of the biggest oak trees in Ontario.

So Many Playgrounds!

Kids will have fun at the playgrounds and play structures as you make your way through the park.

Easy Walking Trails

Bronte has stroller-friendly trails that are easy for kids. You can walk by the creek, among the tall trees, or on the gravel paths that go all around the park.

While you’re walking at this Oakville Park, look for the unusual cylindrical buildings and picnic shelters with real wood-burning fireplaces and sinks. Lots of opportunities for using your imaginations, and a ton of green space to run off all that energy kids have.

Tip: Bring lunch or dinner and have a picnic.

Even More Reasons To Love bronte Creek

Bronte is a park that offers educational programs like the Maple Syrup Festival, Ghost Walks, Camper Halloween, and Victorian Christmas. It’s a popular destination for classes and families looking for interactive experiences throughout the year.

Bring your furry friend and let them enjoy a little fresh air freedom at the dedicated leash-free section of the park.

Disc golf is a challenging and fun activity in nice weather. Bring your own frisbees, stand at the marker, and throw. Your goal is to land your disk in or as close as possible to the hole. Perfect for some fresh air fun, and no experience necessary.

Come in the winter months and enjoy cross-country skiing and tobogganing with the family.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park camping is easy and ideal for first-timers because if things don’t go as planned, you’re not far from home. I know many families who have gotten their “camping legs” at Bronte. You can tent or RV camp from May through October, or stay at one of the park’s yurts. For camping fees check here.

Tips for Your Visit

Comfort stations include washroom facilities with flush toilets and handwashing facilities. They are near the Playbarn, Spruce Lane Farmhouse and various points around the park.

You can hike and bike on the trails.

Bring your binoculars because we permit and encourage bird watching.

Bronte has picnic benches all throughout the park, so pack a picnic or snack spread and dine al fresco.

Admission and Park Memberships

Bronte Creek Provincial Park offers a variety of price deals and discounts. Prices vary for everything from walk-in day use to RV camping. You can find them all here on their official website.

Dofasco Waterjet Plaza (aka Spencer Smith Park Splash Pad)

Located at 1340 Lakeshore Road

The Spencer Smith Park Splash Pad is possibly Burlington’s most famous spot in the summer. The picturesque location is frequented by locals and tourists from surrounding cities. The 30 waterjets spray intermittently and at different heights for kids to laugh and run through, while parents can sit on the perimeter in the sun or shade and watch their kids. The Spencer Smith Park splash pad is free to use, although parking is sometimes tricky and can cost you depending on the time of day you visit. The playground is right beside when you need a change of pace. Washrooms and a snack bar are just inside the building adjacent to the pad.

2205 Mount Forest Drive.

Recently renovated and even more fun for families! Mountainside Pool now offers a corkscrew side and a climbing wall that drops you right into the deep end of the pool! Hidden Valley Park Splash Pad

Located at 1137 Hidden Valley Road.

This splash park in Burlington is one of our favourites. Visitors can easily spend the entire day enjoying the playground, the spray pad and the picnic space. Water jets shoot up from the pad that is surrounded by a park, greenspace, Hidden Valley Creek, and a covered gazebo perfect for a picnic. Plenty of other picnic tables around the park. The park is also home to the Burlington Model Railway Club. Ample parking and washrooms on site.

Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm – How It Came To Be

Just a short history of this sweet farm… Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm was created by Harry “Happy” Rolph when he build a bird sanctuary on his property. Happy, along with his wife Jen, built several ponds on the property to help attract more birds, and eventually grew to attract thousands of birds annually to the property.

When the couple decided to retire in the 70s, the sanctuary was purchased by the Province, City and Niagara Conservation Authority, and eventually was bought by the City of St. Catharines. To honour his work, the location was renamed Happy Rolph Bird Sanctuary in 1974.

What Is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is a sport that involves throwing a flying disc or Frisbee into a basket or target, similar to traditional golf where players hit a ball into a hole. The objective is to complete a course with the fewest number of throws possible. The course is typically laid out over a large outdoor area, often in a park or wooded area, and can consist of 9 or 18 holes, each with a designated starting point and target.

Players must navigate various obstacles, such as trees or other natural terrain, in order to successfully complete each hole. Disc golf is a popular recreational activity and there are many courses near us. It’s family-friendly, gets you in the fresh air and makes for a great date night idea.

Twin Valley Zoo – formerly called Brantford Twin Valley Zoo – ranks high on the list of must-visit destinations for so many reasons. Read on for those reasons, plus some helpful hints for your day with the animals.

Love seeing animals? Click here to find all of our area zoos, sanctuaries and animal experiences.

Welcome To Twin Valley Zoo

Brantford Twin Valley Zoo opened its doors in 1991 and offers 25 acres of native and exotic animals from April through October. Twin Valley Zoo is perfectly sized for families because it offers the ability to see the entire park in one visit.

Some of our photos are from our visit in 2019 where we got a behind-the-scenes tour.

When you arrive, the zoo greeters are some of the cutest and most cuddly little goats I’ve ever seen. If you watched my Instastories, you’ll see how quickly Cotton and I fell in love.

tips for Feeding the goats (From An Almost Expert)

  • Get your pellets from the machine, then MOVE AWAY. It’s like a dinner bell for them, so back away once you’ve got your handful.
  • Spread out, there’s lots of space, and your feeding experience will be a better one if you have your own space
  • Feed them low, and they won’t jump. It took me a few minutes to realize this, but it’s true.
  • Take pictures, because the cuteness is too much!

Explore The Zoo

Once you’ve had your goat fix, you’re ready to wander the zoo and see all of the local and exotic animals that call Brantford Twin Valley Zoo home. Be ready, because there are over 400 animals here!

Here’s one tip I cannot stress enough – ask all the questions! Your kids will have questions and so will you, so make sure you ask the staff. They’re all around the park, and so friendly and helpful. They’re truly passionate about the animals and always took the time to answer our queries.

My kids wanted to know what the animals did in the winter months, why certain animals could live with others (like tortoises) and why others couldn’t, and how the animals came to live at the Zoo.

Getting up close with the wildlife at Brantford Twin Valley Zoo

The Perfect Variety of Wildlife

My girls love the ring-tailed lemurs and the rough lemurs. Watching them swing and jump and put on a show for the crowds is fantastic. Plus, their cuteness is off the charts.

You absolutely MUST ask Jennifer to teach you about the wolf pack. Her wolf howl is out of the world, and the way Storm, Mogli and Maverick respond will blow you away. Learning so much about such a secretive species was a highlight for me.

Feeding the lemurs during our special tour

Listen For “The Big Cats”

The big cats always get so much of my attention. I truly appreciate how lucky we are to be able to see them up close and learn about their life in the wild and what brought them into captivity. Their personalities are all different and watching them interact with each other and the staff is great.

Make sure to listen for the lion’s roaring and tiger’s “chuffing”. Their communication skills are wild!

Did You Know?

If you need a shady break, why not play at the free playground? A great spot to rest, eat and regroup.

BYO food, too! Small treats and snacks are available onsite, but you’re encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and eat at one of the many picnic tables throughout the Zoo.

Be sure to make time for the Animal Shows that happen every 2 hours. They’re a great way for kids to ask questions and see smaller animals up close and personal.

It’s great for grandparents. We saw tons of inter-generational families, so invite them to join you! There’s plenty of seating all throughout the park, and shady spots, which means it’s perfect for me too 🙂

Tips for Your Visit to Twin Valley Nature Park

Bring your strollers and wagons, the grounds are very wheel friendly.

Pack some bug deterrent if you’re going to take the Nature trail, on humid days the mosquitos are hungry.

The animal food vending machines take quarters, so I’d plan for at least one dollar’s worth per kiddo (goats and deer can be fed)

Take our word for it, Brantford’s Twin Valley Zoo is one attraction you have to visit. And when you go, share your favourite part of your day with us!

Admission, Hours and More

  • Children 2-14 years old = $12.50 (kids under 2 are free with a paying adult)
  • Adults 15-65 years old = $24.00
  • Seniors 65+ years old, Special Needs visitors and their Support Staff = 20.00 each
  • Season Passes are available, too! Find pricing on the Brantford Zoo website.

Great news for fans of African Lion Safari – they open Saturday, May 3rd for the 2025 season and have lots of WILD fun in store for you and your family! We have the inside scoop on what you can expect when you visit this summer, updates on the new African Lion Safari ticket prices plus some tips and important info for visitors.

2025 Season highlights

African Lion Safari is Canada’s Original Safari Adventure. They maintain a collection of over 1,000 exotic birds and animals comprised of over 100 different species. What animal is your favourite? Will you giggle at the silly monkeys and lemurs or be entranced watching the long-legged giraffes stroll their habitat?

Drive Through Game Reserve – One of my earliest memories of African Lion Safari was when we saw cars driving through the game reserves getting oh-so-close to the animals roaming around. It was like nothing I had ever seen before! The drive-through is 9 km long and it takes you up close through 7 large Game Reserves featuring Nairobi Sanctuary, Simba Lion Country, Timbavati Lion Country, Wankie Bushland Trail, Rocky Ridge Veldt, Australasia and The Americas. You stay in your vehicle, driving at a very slow pace, and you get to witness animals roam their territory.

Take The “Nature Boy “Train – Hop on the train for a 15-minute ride through 16 hectares of animals and birds. A trip is included in your admission.

Climb Aboard The “African Queen” – Take a boat ride to enjoy a pleasant tour around Water Safari Lake. The informative captain will take you on a cruise around the islands and point out exotic primates including the White-handed gibbon, Ring-tailed lemur, Black-handed Spider monkeys and Robust Black Spider monkeys. Bird dwellers include the Marabou stork and the Pink-backed pelican. The tour is about 15 minutes and is included in your admission.

African Lion Safari’s Waterpark Splash Pad

The splash pad, Misumu Bay Wetplay, is more than just a splash pad at African Lion Safari! As a matter of fact, this may be the highlight of your visit! I have multiple friends who buy season passes strictly for this amazing waterpark. The waterpark is included in your admission and while you’re there cool down under the dumping bucket or slip down the water slides. Enjoy sprinklers and water shooters and fountains, too!

Cheer, Gymnastics or Kids Dance Class Near Me: How Do They Differ?

Dance, cheer, and gymnastics are excellent activities that develop skills like coordination and athleticism through movement. Each has its own distinct characteristics:

  1. Dance: Dance is a series of creative movements. Kids’ dance classes near me offer many styles, like ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap, and more. Dance often uses storytelling, music, rhythm, and planned steps to share feelings, ideas, and stories.
  2. Cheer: Cheerleading is a team sport that mixes dance, gymnastics, and stunts. It started as a way to cheer on sports teams but has become a sport on its own. Cheerleaders do routines with jumps, tumbling, chants, cheers, and sometimes acrobatic stunts. It takes teamwork, coordination, strength, and flexibility.
  3. Gymnastics: Gymnastics is a sport where you perform movements that need strength, flexibility, balance, and skill. There are different types, like artistic, rhythmic, trampoline, and acrobatic gymnastics. In artistic gymnastics, athletes use equipment like the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor. Rhythmic gymnastics focuses on graceful moves using ribbons or hoops. Trampoline gymnastics includes flips and tricks on a trampoline, while acrobatic gymnastics has routines with partners doing balances, flips, and throws.

While all three activities involve movement and athleticism, dance emphasizes expressive movement and choreography, cheer combines dance with chants and stunts, and gymnastics focuses on performing precise movements and routines on various apparatus.

Are There Animals At Springridge Farm?

Oh yeah, there are! Springridge is home to goats, rabbits and chickens. The goats have a very cool enclosure with a spiral staircase and their own red barn. The rabbits are sooooo soft and those silly chicks are hilarious to watch and feed. Bring your animal lover to visit.

Bring a few quarters so you can buy some feed for the animals.

Reader question: Are pets/dogs allowed at Springridge Farm? Service dogs are welcome, but all other pets should stay home for this trip.

what else is there to do?

In addition to the animals at the farms, Springridge is home to some great kid-friendly activities. At the top of Victoria’s must-do list was riding the pedal tractors. Located in a big open-air barn with a paved floor, kids can hop on and off brightly coloured tractors and peddle around at high speeds (well, as fast as they can pump their legs!).

Also, hop on the Farm Hoppers – those inflatable animals that kids sit on and bounce around on. Then wander over to the giant pipe slides and little to the vibrating giggles and kids of all ages make their way down over the corrugated ride. Make time in your visit to watch the singing chicken show, too. Lots of laughs!

Wagon Rides and Escarpment Lookout

A visit to the farm wouldn’t be complete without a ride in their big, red wagon. Rides are included in your admission and run hourly starting at 10:30 am until 4:30 pm on weekdays, and on weekends the tractor runs continuously from 10 am till 4 pm. The ride is non-stop and takes about 15 minutes. You’ll get a tour of the farm and some beautiful views of the escarpment.

Speaking of the views. make to make the trek up to the Escarpment Lookout. It’s a workout, but you won’t regret it! On a clear day, you can see the CN Tower!

tips for visiting Springridge farm

  • Remember your camera – so many cute photo opportunities
  • Bring some quarters so you can get some animal feed for the goats, rabbits and chickens
  • Food is available to purchase on-site, so don’t bring your own to the farm. Snack in the car if you need to
  • Pack your hand sanitiser as there is a lot to touch
  • Lots of tables and seating
  • Plan to be here for a few hours, and for kids to have a blast!

The Greenhouse is located inside the grounds of Gage Park and playground and creates a warm, tropical oasis right in the heart of The Steel City. The Gage Park Greenhouse is one of our favourite free things to do in Hamilton because the kids and adults alike love visiting.

The greenhouse is 14,000 square feet and is home to subtropical plants, dozens of palms, and unique species like the corpse flower. It is named that because its scent is similar to that of a rotting corpse (no thank you!). You can see photos and videos of the Gage Park corpse flower here.

What You’ll See At The Gage Park Greenhouse

Expect to spend about 30 minutes to 1 hour here, depending on how much your kids like plants! Be sure to direct their attention to the ponds. Why? Because that is where they’ll catch a glimpse of turtles and fish! The turtles are our absolute favourite part of the greenhouse. You can catch them swimming or catching some sun on one of the rocks. The large and small fish love to make their way from one end of the pond to the other. The pond is large and spans almost the entire length of the greenhouse. Keep your ears perked up for the sounds of a waterfall, too!

If you like tropical climates in the city, you’ll also love the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory.

7 Drivers Ed Providers to Get Your Teenager Driving

If you have a 16 year old in your home they may be itching to get behind the wheel and driving the family vehicle.  Ontario has a 2-step process.  After completing the written test, many families turn to approved driving instructors for in class and in car driving lessons, but where to turn?

This is just a short list of program providers, so if you’re looking for even more options, click here for Government of Ontario approved driving schools.

Tips From A Parent When Picking A Driving School

My oldest can now drive, and it’s the best. But it was a bumpy road to get here. Driving school is expensive and time consuming, especially for teens eager to get out on the road.

My first tip is to DO YOUR RESEARCH when it comes to choosing a driving program. Talk to people who have used the service and ask if they remember their instructor’s name. Instructors make all the difference, and a bad one can ruin your time in the car. Yes, they should all be teaching the same skills, but they’re not unfortunately. We had to navigate some murky waters and I had to speak up more than once when we were disappointed in the service we were getting.

Secondly, speak up when something is off. Many centre owners don’t know what happens in class or in the car, and they would (probably) appreciate knowing if an employee is harming their reputation with poor service. Communicate with your kids regarding what to expect from their lessons and what to question. This is a big responsibility!
