We can help you spoil those moms in your life with our inspirational list of things to do on Mother’s Day.
]]>Mother’s Day is fast approaching and it’s one more great opportunity to celebrate the mother figures in your life! We can help you spoil those moms in your life with our inspirational list of things to do on Mother’s Day. Brunch, spas, local attractions, Mother’s Day events and more. Some moms like quiet time at home with their loved ones and some want to be celebrated loud and proud, therefore we put together suggestions for great things to do on Mother’s Day with the moms you love the most.
We live in a perfect location for celebrating Mother’s Day with the important moms in our lives. Below you’ll find recommendations for indoor and outdoor places to take the one you love, as well as great spots for a delicious Mother’s Day brunch. Our calendar links you to the biggest list of Mother’s Day events in the area.
May weather can be unpredictable so play it safe and plan an indoor activity with Mom. Here are some suggestions from the moms in our community.
Visit Gage Park Greenhouse – The tropical greenhouse in Gage Park is like a mini-vacation and, therefore it must be an ideal destination for moms who love gardening, plants and flowers. In addition to the hundreds of plants and flowers, look for the koi fish and turtles swimming about. Entry is free, and donations are appreciated. A top-rated spot to visit on Mother’s Day in Hamilton. Read about our visit to the greenhouse.
The Art Gallery of Hamilton is one of our fave spots to visit with all 3 generations of our family. School-age kids will love the exhibits on the 2nd floor and there will be lots of discussion about that cool VW Bus! As a result, the multiple floors of art and installations will keep your eyes entertained all Mother’s Day in Hamilton! Read about our latest visit to the AGH.
Royal Botanical Gardens – RBG is home to beautiful indoor gardens that will convince you you’re on vacation. You can visit the Rock Garden or their other beautifully maintained grounds. RBG is a long-time favourite of our “Gramma” and I think yours will love visiting on Mother’s Day. Read about our latest visit to the RBG.
The Art Gallery of Burlington is home to various exhibits in an assortment of mediums, however, it’s very family-friendly, too. Make sure to see the space dedicated to impromptu creativity, complete with book nooks for reading. The gallery is wheel-friendly and spacious. There is a small greenhouse with a relaxing water feature. Large windows make the gallery bright and airy. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated. ABG website.
More Indoor Things To Do on Mother’s Day
Take Mom To The Movies at a local, indie movie theatre like The Westdale in Hamilton, Film.ca in Oakville, Landmark Cinema in Jacksons Square, the 100-year-old Playhouse Cinema, or at CineStarz in Downtown Burlington. Many have special screenings as part of their Mother’s Day events. In addition to a smaller, more intimate theatre size, you also enjoy lower ticket prices, but the concessions and quaintness are big big big!
Get Creative – Got an artsy mama? Take them to paint some pottery at a local paint-your-own-pottery studio. It’s a great activity for families, and she’ll get a mini-masterpiece to remember the special day by. Find a local PYOP studio here.
Outdoor Places Moms Love Visiting
Royal Botanical Gardens is home to some of the most stunning gardens and green spaces in southern Ontario and how lucky are we to live nearby! If the weather plays in your favour, take Mom and the whole family to walk through the grounds and see the magnolia trees in bloom and the beginnings of the cherry blossoms! Bring your camera and pre-book your parking because this destination is popular.
Spencer Smith Park is a popular destination in Burlington. Stroll the paved, wheel-friendly waterfront trail all the way to the lift bridge, check out the cherry blossom trail and enjoy the playground if you’ve got little kids with you. You’ll find great lunch and dinner options, for instance, Mother’s Day brunch at Spencer’s at the Waterfront, and lots of coffee and dessert shops, too! Parking is free on weekends and there’s lots of it in the parking complex at Lakeshore and Locust Street. Find shops and restaurant details here.
Play Some Mini Golf – Mini Putt is a perfect sport because it requires very little talent and causes lots of laughs! Some of the best local courses are open for the season, find them here.
Nature Walk and Talk – Take your favourite mom on a walk, stroll or hike in Hamilton or Burlington. We have a list of family-friendly spots to walk to help you choose the trail that suits your group the best. Click here and grab your shoes!
The University of Guelph Arbouretum makes for a lovely stroll and a peaceful way to spend time outdoors. Kids will love the natural playground, and gravel paths make it easy for walking. Above all, be sure to enjoy the Japanese Garden and the native trees.
Visit A Local Garden Centre
Mom will love anything you give her, but why not take her to the garden centre and enjoy a few hours in a plant lover’s paradise? I had no idea this was one of the most popular Mother’s Day events and outings! We asked our friends with green thumbs which garden centres are worth a visit, and here’s what they recommended:
Burlington’s Centro Market is home to a garden centre and farmers market, and the market opens for the season on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2024.
Holland Park in Dundas is a popular spot to find plants, flowers, and fresh-made arrangements.
Visit Harper’s Garden Centre in Ancaster. Their website boasts 15,000 unique items to choose from!
Winona Gardens is a local favourite and a 3rd generation family-owned garden centre.
Terra has greenhouses in Milton, Burlington, Hamilton and Waterdown and is a trusted garden centre for many.
These Top-Rated Restaurants Are Perfect For A Mother’s Day Brunch
We check with local foodies, tourism and of course, Moms, to find their favourite brunch spots for Mother’s Day and any day worth celebrating. These delightful spots will surely book up quickly for Mother’s Day, so as soon as you find one you like, call and make a reso. Above all, enjoy yourselves.
Best Brunch In Oakville:
The Crepe Kitchen offers you over 40 types of savoury and sweet crepes served all day long.
Community Resto is a vegan staple in Oakville, but even for meat eaters like me, it was a delicious treat for the tastebuds. Waffles, pancakes, breakfast burritos and more.
Harpers Landing has never disappointed me! Their brunch menu boasts every delicacy you can imagine from eggs benny to huevos rancheros and cheesecake stuffed french toast (heaven!)
Burlington’s Best Brunches
Pur & Simple is a frequent stop for my “ladies who brunch” group because we’ve never had a bad brunch here. There is something for every dietary need and their food is made fresh and served hot. I recommend their artisan French toast and their skillet breakfasts. And of course, a mimosa to celebrate!
Spencer’s at the Waterfront is famous for their weekend brunch and it’s plain to see why. Between their beautiful decor, the stunning lake views and their menu offering multiple types of eggs Benedict, the timeless steak and eggs and even a chocolate cake waffle!
Russell Williams speaks my breakfast language! One of the longest-operating restaurants in Burlington offers large portions of homestyle cooking to write home about!
Best Brunch In Hamilton:
Ancaster Mill serves a 5-star brunch every weekend. Treat yourself (and mom) to this fine-dining destination, housed in an old stone flour mill overlooking a waterfall.
Shy’s Place was mentioned numerous times to us by our community. Shy’s Place is located in a historic Dundas home-turned-restaurant. They also have an outdoor, year-round patio.
Motel Restaurant is your choice if you love an Insta-worthy restaurant with food to match the beauty of the decor. Decadent breakfast items are taken to the next level plus some naughty name cocktails to sip.
Electric Diner is definitely a place after my own heart with its eclectic 80’s decor and home cooking-style menu of classics, with a kick.

]]>Taking the kids to a drive-in movie is a classic memory maker. This list curates your options for drive-in movie theatres in Hamilton, Oakville, Niagara and more. You have a variety of options to choose from.
An evening at the drive-in is an evening everyone can enjoy. It’s a long-time favourite date night idea no matter your age. Watch a double feature (and occasionally a triple feature) of your favourite classic movies or a hot new release. I love that it’s cozier than a typical theatre and a little more private.
Kids love the drive-in theatre experience because it’s exciting and out of the box. There’s nothing better than watching a movie in your jammies while eating popcorn in the comfort of your vehicle.
This 3-screen theatre in Oakville shows some amazing double-feature movie combinations. Pre-buy your tickets to secure your admission. You can also buy tickets at the box office using cash, credit and debit. When the weather is great, expect to see screenings sell out.
The concession stand offers in-car food delivery. Enjoy the typical treats plus burgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers and a ton of different combo deals.
Prices: Start at $14 per person, with a car load ringing in at $25.00. Kids under 5 are free.
Address: 59 Green Mountain Rd East, Stoney Creek | Website
With 3 screens, each showing a double feature, the movie selection is sure to please everyone in your group. The concession stand at this Hamilton drive-in movie theatre also sells deep-fried pickles, pretzels and funnel cake! Make the evening easy on yourself and opt for their in-car food delivery option.
Starlight is a popular destination on the weekends. Arrive at least an hour before showtime to get a great spot and get your snacks before the movie starts. You can pre-buy your tickets online or pay cash, debit or credit card at the box office when you arrive.
Prices: Start at $14 per person, with a car load ringing in at $25.00. Kids under 5 are free.
This theatre reopened under the same ownership as 5-Drive In and the Starlight. That means you can expect the same great service and delicious treats at the concession stand. This location has 4 screens, each showing a double feature every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.
Prices: Start at $13 per person, with a car load costing $25.00. Kids under 5 are free.
Come out and enjoy blockbuster features under the stars every weekend in Guelph. Mustang Theatre has 1 large, outdoor screen that shows 2 movies each night. You can sit outside in the fresh air or in the comfort of your own vehicle.
The box office opens at 7:30 and films are shown Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Concessions are always available and range from movie night staples to cheeseburgers and poutine.
Prices: General Admission is $13.00, Kids 6-12 Years Old are $5.00 each, and 5 years and younger are FREE! Or visit on Carload Sundays and pay $20 for up to 7 people in one vehicle (excluding long weekends).

]]>Oakville Summer Camps With Single Day Booking
https://activeparents.ca/oakville-summer-camps-with-single-day-booking/
Thu, 18 Apr 2024 13:41:25 +0000https://activeparents.ca/?p=68933Summer camps are a great way for kids to stay active, learn new skills, and have fun during the summer months. If you're located in Burlington and are looking for summer camp options for your children, you're in luck!
]]>Opting to book individual days for your kids at camp rather than committing to a full week provides flexibility and liberty. This method empowers you to customize activities according to your child’s passions and energy levels daily. It opens doors to spontaneity, letting you seize unforeseen chances or events.
Moreover, booking day by day prevents wasted days when your child might not be up for participating or when other responsibilities crop up. This approach nurtures independence in children as they grasp planning and managing their time. Ultimately, it guarantees a more pleasurable and tailored summer break for both parents and children.
There are many reasons why parents (and kids) may prefer booking single days of summer camp. Here are a few of the most common ones:
Flexibility: Parents appreciate the ability to choose specific days for their child to attend summer camp, accommodating their family’s schedule without committing to a full week.
Personalization: Booking single days allows parents to tailor their child’s camp experience to their interests, ensuring they participate in activities they enjoy.
Cost-effectiveness: Opting for individual days can be more economical for families, as they only pay for the days their child attends rather than a full week.
Reduced Commitment: Some parents prefer the flexibility of booking single days as it minimizes their commitment, allowing them to test the camp environment or accommodate varying summer plans.
Convenience: Booking individual days makes it easier to manage conflicting appointments or events, ensuring their child can still participate in summer camp while accommodating other activities.

Hotels With Awesome Indoor Pools and Waterslides (Almost As Good As An Indoor Waterpark)
You don’t have to go to a full-fledged waterpark to find wet and wild fun! We love these hotels with great waterslides and added family-favourite features.
Chelsea Hotel in Toronto
This hotel is beautiful and family-friendly. Their heated pool is perfect for both kids and adults to enjoy. Plus, their Corkscrew Waterslide loops outside the hotel! You have to be a guest at the hotel to swim. Pool and waterslide hours are limited right now, so check their website for open dates and times.
The hotel also has a teen lounge with old-school arcade games, flat-screen televisions, a foosball table and a pool table. Adults are invited to enjoy it too! Also check out the Kids Centre, complete with dress-up, educational and artistic activities to keep kids having fun.
We have stayed here with kids and without and it is an ideal hotel for anyone. Dance: Dance is a performing art form characterized by purposefully selected sequences of creative movement. Children’s dance classes near me include a wide range of dance styles such as ballet classes, contemporary, jazz, hip hop classes, tap classes, and many others. Dance often involves storytelling, rhythm, music, and choreography to convey emotions, ideas, and narratives.
Cheer: Cheerleading is a team activity that combines elements of dance, gymnastics, and stunts. It originated as a way to support sports teams and has evolved into a competitive sport of its own. Cheerleaders perform synchronized routines that include jumps, tumbling, chants, cheers, and sometimes acrobatic stunts. Cheerleading requires teamwork, coordination, strength, and flexibility.

Step into one of the climate-controlled gondolas and enjoy a leisurely ride high above the city. Kids will love the panoramic vistas and the chance to see Niagara Falls from a new perspective.

Kids can explore the lush rainforest setting, watch colourful birds in flight, and even have close encounters with parrots and other friendly feathered friends. The course is beautifully themed, with waterfalls, lush landscaping, and challenging holes. It’s a great activity for the whole family to enjoy together.
Ride The Rollercoaster: House of Frankenstein’s rollercoaster sits 4 stories off the ground and is full of thrills and speed! Riders sit in coffins on this monstrously great ride. It’s Canada’s only rooftop coaster!
More Tips For Visiting Niagara Falls With Kids
Book A Room With A Falls View. Hotels are a little more expensive in the heart of the area, but the views are definitely worth it, especially if this is your first visit. At night, the falls are illuminated and look gorgeous from high up in your hotel room. Every night, from Friday, May 19th until Monday, October 9th fireworks light up the night sky at 10 pm.
Eat Outside The Core. Like all popular tourist destinations, prices can be higher when you eat right in Clifton Hill and Niagara Falls core. We love taking a short drive or walking to eat kist outside the busy area. Our favourite is The Flying Saucer Restaurant because of its kitch-y theme and good old home cooking. I recommend the meatloaf!
Bring Your Own Food. One way we save money is by bringing our own picnic lunches and eating on the lawns of the Niagara Parks. The scenery is lovely and the price is right.
Be Ready To Walk. You can drive, but the congestion at the base of Clifton Hill isn’t worth it if you ask me. Tie up your walking shoes and bring a wagon or stroller for the kids. There is so much to see that you won’t mind walking, but you will tally up a lot of steps!
Parking Tip!
Thanks to my friend Alison, I just found out about the Niagara Parks Parking Pass. It’s $45 and gives 2 vehicles 1 year of parking! You can use it to park at a variety of local attractions, gardens, wineries and more!
Niagara Falls offers a long list of unique attractions and activities that the whole family will love. From the breathtaking power of the falls to interactive museums, thrilling rides, and unique wildlife encounters, there’s something for every child to enjoy. So, plan your family trip to Niagara Falls, and get ready for an adventure-packed experience that your kids will cherish forever.

Sherkston Shores is a popular family vacation destination, and one we hadn’t been to before 2023! It is a spot that I’ve had recommended to me many times by annual visitors, and I’m so glad I got to visit. It’s a family-friendly resort located on Lake Erie in the town of Sherkston, near Port Colbourne, Ontario which is a quick 90 minute drive from Burlington. Read on to learn more, and hear my thoughts on our visit.
Where To Stay at Sherkston Shores
Sherkston Shores by Sun Retreats offers a variety of ways to stay and enjoy a few days or weeks on the grounds. My family was invited to spend a September weekend at Cozy in the Quarry, an AirBnb available for you to book all year long. It was modern and offer us the ideal amount of space. Cozy in the Quarry has 2 bedrooms. The main bedroom has a double bed and ensuite washroom with shower. There was lots of storage in the closet and drawers.
My kids has the second bedroom with bunk beds. The bottom bunk was a double and the top a single, with a very cool staircase to the bunk. The stairs doubled as drawers which the kids loved. The girls has their own washroom as well – another perk! I don’t wan tto share a bathroom with two teenagers!
The cottage living spaces were clean and minimal which made for a lovely calmness while we were there. The house came with lots of board games and TVs in almost every space. My kids were in paradise. The kitchen came with those essentials you always forget, like salt and paper and cooking spray. Again, everything was clean and minimal, so even though we cooked all of our meals there, clean up was so quick and easy. Perfect for a vacation.
My favourite part of the cottage, and where I spent the majority of my time when at home, was the backyard. There is a large covered deck with comfortable patio furniture and an outdoor TV. It also had a cozy hanging chair that my girls claimed as their own. Walking down the steps is the outdoor dining area, a BBQ (that comes with propane!) and a campfire pit. We played some cornhole while were barbequed our meals and soaked up some sun on the grass.
I enjoyed this rental so much, I’ll be checking my calendar for 2024!
Beaches and Water Activities
Mother Nature gifted us another beautiful late summer weekend so we took in all of the water fun Sherkston Shores offers. We swam in Lake Erie and laughed non stop as the waves tried to take us out. It was a windy day, so normally it’s not rought. The sand was light and warm and the beach was so clean.
After the lake swimming, we dipped into the waterpark – which was amazing! Multiple pools, water slides, wading pools and a massive splash pad. There is a beach bar, lots of loungers and shuffle board to play between swims.
My one regret is that we didn’t make time to swim in the quarry. The 27-acre spring fed Quarry is a popular spots for swimming, water sports, fishing (catch-and-release), and has sandy beaches for a relaxing warm summer day. The quarry is almost 70ft deep in the deepest part (the middle) and offers great snorkeling I’m told. Scuba Divers can explore the remains of a 100-year-old mining operation on the quarry floor. If you have scuba gear make sure to pack it for your visit to Sherkston Shores.
Sherkston Shores and Cozy in the Quarry were build for families. Everything from the rentals to the grounds to the amenities have family fun as their goal. I mentioned before that I have multiple friends who have been going for years and who have recommended it every summer.
Kids scooter and bike everywhere when they’re not riding shotgun in golf carts driven by their parents. Didn’t I mention the GOLF CART?! Yes, renting with Cozy in the Quarry includes a golf cart for booting from one attraction to another. This was no doubt my husband’s favourite part.
Lots of kids were playing soccer on their fields, zooming around of wheels and having a great time at the multiple playgrounds dotted through the huge resort.
More Fun on Dry Land
When you want to take a break from swimming in the lake and the pools, your fun is only beginning! We played many rounds of mini golf in our short stay. We also spent more than a few quarters in the arcade because who can resist an arcade?! It’s like Las Vegas to us. There are also tennis and pickleball courts, basketball courts and a ball hockey arena, too. Bring your sports equipment and you will never be bored.
For an additional fee you can also jump into some thrilling activities including:
You can make this an official vacation by skipping the kitchen and dining at on-resort restaurants. There are two to choose from, one being a casual family spot and the other is a poolside patio bar that offers small nibbles to enjoy throughout the day.
Seasonal Highlights:
There’s no doubting that you will get the biggest bang for your vacation buck if you visit Sherston Shores during the hot summer months. We stayed in mid September and still enjoyed everything the resort had to offer, so don’t count out the end of summer weeks.
Tips for Staying at Cozy in the Quarry at Sherkston Shores:
Bring all of your own food, but if you forget something, no need to stress because Sherkston has a grocery store in site. They really have thought of everything.
Pack everyone’s favourite pillow and blanket. Linens aren’t included, but you’ll get a packing list when you book.
Bring a friend! Cozy in the Quarry sleeps 7 people, so next time my kids can each bring a friend.
Do everything! We should have brought scooters and more sports equipment because the amount of FREE fun is unmatched.

Meet me at the pier – Pier 4 that is! This waterfront destination in Hamilton is full of reasons to visit from an amazing nautical-themed playground and is just a hop, skip and a jump from the famous Theodore Tugboat Too!
Spring 2024 Update: Pier 4 Park is currently under construction, undergoing updates and renovations to various sections of the playground. (Source)
Fun Is Waiting For You At Pier 4
There is just something extra special about a playground at the waterfront, isn’t there? The air is fresh and misty and it’s a couple of degrees coolers on those hot summer days.
When you arrive and park in the large parking lot (I appreciate good parking) your kids will lock eyes on that tugboat-themed play structure and fall in love. It’s big and full of promise.
The giant boat is perfect for make-believe and even offers some shade on a sunny day. When you climb to the bow you are treated to a bird’s eye view of the playground. The large, elevated climbing structure is accessed by ramps instead of stairs, making it a little more accessible. Run and climb to various heights and speed down the many slides. When you need a rest, there is a set of swings waiting for you.
Stop by in the hot weather and the splash pad at Pier 4 will be on to cool you down. It’s small, but colourful and definitely does the trick.
Around The Park
In addition to the play structure, you will also love the paved paths if you’ve got kids who love their wheels. Bring your scooters, skateboards, rollerblades and wagons and easily mosey around the grounds.
Pack a picnic lunch or a snack and spread out on the lawns to enjoy. There are washrooms available as well. You’ll meet lots of birds and enjoy the gardens as you walk closer to Bayfront Park, which bumps up against Pier 4’s playground area.
Things To See And Do At Bayfront Park
Bayfront is located directly beside Pier 4. The paved pathways connect the two spots so you can easily visit both in one trip. Bayfront Park is a large green space that is alive with visitors no matter the time or weather. It’s a popular meeting place for walkers, runners, cyclists and inline skaters. The landscaping and gardens are a treat for the eyes and the marina offers lots of opportunities for taking in the scenery.
Near the water, you’ll see ducks and swans and Canadian geese. Look for the large Canadian Flag (hint, look down, not up!). We highly recommend picking up some donuts from Grandad’s because you’re so close.
Enjoy Pier 8 In All Seasons
On the other side of Pier 4, a short walk away, you can visit Pier 8, another popular destination. If you’re a fan of cool art pieces, walking near the peaceful waterfront and treating yourself to a scoop of ice cream, this is the place for you!
There is a large flat concrete pad that you can find roller skaters making great use of during the summer months. During the winter, it’s transformed into an outdoor skating rink.
Theodore Tugboat Lives At Pier 8, Too!
This handsome devil takes up a boat slip or two at Pier 8 and is definitely a popular attraction for the entire family. Theodore Too is a Great Lakes Ambassador and does a lot of water travel to raise awareness for waterways and the environment.
