The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada (DSC) is a registered charity located at 6981 Concession 4 in Puslinch, Ontario.
The sanctuary provides lifelong care for donkeys, mules and hinnies that need a safe home. Humane education is also an important part of its mission, helping visitors understand these animals and learn about responsible animal stewardship.
During an Open Day, families can explore the sanctuary at their own pace, walk the grounds and trails, see the resident animals and talk with knowledgeable volunteers.
One thing you should know before visiting: this is not a typical petting zoo. The experience is primarily about observing, learning and respectfully meeting the animals from designated areas. Spring at The Donkey Sanctuary
Spring is when the regular visitor season gets underway. Sunday Open Days begin in May, making the sanctuary a lovely choice for a spring day trip. The countryside is waking up, the weather is usually comfortable for exploring and you can spend time outside visiting the donkeys and walking the grounds.
Spring is also a great time to add the sanctuary to a list of things to do with kids in the spring. Just remember that opening dates vary, so check the current calendar before heading out.
Summer at The Donkey Sanctuary
Summer is the heart of the sanctuary’s regular visitor season. Most Sundays from May through October are Open Days, and in 2026 the public visiting window is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can arrive at any time during that window and stay until 3 p.m.

Fall at The Donkey Sanctuary
Fall might be one of the nicest times to visit. The sanctuary’s rural setting becomes especially pretty as the leaves begin to change, and the cooler temperatures make walking around the property comfortable. Open Days continue into October, with the final regular Sunday Open Day of 2026 scheduled for October 25.

Winter at The Donkey Sanctuary
The regular Sunday Open Day season ends in October, but the sanctuary doesn’t completely disappear for the winter. The DSC holds special Holiday Open Days in December. For 2026, Holiday Open Days are scheduled for November 29, December 6 and December 13.
A winter visit offers a completely different experience. You may see the donkeys in their longer winter coats, enjoy the snowy countryside and visit the Long Ears Boutique for unique gifts. The sanctuary notes that the property is a working farm, so winter visitors should be prepared for potentially snowy or icy conditions on the laneway.
2026 Admission to The Donkey Sanctuary
Advance tickets are recommended, particularly because Open Days can sell out. For regular 2026 Sunday Open Days, admission is:

What to Know Before You Go
A little planning will make your family visit much easier.
Wear appropriate footwear. You’re visiting a working farm, so comfortable, closed-toe shoes are a good idea.
Dress for the weather. You’ll be spending much of your visit outdoors.
Don’t expect a petting zoo. The focus is on respectful observation and education rather than hands-on animal interaction.
Book ahead. Advance tickets are recommended and help the sanctuary plan for the number of visitors expected.
Give yourself time. This isn’t necessarily an attraction you rush through in 45 minutes. Plan to stroll, explore, talk to volunteers and spend some time watching the animals.
