Before there was Schitt’s Creek’s Moira Rose, there was Beetlejuice’s Delia Deetz. In her first collaboration with director Tim Burton, Catherine O’Hara steals every scene she’s in as Winona Ryder’s monied, art-snob stepmom, who ruthlessly sets out to remodel the family’s newly acquired country house as a showcase for her delightfully demented sculptures. The house in question was formerly the dream home of the Maitlands (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis), a young couple who were killed in a car accident and now remain trapped in their former abode as phantoms. Affronted by Delia’s hideous home makeover, the Maitlands hire “bio-exorcist” Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to dispose of the fleshly nuisances – but as the lascivious ghoul sets his sights on Lydia (Ryder), the sullen teenage daughter who has befriended them, the Maitlands have to decide whether to ally themselves with life or death. Giving Burton’s carnivalesque sensibility free rein, Beetlejuice is a wild parade of fantastic inventions, from a hilariously bureaucratized underworld to a supernatural Harry Belafonte karaoke session led by a gyrating O’Hara.
