Great news for fans of African Lion Safari – they open Saturday, May 4th for the 2024 season and have lots of WILD fun in store for you and your family! We have the inside scoop on what you can expect when you visit this summer, updates on the new African Lion Safari ticket prices plus some tips and important info for visitors.

2024 Season highlights

African Lion Safari is Canada’s Original Safari Adventure. They maintain a collection of over 1,000 exotic birds and animals comprised of over 100 different species. What animal is your favourite? Will you giggle at the silly monkeys and lemurs or be entranced watching the long-legged giraffes stroll their habitat?

Drive Through Game Reserve – One of my earliest memories of African Lion Safari was when we saw cars driving through the game reserves getting oh-so-close to the animals roaming around. It was like nothing I had ever seen before! The drive-through is 9 km long and it takes you up close through 7 large Game Reserves featuring Nairobi Sanctuary, Simba Lion Country, Timbavati Lion Country, Wankie Bushland Trail, Rocky Ridge Veldt, Australasia and The Americas. You stay in your vehicle, driving at a very slow pace, and you get to witness animals roam their territory.

Take The “Nature Boy “Train – Hop on the train for a 15-minute ride through 16 hectares of animals and birds. A trip is included in your admission.

Climb Aboard The “African Queen” – Take a boat ride to enjoy a pleasant tour around Water Safari Lake. The informative captain will take you on a cruise around the islands and point out exotic primates including the White-handed gibbon, Ring-tailed lemur, Black-handed Spider monkeys and Robust Black Spider monkeys. Bird dwellers include the Marabou stork and the Pink-backed pelican. The tour is about 15 minutes and is included in your admission.

African Lion Safari’s Waterpark Splash Pad

The splash pad, Misumu Bay Wetplay, is more than just a splash pad at African Lion Safari! As a matter of fact, this may be the highlight of your visit! I have multiple friends who buy season passes strictly for this amazing waterpark. The waterpark is included in your admission and while you’re there cool down under the dumping bucket or slip down the water slides. Enjoy sprinklers and water shooters and fountains, too!

Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm – How It Came To Be

Just a short history of this sweet farm… Happy Rolph’s Animal Farm was created by Harry “Happy” Rolph when he build a bird sanctuary on his property. Happy, along with his wife Jen, built several ponds on the property to help attract more birds, and eventually grew to attract thousands of birds annually to the property. When the couple decided to retire in the 70s, the sanctuary was purchased by the Province, City and Niagara Conservation Authority, and eventually was bought by the City of St. Catharines. To honour his work, the location was renamed Happy Rolph Bird Sanctuary in 1974.

What Animals Are At Happy Rolph’s?

Spend a few hours getting up close with animals. Rolph’s has everything including alpacas, horses, chickens, turkeys, llamas and a big hog. The grounds are well-kept and wheel-friendly. In staying with its bird sanctuary roots, you can visit the large pond that is home to swans, mallards, ducks and geese. You can buy some feed for them at the farm as well.

Twin Valley Nature Park – formerly called Brantford Twin Valley Zoo – ranks high on the list of must-visit destinations for so many reasons. Read on for those reasons, plus some helpful hints for your day with the animals.

Welcome To Twin Valley Zoo

Brantford Twin Valley Zoo opened its doors in 1991 and offers 25 acres of native and exotic animals from April through October. Twin Valley Zoo is perfectly sized for families because it offers the ability to see the entire park in one visit.

Some of our photos are from our visit in 2019 where we got a behind-the-scenes tour.

When you arrive, the zoo greeters are some of the cutest and most cuddly little goats I’ve ever seen. If you watched my Instastories, you’ll see how quickly Cotton and I fell in love.

tips for Feeding the goats (From An Almost Expert)

  • Get your pellets from the machine, then MOVE AWAY. It’s like a dinner bell for them, so back away once you’ve got your handful.
  • Spread out, there’s lots of space, and your feeding experience will be a better one if you have your own space
  • Feed them low, and they won’t jump. It took me a few minutes to realize this, but it’s true.
  • Take pictures, because the cuteness is too much!

Explore The Zoo

Once you’ve had your goat fix, you’re ready to wander the zoo and see all of the local and exotic animals that call Brantford Twin Valley Zoo home. Here’s one tip I cannot stress enough – ask all the questions! Your kids will have questions and so will you, so make sure you ask the staff. They’re all around the park, and so friendly and helpful. They’re truly passionate about the animals and always took the time to answer our queries.

My kids wanted to know what the animals did in the winter months, why certain animals could live with others (like tortoises) and why others couldn’t, and how the animals came to live at the Zoo.

Getting up close with the wildlife at Brantford Twin Valley Zoo

The Perfect Variety of Wildlife

My girls love the ring-tailed lemurs and the rough lemurs. Watching them swing and jump and put on a show for the crowds is fantastic. Plus, their cuteness is off the charts.

You absolutely MUST ask Jennifer to teach you about the wolf pack. Her wolf howl is out of the world, and the way Storm, Mogli and Maverick respond will blow you away. Learning so much about such a secretive species was a highlight for me.

Feeding the lemurs during our special tour

Listen For “The Big Cats”

The big cats always get so much of my attention. I truly appreciate how lucky we are to be able to see them up close and learn about their life in the wild and what brought them into captivity. Their personalities are all different and watching them interact with each other and the staff is great.

Make sure to listen for the lion’s roaring and tiger’s “chuffing”. Their communication skills are wild!

Did You Know?

If you need a shady break, why not play at the free playground? A great spot to rest, eat and regroup.

BYO food, too! Small treats and snacks are available onsite, but you’re encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and eat at one of the many picnic tables throughout the Zoo.

Be sure to make time for the Animal Shows that happen every 2 hours. They’re a great way for kids to ask questions and see smaller animals up close and personal.

It’s great for grandparents. We saw tons of inter-generational families, so invite them to join you! There’s plenty of seating all throughout the park, and shady spots, which means it’s perfect for me too 🙂

Tips for Your Visit to Twin Valley Nature Park

Bring your strollers and wagons, the grounds are very wheel friendly.

Pack some bug deterrent if you’re going to take the Nature trail, on humid days the mosquitos are hungry.

The animal food vending machines take quarters, so I’d plan for at least one dollar’s worth per kiddo (goats and deer can be fed)

Take our word for it, Brantford’s Twin Valley Zoo is one attraction you have to visit. And when you go, share your favourite part of your day with us!

Admission, Hours and More

  • Children 2-14 years old = $11.50 (kids under 2 are free with a paying adult)
  • Adults 15-65 years old = $22.00
  • Seniors 65+ years old = 18.00

Things To Do On Mother’s Day

Indoor Places To Take Mom for Mother’s Day

May weather can be unpredictable so play it safe and plan an indoor activity with Mom. Here are some suggestions from the moms in our community.

Visit Gage Park Greenhouse – The tropical greenhouse in Gage Park is like a mini-vacation and, therefore it must be an ideal destination for moms who love gardening, plants and flowers. In addition to the hundreds of plants and flowers, look for the koi fish and turtles swimming about. Entry is free, and donations are appreciated. A top-rated spot to visit on Mother’s Day in Hamilton. Read about our visit to the greenhouse.

The Art Gallery of Hamilton is one of our fave spots to visit with all 3 generations of our family. School-age kids will love the exhibits on the 2nd floor and there will be lots of discussion about that cool VW Bus! As a result, the multiple floors of art and installations will keep your eyes entertained all Mother’s Day in Hamilton! Read about our latest visit to the AGH.

Royal Botanical Gardens – RBG is home to beautiful indoor gardens that will convince you you’re on vacation. You can visit the Rock Garden or their other beautifully maintained grounds. RBG is a long-time favourite of our “Gramma” and I think yours will love visiting on Mother’s Day. Read about our latest visit to the RBG.

The Art Gallery of Burlington is home to various exhibits in an assortment of mediums, however, it’s very family-friendly, too. Make sure to see the space dedicated to impromptu creativity, complete with book nooks for reading. The gallery is wheel-friendly and spacious. There is a small greenhouse with a relaxing water feature. Large windows make the gallery bright and airy. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated. ABG website.

More Indoor Things To Do on Mother’s Day

Take Mom To The Movies at a local, indie movie theatre like The Westdale in Hamilton, Film.ca in Oakville, Landmark Cinema in Jacksons Square, the 100-year-old Playhouse Cinema, or at CineStarz in Downtown Burlington. Many have special screenings as part of their Mother’s Day events. In addition to a smaller, more intimate theatre size, you also enjoy lower ticket prices, but the concessions and quaintness are big big big!

Get Creative – Got an artsy mama? Take them to paint some pottery at a local paint-your-own-pottery studio. It’s a great activity for families, and she’ll get a mini-masterpiece to remember the special day by. Find a local PYOP studio here.

Outdoor Places Moms Love Visiting

Royal Botanical Gardens is home to some of the most stunning gardens and green spaces in southern Ontario and how lucky are we to live nearby! If the weather plays in your favour, take Mom and the whole family to walk through the grounds and see the magnolia trees in bloom and the beginnings of the cherry blossoms! Bring your camera and pre-book your parking because this destination is popular.

Spencer Smith Park is a popular destination in Burlington. Stroll the paved, wheel-friendly waterfront trail all the way to the lift bridge, check out the cherry blossom trail and enjoy the playground if you’ve got little kids with you. You’ll find great lunch and dinner options, for instance, Mother’s Day brunch at Spencer’s at the Waterfront, and lots of coffee and dessert shops, too! Parking is free on weekends and there’s lots of it in the parking complex at Lakeshore and Locust Street. Find shops and restaurant details here.

Play Some Mini Golf – Mini Putt is a perfect sport because it requires very little talent and causes lots of laughs! Some of the best local courses are open for the season, find them here.

Nature Walk and Talk – Take your favourite mom on a walk, stroll or hike in Hamilton or Burlington. We have a list of family-friendly spots to walk to help you choose the trail that suits your group the best. Click here and grab your shoes!

The University of Guelph Arbouretum makes for a lovely stroll and a peaceful way to spend time outdoors. Kids will love the natural playground, and gravel paths make it easy for walking. Above all, be sure to enjoy the Japanese Garden and the native trees.

Visit A Local Garden Centre

Mom will love anything you give her, but why not take her to the garden centre and enjoy a few hours in a plant lover’s paradise? I had no idea this was one of the most popular Mother’s Day events and outings! We asked our friends with green thumbs which garden centres are worth a visit, and here’s what they recommended:

  • Burlington’s Centro Market is home to a garden centre and farmers market, and the market opens for the season on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2024.
  • Holland Park in Dundas is a popular spot to find plants, flowers, and fresh-made arrangements.
  • Visit Harper’s Garden Centre in Ancaster. Their website boasts 15,000 unique items to choose from!
  • Winona Gardens is a local favourite and a 3rd generation family-owned garden centre.
  • Terra has greenhouses in Milton, Burlington, Hamilton and Waterdown and is a trusted garden centre for many.

These Top-Rated Restaurants Are Perfect For A Mother’s Day Brunch

We check with local foodies, tourism and of course, Moms, to find their favourite brunch spots for Mother’s Day and any day worth celebrating. These delightful spots will surely book up quickly for Mother’s Day, so as soon as you find one you like, call and make a reso. Above all, enjoy yourselves.

Best Brunch In Oakville:

  • The Crepe Kitchen offers you over 40 types of savoury and sweet crepes served all day long.
  • Community Resto is a vegan staple in Oakville, but even for meat eaters like me, it was a delicious treat for the tastebuds. Waffles, pancakes, breakfast burritos and more.
  • Harpers Landing has never disappointed me! Their brunch menu boasts every delicacy you can imagine from eggs benny to huevos rancheros and cheesecake stuffed french toast (heaven!)

Burlington’s Best Brunches

  • Pur & Simple is a frequent stop for my “ladies who brunch” group because we’ve never had a bad brunch here. There is something for every dietary need and their food is made fresh and served hot. I recommend their artisan French toast and their skillet breakfasts. And of course, a mimosa to celebrate!
  • Spencer’s at the Waterfront is famous for their weekend brunch and it’s plain to see why. Between their beautiful decor, the stunning lake views and their menu offering multiple types of eggs Benedict, the timeless steak and eggs and even a chocolate cake waffle!
  • Russell Williams speaks my breakfast language! One of the longest-operating restaurants in Burlington offers large portions of homestyle cooking to write home about!

Best Brunch In Hamilton:

  • Ancaster Mill serves a 5-star brunch every weekend. Treat yourself (and mom) to this fine-dining destination, housed in an old stone flour mill overlooking a waterfall.
  • Shy’s Place was mentioned numerous times to us by our community. Shy’s Place is located in a historic Dundas home-turned-restaurant. They also have an outdoor, year-round patio.
  • Motel Restaurant is your choice if you love an Insta-worthy restaurant with food to match the beauty of the decor. Decadent breakfast items are taken to the next level plus some naughty name cocktails to sip.
  • Electric Diner is definitely a place after my own heart with its eclectic 80’s decor and home cooking-style menu of classics, with a kick.
Enjoy a hot, homestyle breakfast skillet at Pur & Simple

Taking the kids to a drive-in movie is a classic memory maker. This list curates your options for drive-in movie theatres in Hamilton, Oakville, Niagara and more. You have a variety of options to choose from.

An evening at the drive-in is an evening everyone can enjoy. It’s a long-time favourite date night idea no matter your age. Watch a double feature (and occasionally a triple feature) of your favourite classic movies or a hot new release. I love that it’s cozier than a typical theatre and a little more private.

Kids love the drive-in theatre experience because it’s exciting and out of the box. There’s nothing better than watching a movie in your jammies while eating popcorn in the comfort of your vehicle.

Oakville Summer Camps With Single Day Booking https://activeparents.ca/oakville-summer-camps-with-single-day-booking/ Thu, 18 Apr 2024 13:41:25 +0000 https://activeparents.ca/?p=68933 Summer camps are a great way for kids to stay active, learn new skills, and have fun during the summer months. If you're located in Burlington and are looking for summer camp options for your children, you're in luck!

The post Oakville Summer Camps With Single Day Booking appeared first on Active Parents.

Opting to book individual days for your kids at camp rather than committing to a full week provides flexibility and liberty. This method empowers you to customize activities according to your child’s passions and energy levels daily. It opens doors to spontaneity, letting you seize unforeseen chances or events.

Moreover, booking day by day prevents wasted days when your child might not be up for participating or when other responsibilities crop up. This approach nurtures independence in children as they grasp planning and managing their time. Ultimately, it guarantees a more pleasurable and tailored summer break for both parents and children.

There are many reasons why parents (and kids) may prefer booking single days of summer camp. Here are a few of the most common ones:

  • Flexibility: Parents appreciate the ability to choose specific days for their child to attend summer camp, accommodating their family’s schedule without committing to a full week.
  • Personalization: Booking single days allows parents to tailor their child’s camp experience to their interests, ensuring they participate in activities they enjoy.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Opting for individual days can be more economical for families, as they only pay for the days their child attends rather than a full week.
  • Reduced Commitment: Some parents prefer the flexibility of booking single days as it minimizes their commitment, allowing them to test the camp environment or accommodate varying summer plans.
  • Convenience: Booking individual days makes it easier to manage conflicting appointments or events, ensuring their child can still participate in summer camp while accommodating other activities.
