Have you been to Shell Park in Oakville? This park space truly has something for everyone, no matter their age! Your family – from babies to retirees – will find something that keeps them coming back time and again.

where is shell park?

Shell Park is a large park, playground and garden pace in Oakville. It’s located on Lakeshore Ave., just east of Great Lakes Drive. With ample free parking, at various lots throughout the park, you’ll find a spot easily if you drive over.

Shell Park Playground Oakville

The Playground

We’ve always loved this playground because of the rubberized play surface and the mature trees that provide lots of shade – essential for us redheads who burn easily. The playground has lots of ways to climb, balance and swing, and I know your kids will have fun here.

My 10-year old claims Shell Skatepark are one of her favourite skateparks. The immense size and impressive graffiti make it a top-rated cool kids hangout. If you’ve got younger kiddos or skaters with less experience, definitely aim for a morning visit. It can get busy once the teenagers arrive. We’ve never had an issue, though. In fact, we’ve had great experiences with the “big kids” at Shell Skate Park. There are a few parent benches around the skate park, and lots of parking.

The beautiful Gardens

I’m an amateur gardener and all-around nature lover, so the beautiful gardens at Shell Park are always a favourite stop for me. The gardens are paved with stepping stones and because they are lovingly maintained by dedicated folks, they are in bloom all spring, summer and fall in some fashion. Bring your camera and snap some inspiration for your own garden, or some photos of your adorable kids in a gorgeous setting.

it has a dog park, too!

I wasn’t fibbing when I said that Shell Park has something for everyone – even pooches! This dog park has high ratings from canine owners. The dog park has 2 pens, one for bigger dogs and one for little guys, and in warmer months, there is water on-site to keep them hydrated. If you need shade or shelter from the rain, there is a little hut as well.

shell park amenities

  • Shaded playground with swings, slides, lots of climbing and balancing apparatuses
  • Skate Park for skateboards, bikers, rollerblades and scooters.
  • Ample Parking
  • Massive, high-rated dog park
  • Gardens and green spaces

7 Drivers Ed Providers to Get Your Teenager Driving

If you have a 16 year old in your home they may be itching to get behind the wheel and driving the family vehicle.  Ontario has a 2-step process.  After completing the written test, many families turn to approved driving instructors for in class and in car driving lessons, but where to turn?

This is just a short list of program providers, so if you’re looking for even more options, click here for Government of Ontario approved driving schools.

Tips From A Parent When Picking A Driving School

My oldest can now drive, and it’s the best. But it was a bumpy road to get here. Driving school is expensive and time consuming, especially for teens eager to get out on the road.

My first tip is to DO YOUR RESEARCH when it comes to choosing a driving program. Talk to people who have used the service and ask if they remember their instructor’s name. Instructors make all the difference, and a bad one can ruin your time in the car. Yes, they should all be teaching the same skills, but they’re not unfortunately. We had to navigate some murky waters and I had to speak up more than once when we were disappointed in the service we were getting.

Secondly, speak up when something is off. Many centre owners don’t know what happens in class or in the car, and they would (probably) appreciate knowing if an employee is harming their reputation with poor service. Communicate with your kids regarding what to expect from their lessons and what to question. This is a big responsibility!

Hamilton is home to plenty of great things to do with kids.

Welcome To The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

The museum was founded in 1972 by a group of aviation enthusiasts who wanted to preserve Canada’s aviation heritage. Today, it is one of the largest and most comprehensive aviation museums in Canada. This Hamilton museum’s collection includes over 40 aircraft, ranging from vintage biplanes to modern jet fighters.

I learned so much about these guys all thanks to my amazing tour guide!

What Kind Of Planes Are At The Warplane Heritage Museum?

One of the highlights of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s collection is the Avro Lancaster, a World War II-era heavy bomber that played a crucial role in the war effort. The museum’s Lancaster, known as the “Mynarski Memorial Lancaster” in honour of a Canadian airman who received the Victoria Cross for his actions aboard a Lancaster, is one of only two airworthy Lancasters in the world.

Other notable aircraft in the museum’s collection include the CF-100 Canuck, Canada’s first jet fighter, and the first fighter aircraft to be designed and built in large quantities in Canada. This plane can fly as fast as 550 miles per hour!

Also check out the CF-104 Starfighter, a supersonic jet fighter used by the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Cold War, and the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver, a versatile bush plane that played a key role in Canada’s remote northern regions.

My favourite planes are the Consolidated PBY-5A Canso because of its harrowing story and sentimental touch, and the Avro Lancaster which you’ve possibly seen flying around the skies on occasion. I love the heroic history of the Lancaster. In total 7,377 Lancasters rolled off the production lines in Britain and Canada, during WW II. Today, 17 Lancasters survive around the world, but only two are in flying condition. Aren’t we lucky to have one so close by?

More Things To Check Out at The Warplane Museum in Hamilton

In addition to its impressive collection of aircraft, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum also houses a variety of exhibits and displays that provide insight into Canada’s aviation history. The museum’s displays cover a wide range of topics, from the early days of flight in Canada to the role Canadian aircraft played in the war and modern history.

One of the most popular exhibits at the museum is the “RCAF Women’s Division”. This exhibit tells the story of the women who served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. The exhibit features uniforms, equipment, and personal stories of the women who served in a variety of roles, including as pilots, navigators, and radio operators.

I spent a long time checking out the Art For Victory exhibit. It highlights the various ways propaganda posters were used to boost recruitment and keep spirits up during the war. I bet you didn’t know that graphic designers and printing companies served such a big role in the war effort.

Visitors to the museum can also take part in a variety of hands-on experiences, such as sitting in the cockpit of a fighter jet or trying their hand at flying a simulator.

Overall, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is an excellent destination for anyone interested in aviation or Canadian history. The museum’s impressive collection of aircraft and exhibits, combined with its interactive experiences, make it a must-visit for anyone near the Hamilton area.

5 Must-Dos When You Visit

1. Accept a Tour Guide – Normally I like to do my own thing, but the amount of experience and knowledge Phillip – my tour guide – shared with me was beyond anything I could have imagined. Guides are very willing to tell you all they know and answer your questions. I wandered around with Phillip for 2.5 hours and loved every minute.

2. Look and Listen – Watch the videos and listen to the recordings. You’ll be transported back in time and feel emersed in your experience.

3. Priase The Women of Aviation! Ladies, we did a LOT more than we know, and a lot more than we get credit for. Female pilots flew all over the world and piloted so many massive aircraft. We generally had a smaller frame, which is perfect for piloting those early planes. Thanks, Phillip for letting me know all about women’s role in the war and aviation.

4. Climb Aboard – Many of the aircraft at the Canadian Warplane Museum have open cockpits and visitors are allowed (and encouraged) to sit in them. Make sure you have a staff member with you and listen to a guide as they tell you all about the buttons and dials. Can you tell how much I loved my guided tour?!

5. Visit The Gift Shop – I know that sounds like a commercial, but they have the coolest t-shirts, mugs and posters for aviation fans. Looking for models? Books? Puzzles? You will find some very unique gift items here.

I have over 100 photos from my visit to the Warplane Museum.

One More Tip…

And last but not least, go slow as you tour through the Hamilton Warplane Museum. There is so much to see and learn, don’t rush your way through. And come back often! Especially in spring and summer when you can see the planes take off and land.

Burlington has a very cool entertainment facility called Activate and we are so excited to tell you about it! It’s a favourite for families who love excitement and high energy fun.

From their website:
“Activate is the world’s first active gaming facility, where you’ll play arcade-style games by actually jumping, climbing, and dodging. You and your group of 3-5 will move freely between eleven interactive rooms, choosing games that challenge your agility, problem-solving, and speed. Dive through lasers. Climb glowing walls. Only the best can conquer them all. Think you have what it takes?”

Visiting Activate in Burlington

Activate Burlington is a large, indoor entertainment facility for players ages 10 and older. The games are challenging and built with adults in mind. We had 2 adults and 2 kids, ages 10 and 12 with us and they tackled the games with gusto. We had a group of four, and Activate recommends 3-5 people per game. 2 can play, but it will be more challenging. Your visit is 75 minutes and you can choose your timeslot through their online booking system. You can have up to 10 in your booking time, but you’ll be split into groups of up to 5 to provide the best playing experience.

The Game Rooms

At Activate, you get access to all 9 rooms of gameplay, and you can play them more than once as long as time permits. I loved that the game rooms included both cooperative and competitive challenges because sometimes it’s fun to kick some butt! The rooms we each very different ad put our skills to the test. My kids loved the “Climb”, the room of light-up rock-climbing grips that change colour from green to red as you scale your way around the room. Stay off the red ones! There is also another level where the grips light up and you need to grab them whack-a-mole style!

“Grid” was a full energy mission to get from side to side without touching the lit tiles on the floor. Needless to say, I was the worst player on our team here, haha! But we laughed so much that I didn’t mind. This room has 3 variations of gameplay you can try. We had so much fun in all of the rooms, but my kids liked “Hoops” – a basketball shooting mission, and “Laser” the most.

“Laser” made you feel like you were creeping through a top-secret vault protected by motion-activated laser beams. It was another laugh-fest that made us sweaty and wide-eyed. This one was hard but so exciting. You can see all of the rooms at Active Burlington here.

Tips For Your Visit to Activate Burlington

Book your visit online before to make sure you get a spot. Walk-ins are permitted, but you may not get your preferred time. Bring a small group with you, and don’t worry about talent or skill because everyone will have a great time. This was an excellent outing for my tween and teen, and my husband (who likes being home) loved it too.

There are lockers to hold your coats/bags, etc. because you definitely want your hands free and to make movement easy. Short sleeves were good because you want easy access to your Activate wristband because that is what grants you access to the rooms, and tracks your scores. Think of it as a gym class: rubber-soled shoes, long hair tied back.

Outside of each room, and throughout the facility there was hand sanitizer, and we found it to be very clean.

Price: $28 per person, plus taxes. Click here to book online.

The Art Gallery of Hamilton – or AGH for short – is one of the city’s best places to visit for families. Yes, kids will enjoy the art gallery, you have my word on it! Plus, we have the scoop on how you can enjoy free admission! Read on to find out.

The Art Gallery of Hamilton – Fun For Kids

The Art Gallery of Hamilton is 75,000 square feet and home to over 10,000 pieces in its collection. It’s way bigger than I imagined. Some pieces come and stay for a short period. These are called exhibitions. But many of the works call the art gallery home permanently and are referred to as collections. The second floor is home to a mixture of exhibitions and collections.

On our most recent visit, at the end of September, we spent the afternoon wandering the outdoor gallery grounds and checking out all of the works in the garden. Then we made our way inside to see our favourite gallery, Level 2. Here’s a scoop on what we saw.

Read More: Find more things to do in Hamilton right here.

Addison loved every single exhibit on Level 2!

The first collection we saw when we got off the elevator was titled Tom Thompson: The Art of Authentication. After checking out those works, we walked into the Level 2 Gallery and saw the temporary residency installation from Sylvia Nickerson. My layman’s description is “posed human figures made out of shredded, colourful paper”. It was so eye-catching and great to be able to look at it up close. There were large pieces right on the open floor that you could walk around and really observe. I just wanted to reach out and touch them (but don’t do that!).

My 11-year-old really liked the comic book-esque works and spent a lot of time checking them out in detail. Kids notice such unusual things! Some pieces included packing bits, tin foil, plastic and other repurposed items. They were busy and eye-catching and gave us so many things to point out. If I had a nickel for every time I said “Look at that!” I’d be rich.

We Came To See The Bus

Our main reason for visiting was to see something I’ve wanted to see for so long. The Bruegel-Bosch Bus by Kim Adams. It definitely didn’t disappoint! In fact, I’ve got plans to take the rest of the family back to check it out. The bus is a permanent installation at the AGH, so don’t worry that you might miss it. It’s a wild creation that connects an awesome Volks Wagon Bus and thousands of toys and action figures. It’s truly like nothing you’ve ever seen before. I cannot recommend a visit to see it enough.

When we visited, the roof had a small leak that was being repaired, so we couldn’t walk all around the Bus but normally you can see it from every angle. We recommend spending lots of time looking at every nook and cranny.

Can you see the skeletons, Austin powers figurines, train tracks, hockey players…and more?!

After we spent so long in that section, we wandered the rest of the second floor. They had a section filled with massive works by Indigenous artists and (again) we fell in love. Make sure to check it out when you visit the AGH. The colours are stunning.

My little masterpiece and her favourite work of art

Walk a little more and you’ll find more rooms with even more cool things to see. This miniature city scene had the tiniest details and was another of my daughter’s favourites. This room was filled with contemporary art, which was an excellent and engaging introduction for my 11-year-old. There were great discussions about the art itself, how it was made and why the artist and the design (why that colour? texture?)

The Art Gallery of Hamilton shares these tips for families when they visit:

  • The AGH is baby-friendly. Bring your stroller or front baby carrier. They have elevators.
  • Breastfeed in their many seating areas, or for more privacy try their Playroom space
  • Washrooms have change tables
  • Keep your visit short if you need to, match your child’s pace and come back multiple times
  • Ask kids lots of questions to focus their investigation, and encourage them to share their ideas. Let your child lead to ensure you see things that interest and engage them. Play games like “I Spy” or “Tell Me What Happens Next.”

Visiting the AGH – For Free!

The very best part of our visit to Gallery Level 2 and the Jean and Ross Fischer Gallery is that they are always FREE ADMISSION courtesy of RBC Incite Foundation for the Arts and Orlick Industries. And admission to the AGH in its entirety is free on Thursdays right now.

Address: Art Gallery of Hamilton – 123 King Street West in Hamilton. You can visit the AGH website here.

Free Fishing Weekends 2025 – Free Fishing in Ontario

Normally, in Ontario, you need to possess a fishing licence to fish recreationally. However, four times a year the government allows for licence-free fishing, and these weekends make the ideal time to get out in nature and enjoy a day lakeside.

Free Fishing Weekend in Ontario will allow for licence-free fishing for Canadian residents on the following days:

  • Family Fishing Weekend in February (February 15-17, 2025)
  • Mother’s Day Weekend in May (May 10-11, 2025)
  • Father’s Day Weekend in June (June 14-15, 2025)
  • Family Fishing Week in July (June 28–July 6, 2025)

If you’re not a regular fisher or a fishing licence holder, make sure you take advantage of these weekends. They are a great and fun way to spend time with family and friends while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors!

How To Borrow Fishing Equipment

Since 1998, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has sponsored a program called TackleShare to loan our fishing equipment for free. This program removes the financial barrier that would keep families from enjoying this relaxing sport.

Borrow rods, reels and even tackle is as simple as checking out a book from the library. TackleShare has hundreds of loaner sites in Ontario. They also partner with Ontario Parks to help bring fishing to more families. Just one more way to enjoy a free fishing weekend in Ontario! You can find a list of the loaner sites here.

Let’s banish those winter blues! Here are more than 50 things to do in winter in Hamilton and Halton area, including Milton, Oakville, Burlington, Waterdown, Hamilton, Stoney Creek and beyond. We love keeping this list on hand for those days when you need a little extra motivation to head out into the coldworld. This list of winter thing to do should inspire you to revisit a family favourite winter adventure, try something new and have fun!

Explore Nature

  • Hike at one of our favourite kid-approved hiking spots. We’ve got stroller-friendly hikes here, so bring the littlest explorers with you.
  • Wander near the water. Lake Ontario’s waterfront is easily accessible, smooth-paved in most areas, and always free to explore.
  • Keep an eye on the wildlife all winter in Burlington’s Cherry Hill Gate. Bring your binoculars and observe the birds, squirrels and other animals in the waterways. They’re active no matter the time of year!
  • Visit Bronte Creek Provincial park and explore the working Victorian-era farmhouse and see some of their farm animals. If the temperatures are mild, they may be out in their pens! (spring and summer)
  • Take a trip to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory. It’s a tropical oasis that kids will love.
  • Triple C Farm is one of our favourite places to visit – even in the winter! Their farm takes in animals in need and is home to goats, sheep, horses, donkeys, alpacas, llamas, pigs and more!
  • It’s always a warm, spring day at the Gage Park Greenhouse. Bonus – it’s free to visit all year long!

Soak Up The Christmas Spirit

Add a Memorable Family Experience To Your Calendar

  • Hop aboard one of these epic train rides and enjoy the ride, the sights and the experience.
  • Save your pennies and skip the major leagues! We absolutely love OHL hockey games. They’re family-friendly and full of action for a fraction of the price of a Leafs game. Check out the home games for the Brantford Bull Dogs (who have moved from Hamilton to this arena in Brantford) and the Niagara Ice Dogs here.
  • TreeTop Trekking in Hamilton has their Tree Walk Village open over the winter break.
  • Families who love a challenge will love the skills needed to beat an Escape Room. We have a ton of them to choose from, and each location has different themes, rooms and skill levels required.
  • When was the last time you beat your kids at bowling? Sounds like they could use a rematch and we know the coolest lanes to visit.

winter christmas lights train ride
All aboard for a seasonal train ride.

Run, Jump, Climb and Play!

  • Play Indoors no matter the weather. Here’s our massive list of indoor things to do nearby.
  • You can read our coverage of local play centres here and see which ones are going to be added to your “must-visit list”.
  • Tweens and Teens will love climbing at The Hub Climbing in Mississauga.
  • Indoor play centres are always an option to escape the winter temperatures while also keeping the kids active and moving. Here are the lists of indoor play centres in Halton and this list is for Hamilton and Niagara.
  • My teens love an afternoon at the arcade. And I love when I can beat them at retro video games and air hockey!
  • Bowling is one of our favourite things to do with the kids because we never know who will score the lowest haha! But the best part is that you don’t need to win to have a great time.

Easy Outdoor Activities For Winter Fun

Take a Road Trip or a Day Trip

  • Stratford, Ontario looks like a Hallmark movie set in the winter, and their downtown shopping is quaint. Don’t miss out on their widely-known chocolate shops while you’re there.
  • Spend the day or weekend in Guelph because there is so much to do! Here are 10+ things to do in Guelph to get you started.
  • Have you read our recap of our trip to London, Ontario? You need to add a visit to your winter season itinerary!
  • Staycation-ing is my jam, and we loved our local stay trip in Burlington.
  • Have you heard of Leamington? It’s a cute little town that is home to an excellent hotel that is so much fun you won’t need to leave it!

Best Western Leamington is so fun you won’t want to leave the hotel!

Eat Great Food

Free and Cheap Ideas

  • Look into Postcrossing. We’ve been talking about it non-stop since we discovered it. You get an address for someone who would love to receive a postcard and send them one. You, in turn, get one sent to you. We’ve sent and received cards from Japan, England, Lithuania and Africa!
  • The same goes with Letters From Afar. Kids will love following Isabelle on her world adventures through beautiful letters, maps and stamps. We’ve been subscribers for years and these letters are truly something you can save and read with your grandkids!
  • Get science-y with these easy and quick at-home experiments you can do with simple items from your cupboards. Kids will love it and they’ll leave a little something, too!
  • Check out the Library. They’ve got books, movies, games, learning kits, audiobooks and even family passes to art galleries, conservation areas and museums!
  • Play at the Tansley Woods Community Centre play structure. It’s free!

It’s not Fall without a visit to Hanes Corn Maze. Never been? Here’s the scoop on what makes it an ideal destination for a day out with the family.

Looking For Winter Fun? We Got You!

Visit Canada’s Largest Corn Maze!

Hanes Corn Maze is the largest corn maze in Canada with over 20 acres of cornfields shaped yearly into a new, challenging maze. Make your way through the maze and collect clues at various checkpoints to solve the puzzle. Your kids will love following the map and decoding the clues at the end to win a prize. The corn maze takes 1-2 hours to complete, and it’s great fun for everyone. We had a kiddo with extra energy, and she loved running through the maze and down all of the dead ends for us. I also brought my puzzle-genius husband so we did the maze in just over an hour. And we are going to go back again!

Hanes Corn Maze

Farmland and Mini Corn Maze

You can spend a full day at the farm with the kids when you visit Hanes Corn Maze in Hamilton. Little ones will love the “farmland” play area. Enormous tractor tires to climb on, swings and slides, and a sandbox full of tractors and diggers were the big draws for my kids. Don’t miss shooting free throws at the back of the hay trailer – lots of fun! The farmland play area is large and spaced safely, so kids can do lots without worry. Bring your lunches and snacks and sit at one of the many picnic tables chatting while the kids conquer the mini corn maze. It’s a one-way bendy loop through 10-foot-tall cornstalks. Keep your eyes peeled for the gigantic sunflowers – they’re gorgeous.

Visit the Farm Animals

My girls and I are suckers for any animal, so we spent a lot of time googling the goofy goats, the brand new chicks, ducklings, piglets, and of course the furry cows (not their technical name). You can purchase feed from the dispenser, and you can use the little soup ladle to feed the goats if little fingers get nervous. Farmer Seamus told us it was a great summer for new babies at Hanes Corn Maze, and we couldn’t agree more! Watch for the sweetest little grey kitten you have ever seen. She loves to be pet.

Did I Mention the Blasters!?

Possibly the most unique part of Hanes Corn Maze was the blasters! Oh yes, you read that correctly. There are air-powered blasters that shoot mini pumpkins or ears of corn across the field. Believe me when I tell you they shoot far! Very outside-the-box and a definite must-do when you visit.

The Tiny Bakery

Before you leave Hanes Corn Maze for the day, you absolutely must pick up something delicious from The Tiny Bakery. We bought a mini pumpkin pie, butter tarts, and a sampler pack of their best bars. Let me tell you – they did not last long! Homemade fresh every day, nothing beats it. On a weekend, the bakers can bake and sell 500 or more pies!

Hanes Corn Maze The Tiny Bakery

Tips for Visiting Hanes Corn Maze

  • Pre-book your visit online here
  • Wear “farm footwear” – the ground could be wet or dusty, so leave the fancy footwear at home
  • Dress for the weather – we went on a sunny and breezy day, but once inside the maze it got warm without the breeze
  • The farm is stroller-friendly but the maze isn’t

Hanes Corn Maze is located at 1001 Highway #5 West in Dundas Ontario

Admission Prices For Hanes Corn Maze and Farmland

Purchase admission to the Farmland and Corn or Sunflower Maze separately to build your ideal day at the farm. Kids under 3 are free to enjoy the farmland, and everyone over 3 years old is $10 each. Looking to do the Maze? Admission to the farm is included in Maze pricing and ranges from $14 to $21 for visitors over 3 years old. Click here to pre-book your time – it’s recommended.

Our readers often ask “Where can I go horseback riding near me?” so we knew this curated list would help a few families out.

Wild Waterworks is conveniently located at Confederation Park in Hamilton. Whether you’re driving or using public transportation, reaching the park is a breeze. The park offers ample parking spaces for those who choose to drive. For public transport users, there are several bus routes that connect to Confederation Park, making it easily accessible for visitors from all over the city.

Address to punch into your GPS: 680 Waterfront Trail, Hamilton, ON L8E 3L8

Attractions

Water Slides: Get ready for an adrenaline rush as you plunge down the exhilarating water slides at Wild Waterworks. From twisting turns to heart-pounding drops, these slides will leave you screaming with delight. Highlights include the “Kamikaze,” a vertical drop slide, and the “Sidewinder,” which sends you spinning in a bowl-like structure.

Wave Pool: Cool off in the massive wave pool, where you can experience the excitement of the ocean without leaving the city. Relax on a tube or ride the waves as they crash against you. The wave pool offers an excellent opportunity for swimmers of all ages to enjoy the water.

Lazy River: Take a break from the thrills and hop on a tube for a leisurely float down the lazy river. Meandering through the park, this tranquil attraction allows you to soak in the beautiful surroundings while enjoying a gentle current that carries you along.

Spray and Splash Pad: Designed especially for younger visitors, the spray and splash pad is a safe and interactive area for kids to cool off and have fun. With water jets, fountains, and play structures, children can splash around and let their imaginations run wild.

Amenities and Services

Cabana Rentals: For those seeking a VIP experience, Wild Waterworks offers cabana rentals. These private, shaded areas provide a perfect oasis to relax, unwind, and enjoy the park. Each cabana comes with comfortable seating, a mini-fridge, and dedicated food and beverage service. We’ve never booked one, but I spoke to some parents with younger kids, and a cabana offered them a beacon of sorts for kids to return to in between the fun.

Food and Refreshments: When hunger strikes, you’ll find various food stands and concessions offering a range of tasty treats. From classic burgers and fries to ice cream and slushies, there’s something to satisfy every craving. Don’t forget to stay hydrated by grabbing a refreshing drink from one of the many beverage stations.

Safety and Lifeguards: Wild Waterworks employs trained lifeguards who are always vigilant and ready to respond in case of an emergency. Additionally, the park provides life jackets free of charge for those who want an extra layer of safety while enjoying the water attractions.

Tips for a Great Visit To Wild Waterworks

Plan Ahead: To make the most of your visit, check the park’s website for operating hours and any special events. Arriving early in the day can help you beat the crowds and secure a prime spot near your favourite attractions. Arriving after 4 means you get to take advantage of their sundown pricing, which we detail below.

Bring Essentials: Sunscreen, towels, and comfortable footwear are essential items to pack for your trip. Don’t forget to bring extra clothing for after your water adventures, as well as any personal items you may need throughout the day. The park offers free life jackets in a variety of sizes, on a first-come first-serve basis.

Stay Hydrated: Spending a day in the sun can be dehydrating, so make sure to drink plenty of water. You can also bring refillable water bottles to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.

Follow Park Rules: Always adhere to the park’s rules and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Listen to the instructions of lifeguards and staff members, and be mindful of height and age restrictions for certain attractions.

Rent a Tube: We’ve been to Wild Waterworks in Hamilton a handful of times, and I highly recommend paying for a rental tube. A rental tube means you can enter the lazy river at any of the various entrance points, instead of having to line up and wait at the one entrance with tubes. It saves you time and means you get more time on the river and less in lines.

SAVE MONEY! If you have your wristbands from last year, you can save $10 on individual passes, or $35 on the Four-Pack. They must be purchased in person though.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wild Waterworks

Children ages 3-10 MUST be accompanied by a person 16 years of age or older.  All persons entering the park are required to pay an admission fee.

Have you been to Stratford, Ontario? I hadn’t been in years, so when a friend inspired me to visit again, I did. I took the kids on the road and we spent the day in this adorable small town. Here’s what we did.

Why Stratford?

Stratford wasn’t foreign to me. My uncle lived in Stratford for many years, so as a kid I visited often and knew it was somewhere I’d want to take my kids to visit. We also watched an episode of The Amazing Race Canada take place there and knew we had to add it to our day trip list! You can truly find inspiration anywhere!

Things To Do in Stratford Ontario

Stratford’s Small Town Charm

Stratford is one of the most picturesque downtowns I’ve seen in a very long time. The buildings are so well maintained you’d think you were on a movie set. I couldn’t help but take so many photos of the beautiful architecture. It’s so fantastic to see a city that has maintained its charm for so long.

The drive was about 90 minutes from Burlington, and quite easy, especially for the directionally challenged like me. The downtown core offered lots of parking, and because it’s compact, we parked and walked to all of the destinations we had on our must-see list.

Things to do in Stratford, Ontario

Our first stop was for lunch. We knew we wanted to eat local (no chain restaurants when we are day-tripping!) so we started to wander and stumbled up The Alley Cat Cat Cafe. Seriously! A Cat Cafe! We are cat people so we had to check it out. Their menu was the essentials of home cooking and we all really enjoyed it. Try the fresh-squeezed lemonade!

Once we finished lunch, it was our time to visit the cats! Walk-ins are welcome if there is space, but if you want to ensure you get to spend time with furry friends it’s best to reserve your spot. There were 8 resident cats and 2 who were adoptable. The Alley Cat Cafe has had great success with fostering cats until they are adopted, and the entrance fee ($10.50 per person, per hour) goes to support the cats. We recently lost our family cat when he was 17 years old, so petting and playing with cats was a much-needed activity for us all.

Things To Do in Stratford Ontario

Float Along the Avon River

After we got our cat fix, we headed to the Avon River to rent a paddle boat and paddle around the water. For a 1-hour paddle boat rental, it was $28.50 and all three of us fit on one. They also rent canoes, kayaks and bicycles. Rental info here. As we floated along the Avon River we were treated to live music being performed on a floating and moving stage. You can also buy a small paper bag of food for the ducks, swans and geese to feed them while you’re floating. Be prepared for some “passionate” eaters though!

Things To Do in Stratford Ontario

Treat Yourself in Stratford, Ontario

The paddleboat ride helped us work up an appetite, so we wandered the area more and did some window shopping before we strolled past 2 beautiful chocolate shops! In the first, Rheo Thompson Candies, we picked up some delicious peanut brittle and mint chocolates for my mother-in-law’s birthday. And just a short wander away we stopped at Chocolate Barr’s Candies and had not only a wonderful shopping experience but some decadent treats, too! As we were paying for our goodies, we were the only ones in the store and the chocolatier took the time to explain to my kids the differences between ice cream, gelato, and sorbet. That is a question they’ve been asking me all summer!

Other great reasons to visit Stratford, Ontario

We planned for a short day in Stratford, but we are already scheduling our next visit. There is so much to do and see. When chatting with our readers and friends, they suggested we make time to eat at Raja Indian Cuisine. They have the more beautiful patio I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait to go back for dinner. You can also rent bicycles to roll through town and along the riverfront. Such a great idea for next time. Plus, once regular travel resumes, there are so many quaint bed and breakfasts to welcome you!

I hope you enjoyed reading about some things to do in Stratford Ontario this weekend – and I hope you visit soon! I’d love to hear where you visit and what you do.

Looking for another epic family adventure this summer? Let me introduce you to zip lining at Chicopee Tube Park!

Located about an hour from Burlington, in Cambridge, Chicopee Tube Park became Chicopee Zip Lining this summer and we greatly recommend a visit for all families who love an exciting adventure!

How Old Do You have to be to zip line at Chicopee Tube Park?

You need to be at least 4 years old and 42″ tall to zip line at Chicopee. We saw kids of all ages and even grandparents zip-lining while we were there. There is no maximum age for excitement!

When we were there, on a Thursday, there were also 4 or 5 other families, ranging in size from 3 to 5 family members also there. That may sound like a lot, but the way the entire process works, you are not near anyone at any time, unless you choose to be.

chicopee tube hill and zip lining course

How Does Zip Lining Work Exactly?

I can’t explain the safety or science of it, but the entire process was so smooth and I felt safe the entire time.

When you arrive for your pre-booked time, you check in at the window. The staff then meets you outside to get harnessed up and fitted for your helmet. From there, you waddle your way over to the people-mover conveyor belt that takes you about halfway up the hill, then you walk the rest of the way.

From there, you climb the stairs to the “launch platform”. You can have up to 4 zip liners go at one time. From there, a gate is opened and you walk out a couple of steps then you JUMP! Yup, you just lift your feet and the zip line does its job helping you fly through the sky.

The ride lasts 30 seconds, although you’d never know it was so quick! Then it’s time to be unhooked thanks to the team on the skyjacks. Check out our videos on Instagram!

What about little kids?

Don’t fret, there is excitement for them, too! Chicopee has a Mini Me zip line, too! We wouldn’t want little ones to miss out on the fun.

chicopee launch base

What is required to zip line at Chicopee?

For everyone’s safety and comfort, keep these requirements in mind when you book your visit to zip line at Chicopee Tube Park.

  • Closed-toe shoes are a must
  • Zipline reservations are suggested to ensure you get the time you want. Walk-ins are welcome as well, but no time guarantees
  • Last ticket bookings are 45 minutes before closing time.
  • Must weigh at least 50lbs. The maximum weight is 275lbs
  • Zip liners must be a minimum of 4 years of age.
  • Minimum 42 inches (3.5 ft). Maximum 78 inches (6.5 ft)
  • Full harness gear and helmets are provided.
  • Online Waivers are to be filled out by all Zip Line participants

how much does zip lining cost?

You can purchase single rides for $15 each ($12 on the mini zip line) or 3 ride packages for $35 for zip lining at Chicopee.

Thank you so much to the team at Chicopee Tube Park for inviting us to add a great family adventure to our summer memory bucket!

Back for 2024! Enjoy free outdoor movies near you this summer! Nothing tells you it’s summertime like the release of the movies in the park schedule!

You may be asking why I love an outdoor movie so much. I’ll tell you! I really think these are the ideal family activity for a summer evening. Very little preparation needs to go into the outing. We sometimes picked up McDonalds or a cheap pizza and ate it picnic-style on the grass before the movie started. Other times we get kid-approved charcuterie-style dinners. For some reason, kids will eat lots of anything when it’s served al fresco!

I don’t know about your kids, but mine loved going to the free outdoor movies in the park in their pajamas, and that made the transition to bed pretty easy. Another win!

My kids loved that this was an event filled with other kids. It was like their version of Coachella haha! Big performance, people everywhere and a very casual vibe. They’ll meet and make new friends and the fresh air will tire them out. Many of the free outdoor movies are help at big park spaces, so there’s usually a playground to enjoy and maybe even a splash pad! Maybe it’s better than Coachella?

What Should You Bring To Movies In The Park?

You don’t need much to make this casual outdoor activity with kids great. Here’s what we suggest bringing with you to the free outdoor movie night

  • Camping chair or picnic blanket to sit on
  • Drinks and snacks for everyone
  • Wear your fave jammies
  • Bring a small blanket just in case the temp drops once the sun goes down
  • Bug spray – just in case
  • Something to do before the movie starts – a frisbee, a ball, skipping rope, a scooter, an activity book, etc.

What Free Outdoor Movies Are Playing in 2024?

Here is the list of scheduled dates and locations for Movies Under The Stars in Burlington. Movies are shown on Thursdays and will start at 9 pm, and the locations rotate through different Burlington parks.

Grand River Rafting Adventure – Tips From Our Trip https://activeparents.ca/grand-river-rafting-is-perfect-for-families/ https://activeparents.ca/grand-river-rafting-is-perfect-for-families/#comments Thu, 23 May 2024 13:00:41 +0000 https://activeparents.ca/?p=37557 Floating along the Grand River was definitely our best summer adventure!

The post Grand River Rafting Adventure – Tips From Our Trip appeared first on Active Parents.

Our best summer adventure with the kids was definitely the day we spent with Grand River Rafting Company, floating along the Grand River. Kids of all ages – and adults of all ages – will love it. Here’s why.

More Adventures We Recommend

online booking for grand river rafting

Book your trip online, it is easy to do. I also loved that they have various cancellation policies due to weather, etc. so you can rest a little easier. You get a full refund if you cancel 48 hours before is reassuring. Booking a time slot allowed us to see how many other people had already booked during the time we were hoping to go.

Turns out they can host about 1000 visitors a day on the river! Crazy, because the Grand River is so wide and long that we rarely saw other groups.

Is It Safe For Kids To Raft The Grand River?

We had a group of eight: three adults and five children. We decided to go on a float down the Grand River. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d never done anything like this, nor had my kids, but I was the most novice of the crew. Let’s just say I rocked it. And I felt like a real rafter by the end of our float.

The kids in my group ranged in age from 10 to 15 years old. A friend of mine who also rafted this same route had their 8-year-old in his own raft and he was just fine.

kids rafting on the grand river
Pictured here are a 14-year-old, a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old. We saw kids as young as 7/8 in their own rafts. The river is very calm and we felt so safe.

Getting Ready For Our River Rafting Adventure

We chose to do the Paris to Brant 13 km tour through Grand River Rafting Company. You park at Brant Conservation Area and check in with the rafting company there. This is where you park, and it’s also your final stop on the river tour. After we were told some safety tips and other instructions, we boarded a school bus to drive us to the top of the 13 km trail in Paris.

Once we got to the launch point in Paris, we got our turbo tube paddles and picked up our inflatable rafts down at the water. This is also the place where you would ask for a tether. Use the tether to tie yourself to your friends so you always stay together, or use it to tie your kid’s rafts to yours so they don’t float away. Even if you don’t think you’ll need a tether, I highly suggest getting one just in case.

setting sail at river rafting
This was our starting point where everyone in our time slot got into the river. Once you go under this bridge, you spread out and we only saw another group every hour or so.

Grand River Rafting Was Our Best Adventure on Water Thus Far!

Once I flopped ever-so-gracefully into my Turbo Tube, we were on our way! We set sail at about 12:30 p.m. and the Grand River is absolutely gorgeous at midday! The sun twinkles off the water and the views are spectacular. We departed with a group of 20 people on a bus. The Grand River is very wide, so we didn’t encounter anyone else unless we decided to.

We had kids with us aged 10 to 14. My 10-year-old was the youngest and the best at paddling. The good thing is because of the slow current, you don’t actually have to paddle until the last 1 km. You could gather your friends or family and coast through the riverway for hours without having to paddle a single stroke.

The Guide told us to look for the natural springs with fresh, drinkable water. The springs were small, but we found them. You need to pull your boat over to the shore and have an empty water bottle ready for filling. What a wonderful way to be connected to mother nature.

There is also a picnic stop at about 11km in. There were tables, trash cans and a port-a-potty. We stopped at the shore to eat some snacks. You could also tether yourselves together and snack right on the water.

You can’t beat this view!

Already Booking Our Next Visit

We had an amazing river rafting adventure with my kids. We would like to go on another one before school starts again. Grand River Rafting Company offers an amazing experience for only $39.99 plus HST. You can spend over 5 hours with friends in beautiful nature. Have fun and make memories with Grand River Rafting Company.

Rafting Tips from a non-expert

  • Sunscreen. There is absolutely zero shade on the river and the sun reflecting off the water will get ya!
  • Prepare to get soaked. You’re sitting in water the whole time, but it’s not nearly as uncomfortable as it sounds.
  • Bring or wear water shoes in case you need to get out and rescue your kids when they get stuck in shallow areas. Crocs, old runners, and water shoes all work.
  • Food/water in waterproof containers/baggies. Our kids loved sharing snacks back and forth.
  • Zipper bag for your cell phone and car keys, because they definitely will get very wet.
  • Full change of clothes for afterwards so you’re comfortable driving home.
  • Tether your kids, or at minimum take the tether rope when offered. We were out for 5 hours, so kids can get tired and we all know what a tired kid is like.
  • We let our 5 kids float ahead but within sight, and we moms just floated and caught up on everything that had been happening. Kids loved the independence and they can’t really go anywhere. Plus, the water is only a couple of feet deep, so we felt safe. As always, you do you, and what makes you feel comfortable.
  • We used Grand River Rafting to book our excursion. They’ve been around since 2006 and handled the entire experience so professionally. The equipment, lifejackets, and tour guides were amazing. No affiliation, just my recommendation.

All Aboard! Let’s Visit Halton County Radial Railway

Once you enter the Halton County Radial Railway museum grounds you will see which streetcars are operating that day. The rides are every 20-30 minutes and when we were there 3 different cars were in use.

Each car went out one at a time throughout the day. We got on the 11 am ride and rode all 3 cars in a row, which took us about 1.5 hours.

It was incredible to be inside the different cars and feel how different each ride is.  Shockingly, the older the car the smoother the ride! Throughout the rides, your conductor shares about the history and significance of the vehicles, the electric railway and the museum itself.

Ride the trains as much as your heart desires. Ask the conductors to punch your ticket for you.

Meadowvale Station

You are welcome to stay on the streetcar for the entire loop but if you want to get off there is a stop at Meadowvale station. This is a fabulous spot to have a picnic or explore the rock garden. Once you get off, another train will be by again in approximately 30 minutes. Just enough time to treat yourselves to an ice cream cone in the summertime.

Rockwood Station

The main museum is Rockwood Station and it’s located right at the entrance to the grounds. This is an excellent spot to explore the old station and learn about the history of the Radial Railway in Ontario.  If you’re curious to learn more you are welcome to speak to the docent who is very knowledgeable about the history of the station and the trains that passed through the city.

Be Sure To Visit Car Barn #3

Car Barn #3 is where all of the restored vehicles are and it’s definitely worth a visit. There are lots of things that you can touch and explore and many of them are open so you can enter them and take a look. Take time to learn more about each vehicle when you read the information posts throughout with lots of educational facts.

Be sure to let your kids drive the bus and explore the subway maze. Shhh…it’s not really a maze just a bunch of connected subway cars but we really enjoyed it!

If you have a train enthusiast in the family or are just looking for a unique experience, I would definitely recommend a visit to the Halton County Radial Railway Museum. The entire museum is run by volunteers and they do an outstanding job. Everyone we talked to was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and had an infectious passion for trains and streetcars.

Halton County Radial Railway Museum is located at 13629 Guelph Line in Milton, Ontario.

Get outside and get active with friends while playing at one of these area disc golf courses.

What Is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is a sport that involves throwing a flying disc or Frisbee into a basket or target, similar to traditional golf where players hit a ball into a hole. The objective is to complete a course with the fewest number of throws possible. The course is typically laid out over a large outdoor area, often in a park or wooded area, and can consist of 9 or 18 holes, each with a designated starting point and target.

Players must navigate various obstacles, such as trees or other natural terrain, in order to successfully complete each hole. Disc golf is a popular recreational activity and there are many courses near us. It’s family-friendly, gets you in the fresh air and makes for a great date night idea.
